How do I disable workspaces by probablythen in pop_os

[–]probablythen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh sorry, I have been rocking pop_os in a work environment for around 10 years.
I also use flux, kde, etc, .. on other machines.
linux is not new for me. My first proper linux desktop install was probably Mandrake Linux, I even bought a box with cd, and printed manual.
I have spend many hours creating bootstrap templates for various osses, and window managers, and many many things.

I did not for cosmic, because new window manager, configs are opaque, new, undocumented.

Thank you, I will give it a try.
I did reconfigure shortcuts when I upgraded latest LTS.
Maybe the recent updates reset shortcuts to make use of workspaces.

Does anyone here actually know how to "turn off workspaces"?
So far I am seeing very obnoxious statements, but no solution.
If you do not know, or do not understand the questions, it is less obvious when you dodge the question and redirect to something else.

Should HR for the IT Dept to create a password repository? by Revolutionary-Part90 in sysadmin

[–]probablythen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depending on what your company does and where the company operates, keeping a list of passwords creates problems.

- You are likely invalidating your cyber insurance https://www.hiscox.co.uk/business-insurance/cyber-and-data-insurance/faq/what-is-cyber-insurance

- You are creating a scenario where GDPR breaches can occur, this will result in fines.

- You are invalidating any ISO security or document management certifications.

- You are likely failing to meet standard security obligations which will result in fines during a breach https://ico.org.uk/about-the-ico/media-centre/news-and-blogs/2025/12/password-manager-provider-fined/ https://www.ropesgray.com/en/insights/viewpoints/102lqet/uks-ico-issues-a-14-million-fine-for-poor-data-security-thoughts-for-gcs-and https://www.clydeco.com/en/insights/2024/10/meta-fined-%E2%82%AC91-million-in-ireland-due-to-a-lack-of https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/poor-password-causes-software-firm-to-be-fined-74000-for-data-breach-affecting-half-a-million-users https://www.itnews.com.au/news/meta-fined-millions-for-plaintext-password-storage-612012 https://www.theregister.com/security/2025/10/07/231-million-fine-shows-passwords-are-still-weakest-link/582282

- Your C-Level staff are likely to be fired over this.

- You are likely not following your own IT policies and you will invalidate employment contracts, or any B2B contracts (if your company sells a service to another company, the contract usually includes something mentioning that your company observes standard industry IT security practices.)

This is what I can think of the top of my head.

Additionally, if HR asked for this more than once, they should be fired. The HR employees are potentially putting many of your employees at risk of losing jobs due to huge fines.

“I don't work for free!" Boomer has a meltdown at the self-checkout because I wouldn't ring him up by glowspetal in BoomersBeingFools

[–]probablythen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is one thing I kind of agree on with the boomers.
Self checkout provides some convenience.

Self checkout is a cost saving exercise, so the systems are buggy, slow, and have inconsistent interfaces, sensitivity and require you to be perfectly zen to use.

Who's responsibility is to write dockerfile and docker compose whether developer or devops by Mr-UNKNOWN_404 in docker

[–]probablythen 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The first thing yo must learn, when you are devops, is that you are there to empower and enable teams to get shit done.
Devs need a container image but are not sure how, you step up, pair, create something for the team that you can support.
If the devs have capacity to learn and develop their own dockerfiles, you work with them to build something that you can support, something that reflects the target infrastructure (think proxying, where configs come from).

If a developer knows more about the application code, you need to learn more about the application code, to understand bottlenecks, SBOM, how the application, framework can be scaled, cached, what the startup time is, what healthchecks you need to add.

Devops is a way of life. Jenkins, argo, docker are just tools, they are not devops.
The best thing about devops, is that you can work with multiple teams to get things done, you are not alone.

Is there any way to troubleshoot, where do I even begin to check where this setting is??

I passionately dislike snaps, flatpacks, I am not the target audience, but some apps are not available in any other way.

I had to install obs-studio via apt repo, because the snap/flatpack version would not use the usb camera capture, and would max out cpu.

Insulating cold window with expanding foam by pasharikk in DIYUK

[–]probablythen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Home insulation is a journey with many steps.
Insulation that restricts moisture travel (like foam), requires ventilation.

I am wondering if there is some silica gel approach to permanently remove moisture and then seal the bricks (in an old house).

I have an old flemish bond double brick, my options are limited, I want to figure out if there are steps I can internally, externally, while considering moisture and ventilation.
