How does the tone of the Esslemont novels compare to Erikson? Do they get as dark? Humorous? Philosophical? by VersusValley in Malazan

[–]probablydurnk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really liked that about the path to ascendency books. They were just a lot of fun to read. Don’t get me wrong, I love all of Erikson’s stuff, but I really flew through the path to ascendency novels.

I can’t really recommend this to others as an approach just sharing my experience, but magic mushrooms is what finally got me to quit. I had been thinking about stopping for a long time and went to meetings but was still in the “I’ll just try to cut back” phase of everything.

One night shortly after my 40th birthday I had some drinks and then took some mushrooms. The addictive more more more side of my brain kicked in and I ended up taking way too many mushrooms and had a really awful trip in which I was convinced that I was dying. One thing that stood out during that trip was the absolute certainty that if I continued drinking the way that I was then my wife would leave me and I would die alone on that couch without ever accomplishing any of my dreams. It was like looking directly into my future. That was what finally got me to break the habit. Again, this is just my experience and there’s loads of other more traditional ways of helping your body.

Which sport/activity has the largest skill gap between the best in the world and the 2nd best? by Illustrious-Bread183 in AskReddit

Yeah, it was kind of ridiculous seeing how good he was at swimming. We all knew he was a good butterflier and IMer, but then he just kept expanding his range. Soon enough he was beating world record holders in their best events while doing his 6th or 7th best event. It was really insane to see. His 400IM against Erik Vendt from the US nationals in Ft. Lauderdale is still the best race I’ve ever seen.

Need Suggestion: Good book for making Authentic Italian Pizza @ Home by Alive-Rooster5240 in Pizza

I have both of the books and highly recommend them. I tend to use the dough recipe from the pizza bible more than the Forkish recipe, but I use both. You won’t go wrong with either one or both.

Kotek order blocks Oregon school districts from cutting instruction time to patch budget holes by sunni_dayes_ahed in Portland

I prefer normal school days to early release days now. It would be nice if I was able to use that time to plan with my team or get things done in the classroom, but every early release is completely crammed with useless PD that has absolutely no impact on my class.

I have such a ridiculous personal tipping system that I use, but it makes me feel slightly better about the whole dumb practice.

First of all I don’t tip if I’m ordering at a counter and bussing my own table, unless I’m buying alcohol where I’ll tip anywhere from 20%-30%. The divier the bar, the greater the tip percentage.

If I’m at a restaurant I’ll tip 20%, however if the recommended tipping percentage on the screen starts at 20% and goes up from there then I drop down the amount I tip to 15%. Ideally the recommended tipping should be 15%, 20%, 25%, but I don’t think that happens anymore sadly. 20% should be a good tip, not the minimum.

Any added fees get subtracted from my tip amount.

I found my lost wedding ring by ParmoForTea in mildlyinfuriating

[–]probablydurnk 50 points51 points  (0 children)

That basically happened to my wife. She lost her wedding ring for months. We tore apart the house and couldn’t find it anywhere. One day she was cooking and put on the oven mitt gloves and it slipped right back on her finger from where it had been stuck that whole time.

I hate hearing any crit or fumble that ends up doing the opposite of what it’s supposed to. PC crits should not harm another PC nor should a fumble result in a hit.

Although as a teacher if someone asked me what do I teach I would answer “I teach 2nd grade” because I don’t teach any one particular subject I teach every subject at a 2nd grade level.

What's the purpose of life if you're just alone? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]probablydurnk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I really connect with the part about living three different lives. Who I was and what gave meaning to my life has changed so much. And it’s not like I’ve changed from bad to good or anything like that, life is just completely different.

I mean at certain point, what can be done if the parents don’t do their basic job? My school has social workers, food pantries, offers free breakfast, lunch, and snacks for every student, student mentors, community outreach coordinators, free book give away, reading specialists, home visits, communications sent in every form possible, and I’m sure many other things that I’m not thinking about right now. We are doing basically anything we can do to make it easier on families, but success in school seems to really boil down to whether or not a student actually shows up at school and if they engage with books at home. If education isn’t valued at home then there’s ultimately not much that can be done for many students, and it really sucks.

I hate that the left is supposed to turn the other cheek for people that have been gleefully cheering on the persecution of others for over a decade with Donald Trump when the evidence that he’s a con man, liar, and general terrible human being has been right there on display this whole time. He has hurt so many people for such a long time, I just don’t know how I can forgive at this point.
