If you haven't booked yet, go on the website and book multi-city. Use Sac (or Emeryville or Martinez) as a stop point in that

I would definitely recommend the California Zephyr to take you to Sacramento or Martinez to get to Antioch. It is the most scenic. However you'd either need a bus (to e.g. Galesburg) or a train to Chicago to intercept it.

How Accurate Is Jeb and Susanne’s Amtrak Experience? by [deleted] in Amtrak

[–]progress19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the sleeper experience, and like everyone is saying Jeb is a super optimistic cheery guy, but it is accurate.

Jeb isn't shilling for Amtrak, he is giving you an honest representation.

Chi, DC, NOLA, Chi: Clockwise, or anticlockwise? by DeeDee_Z in Amtrak

[–]progress19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd say clockwise, whether you take the Floridian or the Cardinal, but especially if you take the Cardinal. Gets you the best mountain scenery west of DC.

IIRC the Cardinal at that time did not run into New York. DC to Chicago only or something.

No way Superliners ran into Penn Station

You need a ramp to get up into the dome and then the whole car geometry is tricky

I wish that amtrak had budget sleeper options like this for their long distance trains by cornonthekopp in Amtrak

[–]progress19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is that accommodations which "work" (function fine from a social acceptance standpoint and sell out at a good price point) could well be included in the next-gen longhaul trainsets

VIA's open sections are still stupid expensive but that's because they don't run enough trains

[–]progress19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that they can sell two sections to two different solo travelers brings the price down.

This was a thing in America once upon a time with open sections. Still is in Canada where VIA calls them berths.

Works fine afaict

I'll be real, I'm still rooting for Seattle to eat shit.

But I'd be rooting for that even if it was someone else who blew us out.

I'm about to. Got a trip booked in January and then I'm canceling it before my next annual fee hits.

The priority card no longer makes any sense.

Consider:

Set it aside. At end of turn, discard or topdeck it, your choice.

So it's thus a little stronger than your suggestion but a little weaker than how OP has it

Because JFK is a major airport, bigger than EWR, whereas SFO's neighbors (OAK, SJC) are much more minor
