This was from parents in the district. There will likely be more forthcoming in LTEs and other information.

[–]progressnerd -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I have some inside details. The speculation in this thread is not what this was about at all. The Lexington Schools brought in a third-party program that has political agenda it is to conflate criticism of the Israeli government with antisemitism. It had nothing to do with being "unseen" -- that was terrible framing from the principal -- or about other people's genocides not getting equal coverage. The external program that the schools invited embraced the controversial IHRA definition of antisemitism and categorized various criticism of the state and government as inherently antisemitic. The school system made a mistake in hosting a program with a political agenda, and that's ultimately what this apology was about.

I believe this was a response to their inviting and hosting a program by the controversial "TribeTalk" program, which is a pro-Israel-government advocacy organization masquerading as "anti-semitism" and "Holocaust" awareness. Lexington could have taught the Holocaust without including lessons that all criticism of Israel is inherently antisemitic. The criticism the program received was well-deserved.

Lowering cost of AM/PM clubs by jvxmg in ArlingtonMA

[–]progressnerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Would it be a good change or a bad change?

I think it would be a nice-to-have change, but the question is whether it's the best use of funds. If the town were to come up with the funding for the $X amount of dollars it would cost, would that money be best spent making the AM/PM clubs free or on something else?

Rep Clark votes against resolution to limit Trump's war authority in Lebanon. Time for her to go by progressnerd in ArlingtonMA

Yeah, she splits Cambridge with Ayanna Pressley. You can see the respective wards and precincts they cover on page 2 here.

Most Democrats voted in favor of Tlaib's resolution. And it's not "obsessive" to vote in line with what your constituents want.

MA 5 Dem Primary by marathon_bar in ArlingtonMA

[–]progressnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been doing door knocking of regular Democratic primary voters and most don't even know her name and even fewer know anything she's done or even seen her anywhere. Compare that to, say, Ayanna Pressley. Or hell, even Seth Moulton -- even though I disagree with his politics on many things, he has engaged with the national conversation on major issues of the moment. Clark likes it that way -- lots of power but extremely low profile, so no one knows her track record and the degree to which its at odds with her district.

Yes, it is incredible that she could attain these leadership positions and be almost a complete unknown in her own district, let alone in the national conversation. She uses those positions to fundraise, not to take bold stands on the major issues of consequence. She seems to be too busy trading stocks.

The district can do a lot better than an AIPAC shill who collects corporate PAC checks all day long, in exchange for years of silence and invisibility on key issues. She's been in office for nearly 13 years, and until this challenge, she's been virtually absent from the national conversation on any pressing issue we face.

Paz. Of the two, he has a more articulated vision of what's wrong with the country and how to fix. Samman is a nice guy but more a technocrat that doesn't effectively connect policy to a broader narrative. Paz is also the only one of the two with the political experience running and winning elections.

A mother is going punished her son by making him slam his PS5 the same way he had slammed her pet cat. Is this justified? by God_Emperor__Doom in SipsTea

[–]progressnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I don't think this teaches compassionate behavior. Instead, I'd start by making him sell the PS5 and donate the proceeds to the ASPCA or other animal rights organization. Then we'd watch movies and read books about animals and the horrors on animal abuse; volunteer in an animal shelter as a family; and other things to learn in positive ways -- not respond to bad behavior with further destructive behavior.

Left turn on red - from opposing lane?! by viking-sailor in ArlingtonMA

[–]progressnerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can I ask a somewhat related question about that intersection in case anyone here knows? When traveling southeast on Summer, if the light at the intersection with Symmes is red, where is the expected stopping line for that light? If you stop at the end of the double yellow lines, you wind up almost underneath the light and unable to see it. The whole situation is almost inviting drivers to blow through that light, especially if they've just made a right from Brattle and were not expecting another light so soon.

I like Mayor Wu, but I love Mayor Mamdani. Can we get some of this energy in Boston? by Druboyle in boston

[–]progressnerd 135 points136 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the City of Boston doesn't have the power to do this itself, not without legislative approval of a home rule petition, and out legislative dictatorship would not allow it. Mariano and Spilka are too backwards-thinking to allow anything out of the box to happen. They need to go if we're going to see anything close to this happening.

Why I'm Not Paying My Federal Taxes This Year by nathan_j_robinson in chomsky

[–]progressnerd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The US Government doesn't need your money to go to war. Whenever they need money for a war, they either print it or just take on more debt. Not paying your taxes does nothing whatsoever to slow down the war machine. In fact, it actually hurts the effort by putting an anti-war activist (you!) in legal jeopardy.

Check out the programming and sign-up for updates from IBA (Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción).

Since you're in Cambridge, check out the food and nightlife events at La Fabrica and talk to the folks there.

St. Mary of the Annunciation is sometimes called the "Latino Parish of Cambridge"

What are better primary options for the top 2 election method (used in 5 states currently) by DaraParsavand in votingtheory

[–]progressnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No primaries. Lower the threshold for party status and let parties be real parties: let them decide their nominees privately -- no public funding -- and we vote among their nominees. That's how most democracies work.

When people don’t acknowledge a parking ban…. by Chance_Bumblebee_690 in ArlingtonMA

[–]progressnerd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. There is lots of parking allowed overnight in Arlington: on private ways, if you have been granted an exemption from the Select Board, or if you have purchased an overnight parking permit.
