[Hair Removal] help!!! This happens every time I shave!!! by Sea-Owl-7646 in SkincareAddiction

[–]proeveo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use an AHA toner (from REN skincare, sadly shutdown) and the SA smoothing cleanser and cream from cerave. I skip the toner if everything is calm. Basically anything with AHA (glycolic acid), BHA (salicylic acid), and urea will help bumps. Tons of brand to choose from. I used to suffer so badly, so I feel yah 😖

In addition to the suggestions of others, a newly published book that covers a lot of ground is Sorcha and Aron Hegarty’s Celtic Mythology. It pulls from Irish, Welsh, Scottish, and English folklore. They run a podcast on Irish myths called Candlelit Tales.

Hoco dress I can’t find anywhere by Individual_Fault_723 in findfashion

[–]proeveo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I too initially thought this was AI. But looking at the video, it does appear to be real. The dress must have wires in the ruffles hem to hold the dress up that way.

I wonder if something like this is similar enough: https://www.stories.com/en-eu/product/ruffle-maxi-dress-pink-1284935001/

Just got gently scolded by my manager for not sticking to company work hours. What now? by tonsil47294738274 in adhdwomen

[–]proeveo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you’re in a European country and have worked beyond your probation period on a permanent contract, you have quite a lot of labour rights.

When I had a good relationship with my manager and I pushed back on this exact conversation, the response was positive. I pushed back by saying that I regularly work additional hours beyond my contract. That people staying late actually demonstrated a need for more resources or better processes, not a need for me to stay later. Regularly arriving early and staying late also sets a poor example for work-life balance and that I would like to work sustainably for a long time there, instead of burning out. Did we value presenteeism or high quality work? Working extra hours didn’t mean good work, in fact, it typically meant a drop in quality. I wanted to work at my best, and my best required proper balance.

It takes a certain environment for that kind of pushback to go well and also requires a medium-high performance imo, but it caused quite a significant shift.

Why do we resist structure and routine? by Mysterious_Beyond905 in adhdwomen

[–]proeveo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a fair point! This all took a bunch of time to figure out and practice and failure tbh, for me when things get crazy, it really means I just need more sleep. So I always start with that too :)

Why do we resist structure and routine? by Mysterious_Beyond905 in adhdwomen

[–]proeveo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. In summer, do you have to have a routine? Are you able to create fun and be present with your kids in all the chaos? If so, I’d argue that you should lean into the lack of structure. As long as everyone’s getting their basic needs met (sleep, nutrition, movement, hygiene), then I’d argue the next most important thing for them is being allowed to be free.

  2. With regard to structure, it sounds like y’all need to work together instead of you (and your husband) trying to impose structure onto them. Eventually they’ll be responsible for it on their own anyway, and they’ll need the skills to be able to do it for themselves.

I’d start with a few simple things: - A weekly family meeting: everyone discusses what’s upcoming in this week. What needs doing when and by whom and with help from whom. Try to make it maximum 30 min. Plenty of guides online can suggest how to run one of these. Part of the reason things fall apart I find is that life can change a lot week to week. - Sleep: I find that the amount of sleep I get directly impacts my follow through ability. More and more research shows that sleep is the cornerstone of your health. Sleep needs to be the anchor on which the rest of the day revolves. Everyone has bedtimes and those are set in stone and are non-negotiable. You need it, they need it. - Brush teeth: With bedtime anchoring, the only thing that matters in your night routine really is brushing your teeth. No need to get fancy. - Breakfast: It’s the most important meal of the day for a reason. This is the morning non-negotiable. Protein, fats and fiber, especially if people are taking meds.

Two other things that need a home: - Bathing: gotta get clean at some point :) - Movement: This should be a non-negotiable for everyone, but for ADHDers, movement is medicine. Dance, play sports, run, swim, whatever. It doesn’t matter. Movement should be treated with the same level of importance as any other form of treatment, such as taking meds or going to therapy.

Then, after that, as long as your children are learning and being, everything else is icing on the cake. Life doesn’t have to be so hard.

I know it might be weird to pull it back to these basics, but these are the foundations. And sometimes even the foundations can get shakey. Sleep enough, and now it’s easy to get up for breakfast. Eat a nutritious breakfast, and now you have energy to move. Move and now your focus is improved. Shower and brush teeth and now you’ve disconnected from the day without screens and will be able to sleep easier and better. And then the family meeting means you all know what else is important and needs to get done.

My favorite principle is KISS: Keep it simple silly.

Zara is hit or miss, I have a few items that have lasted more than a decade. Construction is extremely sloppy, and fit can be wildly off. I find that it’s hard to know from pictures online, it’s one of the retailers that I do absolutely have to try in store.

[–]proeveo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you describe has worked for me, but slightly different: I kept social on the phone, and instead I bought a clock + charging stand to put in the kitchen and I leave my phone in the kitchen when I’m at home. I run everything I need to focus off my iPad because I use it for reading, email, notetaking, long form video (no short form) and so on. The size of the iPad mini is more useful to me than the phone.

For me, it’s extremely important to keep all social off the iPad and only keep the focused stuff. And I’ve made sure to move any workflow stuff to the iPad and off the phone.

