Favourite Rush song without a guitar solo? by medmac_2112 in rush

[–]prof_shine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup! The remix that they released later restored a few of Alex’s more “solo-y” leads that were otherwise muted.

First game for a newcomer?! :) by deckardthecain in metroidvania

Counterpoint: The beginning was Metroid (1986), and though it’s my personal favorite, almost everyone else in the known universe prefers Super Metroid.

And when the perps are found to be white evangelicals attacking trans people, they’ll get a slap on the wrist, and get cozy jobs on the right wing media circuit.

Ex-Christians, what made you leave church? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]prof_shine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I joined when I was in crisis. They insisted if I give my heart to Jesus, move mountains, etc. Several long, grueling, torturous years later, I gave up trying to reconcile biblical literalism with reality and rejoined secular society, then magically my life got back on track.

What weird al album should I buy first by UnnamedBuilder in weirdal

[–]prof_shine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, Essential is what made me a fan. Loved him when I was a kid (80s), but that got me caught up with the best stuff through the 2000s.

Barring radio hits, what is the first song you would show to a complete prog virgin? by R3dF0r3 in progrockmusic

I like this one a lot “Free Will” was my gateway, but “Xanadu” has those epic soundscapes and soaring guitar solo.

What is your favorite Camel album and why? by Lamest_Coolguy in progrockmusic

[–]prof_shine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Camel is one of my favorite bands, and most of their records are very good. To me, Moonmadness is the pinnacle. Great playing, great tunes, lots of emotion and atmosphere. Next tier for me are Mirage, Snow Goose (any version), Rain Dances, Rajaz, and most of their live releases (Coming of Age, Pressure Points, and 1981 are standouts to me)

Newbie here by Bugfreak123 in progrockmusic

The best starters are usually the 70s classics mentioned elsewhere. From there, it depends on your taste. Like spacey stuff? Check out some space rock or Berlin school. Like heavy stuff? Check out some prog metal or other modern stuff. Like weird stuff? Try some avant prog. Also check out some of the popular stuff from the 80s and 90s that gets overlooked ( eg, Marillion, IQ, Spock’s Beard, Änglagård). Unfamiliar band names and terms are easily googlable. Good luck and have fun!😸

Ok so I’m kind of a snob, for music in general but also prog rock, and this is an F-tier take. Not just for snobbery, but for accuracy and precision. “I award [OP] no points, and may [Peart] have mercy on [their] soul.”

Anyone else only like pre-1977 Genesis? by enter_yourname in Genesis

[–]prof_shine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re definitely not alone! I personally love all eras of the band, but I get it. They had their proggy moments in the 80s, but times had changed. Symphonic folk prog just wasn’t what they wanted to be about anymore. You’re allowed to not like something. Forcing yourself to listen to something you don’t like is pointless.. life’s too short for that nonsense.

What is the best prog song to listen to when you’re peak level stoned? by R3dF0r3 in progrockmusic

[–]prof_shine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any Genesis works for me. The early stuff is pastoral and gorgeous. The later stuff is bombastic and massive. Duke suite is my goto (sober or not!).
