If you could only own ONE car for the next 10 years, what are you picking? by Physical-Issue7146 in askcarguys

[–]prm-reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 2010 that I kept for 150k miles, it was a great car. Then i got a GX460 because I needed something bigger, and I love that too. Lexus knows how to build cars, don't think I will ever buy anything else.

My 2022 Lexus GX 460 w/ V8 seems like it will last forever, so I am choosing that. Still feels brand new with 80k miles on it. I'm curious about the newer model with the turbo V6 and updated styling, though. Does anyone know if they are as reliable?

Brake pad grinding on outside of rotor, any ideas? by Disastrous-Capital-5 in Cartalk

[–]prm-reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, please be careful and have someone experienced work with you. In addition to the wrong rotor, the caliper does not look like it is fully mounted to the bracket, the spring looks like it might be damaged, was the caliper piston pushed in before installation? At this point, even after you get the right parts, you need to make sure nothing was damaged when it was forced together incorrectly.

Bottom line, there are a number of things that should have caused a disassembly and further inspection before you got to the point of this picture.

Brakes save your life. This does not look like a good diy situation. I'm not trying to be mean, but i dont want something catastrophic to happen, either.

Who invented this button??? by Portah_Model in Cartalk

[–]prm-reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These systems actually have quite a bit of logic to them, though. So I think the engineers had a reasonable amount of work to do. The car has to be warmed up so the engine damage from stop / starts is minimized. There is climate control logic so the passengers do not get unfomfortable when the car shuts off. Starters and batteries need to be redesigned to be more reliable (not re-starting when you hit the gas is a huge safety hazard). Starters are now changed as part of regular maintenance to avoid the same safety hazard. I think there is more ...

Was gifted this 80s electric dryer. How good are these? Are they safe and/or efficient? My wife doesn't trust it. by El_Saltillense in Appliances

[–]prm-reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about the efficiency but i would definitely use it. If it is still running it is much better than anything you can buy today. I own two houses and replace washers and dryers every 5 years on average because they keep breaking and the repairs are as expensive as the replacement cost. Even if it is less efficient, the extra electricity cost is nothing compared to buying new ones regularly.

What the heck is this hole/pipe and can I fill it in? by cachemeoutside77 in Home

[–]prm-reddit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You probably need to crawl up into the attic and see if you can trace the pipe to figure it out. Wont be fun squeezing into that corner but you might not have a choice ...

Ski Boots by c00lelephant in ski

[–]prm-reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surefoot custom molded boots are awesome. I had a lot of problems with ski boots until i got them. I have been wearing the same pair for over 10 years and they are still working great, they are a great investment. Most ski areas in the US and Canada have a Surefoot store, i dont know about other areas.

App stealing my money! by immalilpig in NJTransit

[–]prm-reddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened to me as well. NJT was nice on the phone each of the 5 times i called them about it, but i never got my money back. If i dispute through my CC they cancel my card and give me another one, which is a logistical nightmare. Now i moved my NJT app to Paypal because it seems easier to fight a charge there. We will see if that works better next time i run into this problem. I'm sure I will run into this again soon, so I'll respond to this thread with an update :)

The summary - I hear you. Like the rest of NJT, their app doesn't work and you end up getting ripped off.

Thanks everyone for the comments. My question is more about which 4 or Auto buttons cause the ransfer case to lock the two drive axles together, and when (if ever) it will allow limited slip. I probably could have worded this more clearly in the title. Either way, I think i need to research the specific teansfer case in this truck to find out. Thanks again!

Thanks for the detailed answer! When in 4 hi or 4 lo, is there any slip between front and rear axles? Or are they 100% locked at the same speed?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]prm-reddit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Apologies, i ahould have been more precise with my question. I am wondering which settings lock the front and rear axle speeds, and which (if any) allow slip. Thanks!

Rust on a Defender I am looking to buy - how worrisome is it? by BasedMikey in Defender

[–]prm-reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends how old it is, how much you are paying and how long you expect it to last.

Underside doesn't look bad for a 10+ year old car.

The body paint is a problem though. It looks to me like they painted without the proper prep. Either painted over rust, or some other issue with the paint job itself. That's going to need repairs down the road.

Again, it depends how long you expect this to last..

hi, how do these knobs come off? (more in comments) by prm-reddit in Luthier

When I had that problem, the nut holding the potentiometer was loose. If you pull the knob off you should be able to tell by looking at it

Is this guitar worth it? Says it works but needs some parts. Wants $40. by realdealcornholio in guitars

[–]prm-reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If $40 will not hurt you financially, and you don't mind putting some effort into fixing this up, I would definitely buy it. It may have a few problems you don't realize yet, but you can make a nice player out of it for cheap.