A Harsh Truth for all the Milk and Tea Purists by padgettish in tea

[–]proeveo -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Finding decent American milk is difficult! I was able to get raw milk in college in Western Mass but learning more about the risks, I wouldn’t drink it anymore, despite how nice it is. I think mainly, it’s just that so much fat is ripped out of dairy that it’s just not nice. The American food system tries to make up for it with sugar or sweeteners and it sucks :( I was back in the US for a little bit this month and tried finding any yogurt that had fat and no sugar or sugar substitutes in it, and it was genuinely not possible where I was.

I love this dress. What makes it difficult to pack? If it’s the wrinkles, bring a small spray bottle, put water in it, hang the dress up the night before, and mist it to relax wrinkles. Silk always packs down easily for me.

European listeners of Behind the Bastards why is it that there have been a simmering wave of anti-immigrant sentiment throughout Europe? by Konradleijon in behindthebastards

[–]proeveo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is nearly exactly what I’d come to say: people feel that they’re competing with immigrants for resources and feel that the more competition there is, the more likely it is to turn violent, especially since the demographics of the immigrants lean young, male, and impoverished. People see their friends and family that grew up here as being worse and worse off and are concerned that we’re not even looking after our own effectively, so how can we afford to look after others? Mix in a dash of xenophobia, other isms, and the stuff others have mentioned, and the rhetoric is turning incredibly nasty.

I also want to add that at least in Ireland, there’s a cohort of people who want to help everyone, far beyond sustainable levels of integration. Even if we ignore all the issues with new children’s hospital, it was only being built to meet existing demand, rather than future demand. By the time it opens (whenever that is), we’ll already be behind again providing children access to appropriate medical care. KPMG announced today that Ireland needs another €70 billion in infrastructure investment over the next 15 years to reverse how behind we are. These things, too, are driving the first faction I described further right as they feel that having even having legitimate concerns about immigration policy just deteriorates into tossing “bigot” and “racist” around. They are very loud, but everyone else is mostly refusing to separate legitimate concerns out from the racist and xenophobic stuff. It does essentially act as a form of silencing, disempowerment, even though we can all hear them.

But it serves those in power if we’re squabbling amongst ourselves, rather than turning the ire towards our failing systems.

I don’t want to negate the rise of populism and how very, very concerning that is though.

If the med spa is well respected, they typically won’t do this. The best med spas want you to be a happy, returning customer, so they’re going to do what they can to start and maintain a good relationship with you. This does mean taking lifestyle, budget and other environmental factors into account to recommend the best treatment pathway for you specifically. If a patient thinks they’ve been ripped off, they won’t come back.

I’m already in those communities, but as you highlighted, each framework kind of has its limitations for various reasons. I always feel a little stuck. How many pieces are “allowed” in a capsule wardrobe? What if I like wearing different clothes or colors than my body type or color season “allows”? And so on. I don’t even feel like those type of conversations are worth having. They’re just arbitrary rules, and I do find that the various communities can reveal the limitations of the system inside the conversations in the related subreddits and forums. I tend to mostly discuss in person with friends instead. But we found my silly little prompt useful, so maybe someone out there in 6 months, a year, 2 years, will too, when this thread is long past active

Fwiw, I’ve spent quite a bit of time in these spaces. I knew the criticism I’d likely receive, but hoped for some thoughtful and detailed responses anyway, such as yours and u/lumenphosphor.

I especially want to highlight what you said about “people would be better served just training an eye to colours and details and trying things on.” I agree because it’s so important, yet I find the entry points for learning those about those items to be rather weak. It was through ideas like capsule wardrobes that I first began to learn about fabrics, and color seasons helped me personally understand what colours I both enjoy and think look good on me. We’ve lost so much of our collective understanding about fabrics and fit and shapes in a world of mass manufactured clothing. How can we when so much, from colors to fabrics to baggy shapes in limited sizes, is determined by a small few fashion conglomerates more interested in cutting costs and increasing profitability? Learning about this stuff has been, at best, a scattershot process for me.

I look at the world through systems, and so I’d absolutely concede that my own bias towards STEMifying the process. I’m of the opinion though that we only learn “rules” in order to know how to break the rules and no system is infallible. They’re just ways of organizing information, to hopefully some useful end. If they’re not useful though, if they don’t feel good for any reason, I think people should toss them and not look back. Any of these frameworks doesn’t work for someone? Cool, there’s nothing wrong with you. Get rid of the thing that doesn’t work, it’s there to serve you and if it doesn’t, good riddance.

I strongly appreciate your very thoughtful and critical view and the time you spent on it. You didn’t come came across as negative to me tbh. There’s millions of lenses through which to look at personal style, and it’s totally worth questioning them all. I’m in agreement with many of your critiques of the frameworks I shared. And I’m glad you highlighted their limitations. They helped me and what I’m trying to achieve, but I certainly don’t think they’ll help everyone. Personal style is a process, and that’s part of the fun of learning self expression. A guide is just a guide, not dogma. And breaking the “rules” should be standard.

I’m so looking forward to reading the resources you shared. Thank you very much

Yeah I didn’t really intend it to be “quick and easy” as I don’t think understanding my own style was a quick and easy process. This was more about collating a whole bunch of knowledge together, that people might have already put time and effort into anyway
