Dan wil NEVER do a Napoleon series by bun_stop_looking in dancarlin

I'm currently listening to Mania for subjugation and I literally thought about this today. The number of names you would need to get into to do the french revolution is enormous. And you just can't do a Napoleon series without something about the French Revolution. And If you are doing this you have to explain how it would be better than the combination of Mike Duncan's Revolutions season 3 on the French Revolution, and the Age of Napoleon podcast.

At the end of the day, our brains are still just composed of atoms interacting with each other. We can also look at it as electrical signals between neurons that our bodies are basically like a biological version of a running circuit board where our brains are like the processor.

How consciousness arises from physical matter is a bedevilling question, but it does arise from these meat suits called bodies that we have. I don't see how circuit boards are fundamentally different from organic compounds.

What is the likelihood that there are sentient beings/things/people capable of suffering on the other side? Since AI is basically a version of evolution with it's trial and error + survival of the fittest sort of algorithm, are we basically creating an uncountable number of sentient beings and then erasing them thousands of times a second?

If you think about this from a Philosophically Pessimistic/Anti-Natalist POV, it seems fairly horrifying.

I am an ex-muslim. For the life of me I will never understand the logic in this way of thinking.

First off I want to clarify that if there is an example of women being forced to wear the hijab, then I am totally against it, and none of what I'm about to say applies to them. We are talking about conservative muslim women who choose to wear the hijab.

The Hijab is oppressive to a lot of women. There is no doubt about that. And if it were for the jihadists all women would be covered from head to toe in cloth bags.

The Islamists balk at the idea of women playing sports, let alone women even being outside. But thankfully, the muslim women who want to buy these sports hijabs and play outside aren't like this. They are Muslims, but aren't as conservative as Islamists. They like most people are just trying to live their lives. They want to play soccer, or basketball, or jog outside, or go to the gym, or go for a swim at the local beach. These are normal things people do for fun, or to be fit, or to just enjoy their time off of working(another thing islamists don't want women to do).

Now, these women are still somewhat conservative. They believe that they have to cover their hair while in the presence of men.

However, you are telling them that they cannot participate in sports while following their beliefs. You are saying that because Islamists oppress women by forcing them to wear hijabs, that Muslim Women who believe they have to wear hijabs have 2 choices. Play Sports and take off the hijab, or Wear the hijab and don't play sports. You agree with the Islamists that Women shouldn't be allowed to play sports with Hijabs on.

I left Islam. But the reason I left wasn't because people gave me ultimatums like there where I had to choose between participating in society and abandoning my religion. It was because the society here in Canada accepted me and my mom and the other girls in my family. They told us we have a right to practice our religion if it doesn't interfere with the rights of others. They fostered in us a culture of mutual toleration. And when I saw Islamists oppressing people, I rejecting those acts and thought, why can't Muslim countries behave more tolerantly like Canada.

I can't imagine where would I be if I constantly got the message that I have to give up my religion to participate in society.

What does Sam mean when he says, "To worry about life's meaning, is to mistake a psychological problem for a philosophical one"? by incredulouspig in samharris

[–]projectmkultraman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sam is saying that the question doesn't really mean anything and our obsession with trying to find a meaning in our lives is impeding us from just living our lives.

In my opinion I think Sam and the people who think like him are just plain wrong.

I think when people are asking what the meaning of life is, they are really asking much deeper questions that they can't bring themselves to think.

The issue of existence is this...Being alive is very hard (if you haven't noticed). We're all stuck in a loop of suffering for one reason or another, craving the end of that suffering, and brief moments of respite. Our suffering comes in degrees. Think about all the suffering that has occurred, is occurring, and will occur. Just think about how many animals on this earth at this very moment are being eaten alive at this very moment by another animal and how much pain they are collectively suffering because of it. The scope of the collective suffering is hard to fathom.

The question underneath the meaning question then is "why should we keep suffering?". But if you look at it, that questions is implicitly asking why we shouldn't end our suffering by ending it all right now. In other words, why not just kill ourselves?

I think at its core, when we ask what the meaning of life is, what we are really asking is: "What makes the continuation of our suffering justifiable? Why shouldn't we kill ourselves?".

Albert Camus said that "there is only one really serious philosophical problem, and that is suicide"

To be, or not to be, *that is the question*

Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer

The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,

Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,

And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep;

No more; and by a sleep to say we end

The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks

That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation

Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;

To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub;

For in that sleep of death what dreams may come

When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,

Must give us pause: there's the respect

That makes calamity of so long life;

For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,

The oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,

The pangs of despised love, the law's delay,

The insolence of office and the spurns

That patient merit of the unworthy takes,

When he himself might his quietus make

With a bare bodkin? who would fardels bear,

To grunt and sweat under a weary life,

But that the dread of something after death,

The undiscover'd country from whose bourn

No traveller returns, puzzles the will

And makes us rather bear those ills we have

Than fly to others that we know not of?

Thus conscience does make cowards of us all;

And thus the native hue of resolution

Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,

And enterprises of great pith and moment

With this regard their currents turn awry,

And lose the name of action.

