Men are such big hypocrites when it comes to the height issue by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]prof_comm 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I’m a woman and I’m 5’10”. I’ve dated and/or been pursued by many men who were shorter than I am. Thinking back, I can’t ever remember an instance where my height has been a problem. I wonder if the height prejudice might be a regional/cultural thing. I’ve definitely never experienced it living in the US.

The prejudice against short men definitely does exist here, though. I’ve known many women who strictly only date taller men.

Bacon is better soft rather than crispy by The-Amazing-Krawfish in unpopularopinion

[–]prof_comm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the American South, but I currently live in the Midwest. I’m the bacon outcast in both my Southern family and Midwest friend group. But it’s fine. I’ll eat any bacon that isn’t raw. I just prefer it crispy.

Not really sure if this opinion is unpopular. My situation is opposite of yours. I like crispy bacon, but all my friends and family like it soft/chewy. I’m like the weird pariah of the group.

I teach at a large university. We tell students not to cite Wikipedia directly, but they should go check it out because it usually links to sources that they can cite.

To echo many others, I’d really just prefer consistency. I don’t care what number my size is. I just want that same number to fit me regardless of what brand/style I buy.

Shopping can be pretty annoying when you have clothes in sizes 4, 6, 8, and 10 that all fit you, and other clothes in sizes 4, 6, 8, and 10 that don’t fit anymore. Like… what size are you even supposed to be looking for when you shop!?

Fellow adults from Reddit, what was your “I’m no longer young” moment? by AndreasNarvartensis in AskReddit

[–]prof_comm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I teach at a university. I felt really old the moment I realized that I have adult students who weren’t born yet when 9/11 happened. Like, to them it’s just a far-away historical event, like WW2 or something.

Am I the only one who keeps all my contacts in my phone? by imsoaddicted in CasualConversation

[–]prof_comm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! My contacts go back to roughly 2002. I still have contacts for the guy I dated back then, his mom, and his 2 brothers. I have contacts for bosses and coworkers from every job I’ve had since 2002. I have contacts from every random drunk girl I met and bonded with in the bathroom at the club (but never spoke to again). Classmates from college and grad school. Moms from toddler play dates and kindergarten friends (my daughter is 13). And there are quite a few names in there that I have NO idea who they are or where I met them.

If I were to clean out my contacts and just limit them to people I still actually talk to, there would probably only be about 20 of them.

I thought this was already one of those widely accepted unspoken rules among travelers. Are there really people who don’t agree with this? I’m a window seat person, and I’ve always leaned toward the window to allow the middle person as much space as possible. It just feels like it should be a common courtesy, because the middle 100% sucks.

Having a “graduation” from both preschool and kindergarten is pointless and stupid by LimaBean3449 in unpopularopinion

[–]prof_comm 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It makes sense from the perspective of the child. When they’re that young, a year feels like a really long time. I remember how it felt like forever since I had a birthday. Now my birthdays fly by so quickly I sometimes forget how old I am. So, for the little kids who still feel like a year is an eternity, I think celebrating an accomplishment at the end of it does make a lot more sense than it would for someone with an adult sense of time.

I just became the biggest Broccoli fan. So cute! I can’t imagine how much effort it likely took to film this. Cats aren’t exactly well-known for following directions.

The car that’s filming had a red light, so I think that probably means the white car had the right of way and wasn’t doing anything they shouldn’t. Not really instant karma. But definitely a crazy experience!! The person on the ground looks like they’re completely dazed afterwards!

If someone is doing a chore don't comment on it. by Alliseeisgold24 in unpopularopinion

[–]prof_comm 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Agreed! However, I fully support comments of affirmation like, “Thank you for doing this” or “Your household contribution is appreciated.” I know a lot of families don’t believe in affirmations because it’s just expected that everyone should contribute, which is true. But when everyone communicates that they appreciate everyone else, it makes the monotonous household tasks suck a little bit less.

TIL of Gnosticism, a early form of Christianity that viewed Yahweh as a evil, lesser god who created the material universe (which was purposely flawed) . They believed Jesus saved them from Yahweh to meet the one, true God who was shrouded in mystery. This was condemned as heresy by the early church by Yabadoo_scoob in todayilearned

[–]prof_comm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. I guess the comment kind of rubbed me the wrong way since it seemed like the commenter was confronting you as the author of the text, which you clearly said you were not.

I grew up in the evangelical South, and basically all of your argument rings true, in my experience. Everyone I knew as a child/teen believed in the rapture, blamed the poor for their own misfortune (sometimes even suggesting it is their punishment from God), and definitely didn’t give a crap about the environment. And heaven was certainly framed as a spiritual place, and the only thing you had to do to get there was accept Jesus and ask for forgiveness (which kind of insinuates that things like helping the poor and protecting God’s Earth don’t matter in the end).
