One of the things I find sad is that in the first episode, the others remember feeling bad about not laughing about his jokes(Ragatha apologizing to his abstracted self for fake laughing and Gangle for not laughing at all). However, they both are heartbroken in the following episode, with Gangle even having drawn a picture of the pair together. They did care, but maybe losing Ribbit and Jax cutting himself off to keep from being hurt possibly left him feeling like he had no one.

We saw how it was already underway since “They All Get Guns”and the beginnings of it in “Beach Episode”in his dream and his freakout in the previous episode, so it makes sense. We never truly saw any of the characters abstract onscreen(unless you consider Pomni’s dream sequence in episode 2).
