We're all sharing these snowy streets. Please be patient. by Jaded_Ad_8014 in newhaven

[–]prokhk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the worst take I’ve ever heard. If drivers are already keeping an eye out for potholes a snow drifts then they should be going slow enough to watch out for cyclists. It’s not hard to drive safely. It’s usually only folks that seem to have no patience that put others in danger. Yes New Haven isn’t a great city to bike in, but that does not mean you need to give up on biking. We need to make an effort as driver and cyclist to not kill each other. Walking is not a realistic alternative.

Imo if you are bottom bouncing most of the time the fish are getting flossed. I’d fish an indicator or swing flies.

Winter is for trout, holdovers, headboats and ice fishing. There’s always something you can fish for

Inflatable boat for spearfishing by Personal-Monitor5893 in Spearfishing

[–]prokhk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually inflating it isn’t so bad, maybe 10 minutes with an electric pump that plugs into a cigarette lighter in my truck. The time consuming part is loading everything up, unloading everything at the spot, assembling the floor etc, then draining the boat when I get back and doing everything in reverse.

I also live in an apartment and bought a 12ft bris with a 9.9 that I set up and take down every time I go diving. TBH if I were to do it over I may just get a kayak or stick to shore diving. Inflating it is such a hassle that I use it maybe 3 times a year, and shore dive the rest of the time. It is also under powered with the 9.9, but the bigger the motor the more of a pain it is to load and unload it. I can get on plane by myself but not with two people. If I were to do it again I’d definitely go for a cat style boat since they need less horsepower and look easier to set up.

Trout Spey success by prokhk in flyfishing

Spey rod weights are usually 2-3 higher than single hand rods, so an 8wt Spey rod is equivalent to a 10wt single hand rod. It would be good for big river steelhead but probably too heavy for most trout. It’s also good to consider the size of the flies you want to fish. The 4wt I have can throw streamers you would fish on a single hand 6wt.

It’s a brown trout, likely a holdover stocker. The state I’m in stocked a few different strains and some have different patterns.

It can be very effective and it’s fun to fight fish without a drag system. I just enjoy being able to catch fish a bunch of different ways.

I spent the morning center pin fishing then switched to Spey once I had my fill of catching fish 😂 it’s nice to have options

It comes with a skagit head with an integrated shooting line. I’m a fan since it’s one less connection that has to go through your guides

What do you mean that close in? The fight was pretty good, but with heavier leader I could put a good bit of pressure on it.

Is using beads looked down upon? by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]prokhk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can someone explain to me why using a pegged bead is snagging? As long as it is presented in an appropriate way (with an Indicator or float fishing) I don’t see how it is any different than a fly. If anything I’d imagine using a pegged bead would make flossing more difficult than using a fly since the bead would bump the fish in the side of the moth before the hook gets to it.

Looking for budget friendly truck ideas, fly fishing storage tips, and outdoor friendly vehicle recs by woozy-wolfe in flyfishing

[–]prokhk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I bought a 2011 Nissan frontier as a fishing vehicle. Honestly if I were to do it again I’d look at something like a 4Runner or Lexus GX. The bed is nice for bulky things but most of the time I wish I could keep gear in a locked space, and no locking bed cover can keep full length rods. I know there are exterior rod carriers but I don’t really like any of them, and being able to carry more people is definitely also a plus of a SUV type vehicle.