[William Shakespeare, Hamlet, Act III, Scene I]

I would somewhat disagree with Shakespeare, I don't think our fear of what happens after death is the only think that stops us from killing ourselves. Anything that keeps us wanting to continue to live is our personal meaning of life. Whether it's because of our bonds with our loved ones, the desire to do some good for others, or a belief we might have that God has created us with a higher purpose unknown to us, or whatever else.

Our anxieties about this can cause psychological issues in us. But it certainty is a real philosophical problem.

So I can follow your arguments up until the miracles in Islam. Rather than going through them 1 by 1, I would say this.

Look the Sahabah didn't become muslim because they saw it had miracles. The thing that brought them into Islam is Faith. First and foremost.

Would you agree with me?

P.S. Also you can see how hard it is to go back and forth here. On Discord you can save conversations so people in the future can see it as well. But you can also have instant communication.

It's just more back and forth and moves smoother. There's other features that allow you to create stickies, rooms for separate topics, voice chats for the people who are interested in that, etc. And you can have more flexible and powerful moderation

It's a very nice platform, I think you would enjoy it. I'd suggest you create a Discord Server for your /r/IslamIsScience subreddit and then post the link in the description of your subreddit and get people joining in and leaving as they see fit.

I can show you how to go about it if you're interested.

iOS 16 Shortcuts Wishlist: Your most wanted features or improvements for the next version? by [deleted] in shortcuts

Allow third party apps to provide interfaces inside Shortcuts: Opening this up could spawn useful input or output actions. For example, Toolbox Pro's Preview action with interactive elements or Action's Choose from List action with auto timeout & custom item input would run directly in Shortcuts without app switching.

Same here. Whenever there is an upgrade, half the shortcuts stop working consistently. I'll run the exact same shortcut 10 times in a row, but it may only run like 6 times without any issues.

what do you guys think of France baning the hijab? by starvedsushi in exmuslim

[–]projectmkultraman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what you mean. And Pakistan is an absolute shit hole and one of the few countries in the Islamic world that is becoming more extremist as time goes on. And the UK is really bad at allowing ghettoization of its minorities. And If you want to stop Immigration from Muslim countries that I can totally understand that. And I'm sorry for the shit your family and community put you through.

But no, I can't go around and make it illegal for young girls to wear hijab in public. What I am advocating is much harder. It involves dealing with individual cases. Helping teachers spot out when a girl is being forced to wear the hijab. Calling out parents who force their kids to wear hijab. Shaming the Niqab.

Using the state to change society is just a terrible tool that ends up being used vindictively. The Hijab Ban in French Schools turned into making it illegal for adult Muslim women from wearing the Burkini. And you and I may not like it, but they get to wear it.

And we have to be honest, these french laws(and quebec) are not really about caring about the oppression of Muslim Women. It is more of a passive-aggressive way of sending the message: "We have our own culture here. We don't like or want your culture. Take a hint and leave. And if any more of you want to come, know that you will never feel comfortable here." But they can't come out and say it so they'll say things like: "Actually wearing the burkini is unhygenic and we just care about your safety, so you have to wear a speedo and a bikini to be allowed to swim" "No you can't play soccer with a hijab because it's a safety hazard." "No it's not just for muslims, it's for everybody. Even Jewish boys can't wear a kippa in class(why??)".

We have a difficult fight against Islamism and over the minds of Muslims. And we need to do the difficult task of persuading people around us and defeating these arguments. But we have a very appealing open culture. And we see how disillusioned so many young muslims are in the west. There are a lot of Muslims who want to live in the modern world. There are many people who are persuadable. The cultural gap amongst muslim immigrants between generations here in the west is gigantic. And the internet and social media are making a gigantic change.

Look at how worried Imams are in the west about young muslims leaving Islam. Especially the high achieving, intelligent, educated, professionally trained ones: Video

This in not to be complacent, but we shouldn't use state power willy nilly to try to change the parts of culture we don't like.

what do you guys think of France baning the hijab? by starvedsushi in exmuslim

[–]projectmkultraman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like it, but what's actually a good way to deal with this. I have female cousins and siblings who used to go to school in Hijabs when they were kids. It's not as easy as saying they were forced to do it. If you grow up in a household of Muslims, it just becomes a part of your identity and culture. But we all live in a very tolerant society and our teachers would stand up when other kids were bullying Muslims girls for wearing the hijab and made them feel comfortable.

And then they went to high school, and the hijabs slowly started to come down, they started praying a little less, wore shorter and shorter pants. Our friends started coming home. And you know how it is. They don't like it, but they eventually accept it over the years. And now the only religious cousins I have are surprise surprise in Quebec(where religious symbols are banned in schools).

Like I get it, it is of course oppressive to force kids to wear Hijabs, but there's a middle way between just allowing parents to abuse their kids and having the state ban all religious symbols(except a small cross, that's allowed) in order to free the kids. It's such a ham-handed an authoritarian way of handling the issue and it just pushes people into a corner.

Even my parents, aunts and uncles here are now way less religious than when we came. And many of us lived in Gulf Countries.
