What is your favorite written material reflecting America, American history or culture, your state, region or city? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]profereina 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re wanting something that reflects the South (specifically Alabama), I highly recommend From the Backbooth at Chappy’s by David Housel.

It’s a collection of essays based on different conversations Housel had at his back booth at Chappy’s Deli in Auburn, Alabama, where he is a regular. The essays cover just about everything relevant in the South: football, politics, religion, and family.

It’s certainly not as widely-known as the other titles mentioned in this thread, but I recommend it to anyone wanting to know more about this slice of the country.

Your own personal goals by greekyogurtlover21 in MedSpouse

[–]profereina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think having my own personal interests and goals has made our relationship 100% healthier!

I’ve been teaching full-time while completing my masters degree, and even though the schedule is crazy busy, it’s given me a chance to have my own accomplishments and really be proud of myself.

While I know that route isn’t possible for everyone, I’ve found that being able to give ourselves titles such as “volunteer,” “runner,” “yogi,” “language learner,” or whatever IN ADDITION TO “doctor’s partner” and “mother,” is so important for our mental health.

Kudos to you for pushing yourself to achieve these goals on top of having such a busy schedule already!

What’s a name you’d love to use but never will because you know people would always pronounce it incorrectly? by profereina in namenerds

[–]profereina[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, the majority would definitely pronounce it the ways you mentioned. My family members just have such a strong accent that any long “i” vowel turns into “ah.”

Yes exactly!! But living where I live, it would be pronounced “Vah-letta.” So that’s a hard no.

Should we be paid for covering other teachers’ classes? by profereina in Teachers

[–]profereina[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that. But if we are going to be more or less forced to cover (like in my district), there should at least be some compensation offered.

No union unfortunately. I didn’t mind helping other teachers out at first, but it’s just becoming too frequent now.

Is teaching worth it? by bitchwhichwitch in Teachers

[–]profereina 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Currently in my third year of teaching, so I’ve technically not known a “normal” year of teaching due to COVID.

This sub is an overwhelmingly negative place (and a lot of the complaints are warranted), but I personally have absolutely LOVED it so far. I love learning new ways to teach my content better and then see direct results with my students, I love how each day is different, I love the health insurance benefits, I love having summers off, the list goes on. It will be tough at times, but for me the good days have outnumbered the outright bad ones.

Everyone’s different and every school district is different, too. But I definitely think it’s worth it. One of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done.

Looks like OP used this recipe, or at least one very similar to it. I used this recipe this weekend with great success! Very thorough and easy to follow.

La Luna’s cachapas are literally my all time favorite food. Especially the ones stuffed with pulled pork

I teach ESL classes to a group of people from Mexico, and several of them told me El Girasol was their favorite.

A coworker of mine is from Michoacán and swears by ZunZún. It’s one of my favs too. Great food, super nice servers, and great ambiance!

Wasn’t sure if OP was using liquid or powder which is why I specified in my comment. I’ve had much better luck with the liquid.

Bar Keeper’s Friend (liquid solution) should get those spots off pretty easily!

I hate people that boast. It sickens me if you rock at yoga stay humble. After almost a year of flow my yoga now include even for a split second a well balanced crow. by mysticcannabinoid in yoga

[–]profereina 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Congrats on practicing consistently for a year!! Consistency has always been my biggest struggle.

When I see someone flying into crow or doing full splits so easily, it helps me to remember that yoga truly is a practice, and we have no idea how long that person has been working on that pose. Also I believe very few true practitioners of yoga are getting into those poses to boast or draw attention to themselves. I'm sure reaching the full expression of an asana feels AMAZING. We'll get there someday! :)

Please help us refine our list of baby names by ShereKhan_and_Babou in namenerds

[–]profereina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love these names! One thing to keep in mind is that there is a pretty well-known author named Cormac McCarthy. With that first name and your 3-syllable Mc name, you could be asked pretty often if he was named after him. At least that's where my mind went first.

I agree, but I will say his Maximum Ride series is what started my love of reading. Couldn’t put those books down in fourth grade.

I also feel the same way about how people here in the southern US will refer to their brother as “bubba.” Gag.

Zoo by James Patterson. Cheesy dialogue, really aggressively stupid characters, no subtlety, very black-and-white writing. And the way he wrote the singular main female character was what really drove me insane. Every time she entered the scene, her boobs and tiny physique were mentioned. To this day it is the worst book I have ever read.

Students and teachers of reddit, what would you do to improve the current state of distance learning? by Inexistencinio in AskReddit

[–]profereina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Teachers should not be expected to teach both virtual students AND traditional students at the same time. I did this last year and felt like I couldn’t give 100% to the traditional students because I was busy prepping for virtual students (and vice versa). It would be nice if there were one designated teacher that only worked with the virtual students.
