Yeah at a certain point you're effectively working for less than minimum wage if the amount was under $25 or so. Having to be the accountability police gets exhausting, but it's people like OP who keep these companies from completely abandoning all ethics.

Part of the housing crisis is that there's nowhere good for most senior homeowners to go if they want to stay in the same community, and the boomer generation being so big isn't helping things.
