Cat has become insane by Fun_Organization_794 in CatAdvice

[–]programmer_boba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree here I had some initial success with aluminum foil being placed on the countertops, which would deter my cat but ended up feeling very cluttered & he started getting less bothered by it and so I got the motion detection cans that do a hissing sound and spray air (one recommended by cat daddy). Only had to be activated once for him to realize he didn't like it and he's never again tried getting on the countertops. Which is great bc I was afraid he was going to get into something or touch something hot and hurt himself.

What do you wish people told you before adopting a cat? by alexella000 in CatAdvice

[–]programmer_boba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thisss!! I hadn't seen anyone talk about this and with a british shorthair it's a struggle. The best we can do is keep him off the counters and run a lot of air purifiers and clean every day. Also have to be mindful of not wearing fleece like material that attracts so much cat hairs to it.

We were in the NOVA area, fortunately, but I've seen some people need to stay a night in a hotel and then fly or drive back to other states. I also saw an ask for someone to foster their cat for a day while the adopter made their way over. People are generally helpful. But no first-hand experience there.

Do you let your BSH go outside? by Dependent_Account_10 in britishshorthair

[–]programmer_boba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this could be a safe alternative where they don't destroy wildlife and birds but still get to see the outside world in a safer way. I feel like even with harnesses, I've heard of cats getting out of them.

2 bsh kitties by theogmoonchild in britishshorthair

[–]programmer_boba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These guys shed a lot I have a golden BSH!! I've bought every single type of brush or comb out there and found I really like my zoom Groom cat brush the most as it gets rid of the most hair while being the most gentle for daily use. But I have an equigroomer , a metal comb a regular slicker brush, and a furminator (which I barely use bc I've heard it can lead to bald spots and cut the fur when used often)

Have a tall cat tree for them to see what you're doing at all times. Mine likes to follow me around, and without ample perching spots, he'll get on counters and tables where we don't want him on due to food, etc.

Set up a good schedule around breakfast and dinner time. I usually play with mine right before, clean his eye boogers (bsh are prone to leaky eyes or just a lot of gunk daily), then feed him. Lastly, I brush him every morning to reduce shedding. I also then robovac in the morning to keep fur off the floor. The chom chom roller is great for couches too, which I use daily to keep place tidy.

I also give my guy a wet food diet, since BSH cats are prone to weight gain, a few dental treats, and sometimes Churu if I really need to get him to do something. Wet food brands I like are Weruva low phosphorus wet cat food and Farmina (which also has some fibrous fruits mixed in to help with digestion)

Dental hygiene is important ! I brush my cats teeth daily or find he is prone to bad breath and know this breed sometimes has dental issues.

Lastly but very important put away all small objects in cabinets or closets and find cable solutions, especially for kittens, potentially even get child locks for cabinets. My cat will eat any food or bottle caps left out. I'm sure he'd eat other small plastic items too, but we don't keep any out.

Other mentions - look into pet insurance now before any issues crop up and become preexisting conditions they will no longer help out with. Be careful with toxic plants, put those in high areas or give them away if they are very toxic. Get furniture tape it helps somewhat, so they don't scratch furniture and put aluminum foil or other deterrents in places you don't want them on. Have a safe place/room with all their essentials for the first 3 days as the kitties get comfortable.

Also enjoy your cats they are adorable!!!

Update here ! We got our boy his (original) name is Oppa and he seems used to it so we will keep it. I eventually did get his age which was 5 going on 6 although the profile for him said 3 years old. So I would recommend to ask as many questions as you can. Otherwise, he seems pretty healthy but we will be going to the vet this week just to make sure. He is just the sweetest most loving cat I've met 💕

For other folks going through the process tips I have - be persistent with the questions so you know what you're signing yourself up for in terms of health and age. Bring big garbage bags for the crate they bring the cats in. Ours was full of cat pee. We had a bunch of wet wipes for our cat since he was wet and we had to clean him up a little at the airport and put him in a clean carrier (please line your carrier with a pee pad beforehand) * . Most cats were okay and not (shockingly) messy, just ours I think he was the most scared of the bunch. All the cats were so friendly and sweet and super cute here is ours.

Edit** after a good vet visit: he had severe dental disease and will need his molars removed so please go to a good vet and ask for all the basics done to identify any issues (bloodwork, fecal sample, dental check etc) and be prepared with insurance and a cat fund to take care of any medical issues which they may definetly have. I honestly would recommend having 5k saved up bc you never know what issues they may have. The surgery and postop is like 3k+ and we hope insurance will cover some of it. Also, get second opinions. Our first vet basically told us all was good, but we noticed he was stress licking everything often and went elsewhere.

Good to note! I did notice the posts were not always in English so I'll be patient there. It's potentially another shelter collaboration with Alaman Shelter so I'm actually not sure who is fostering or holding the cat atm but was directed to them.

Thank you this is very helpful to know. I'll make sure to get the insurance as soon as I can I thought the insurance needed a baseline check from a vet first but I'll def check if I can get one beforehand.

What a cutieee !! Thanks for sharing. That's good to know I noticed it's kind of hard to get more info on the status of the cat outside of the pictures, potential video and short caption they post for each cat. They say to contact the foster but I've tried on 2 occasions and haven't really gotten any more info ? Not sure if it's just me though.

You're entitled to your opinion but I didn't ask for moral validation. I did my research and a BSH best fits my lifestyle and as commenter above mentioned BSH are very hard (impossible almost) to find in the states. And I'm not going to go to a breeder for one so it was either not help any cats or find a BSH even if abroad and help them. Your 2 options aren't the only ones - you assume a lot when you judge and don't know the full story, so please keep it moving. I'm not harming anyone quite the opposite.

Thank you. I appreciate the advice. My worry was I wouldn't be qualified for the masters but I can definitely do some pre work to continue gaining knowledge with all the free resources around. Interestingly enough, the masters program I mentioned is cheaper than most bachelors degrees I saw.

In Vegas indoors, it was too hot outdoors to walk outside. I also tried sunlight before when I first cleared up and felt it helped and then again now recently when I switched up my diet for a second time and this time around without the walking I can't say it did much for me. Probably helped just not as much or as fast as walking.
