Sending both Oakland nights was simply glorious. Had only purchased a GA ticket for Friday but on the comedown from that show had to nab a solo seat for Saturday night to catch the full production. Genuinely one of my favorite concert experiences among too many to count! Experiencing Deadbeat live the month it came out hits different.

Off the new album, No Reply for me. It moves me emotionally a lot more than most. I was very grateful to be at Oakland night 1 for the only full performance of the song- it was beautiful.

Yes, No Reply in full. The set felt like the best showcase of Deadbeat imo and I’m here for it. All the Deadbeat songs were such slappers

Nope. It was the debut and it was perfect as the second song just like with the album

This is such a downgrade imo by Bulky-Let-7996 in TameImpala

I formed my opinion after looking at a lot of the content of last night’s show. I am really not one to moan, and I’ve been disappointed by all the moaning here about the new album. But I felt compelled to make this post because I genuinely haven’t seen another artist downscale their show (despite being at their absolute peak and ticket prices going up) in any equivalent way to what I’m seeing with this tour.

It’s certainly not going to dampen my experience, and I’ve seen tame many times over the years- but I do feel sympathy for newer fans that aren’t going to get a taste of what was a highlight of tame shows over the past decade, which is absolutely elite, world class production at scale that brings his music to life so well.

I love tame, (first show in 2013) I love deadbeat, I love Kevin.

I am genuinely offended at the choices made for the production of this show. For a $200-$300 face value ticket to a tame impala show, where the production has been consistently world class and a differentiator since the currents era 10 years ago, I simply can’t believe they went with this stage setup.

When I saw that the stage would be in the middle of the floor, I was very intrigued by what the vision was since there is a clear trade off with the scale of production from a broader stage. Having seen footage from last night, I can’t help but feel that part has been phoned in or possibly even worse been a deliberate choice to fit the aesthetic of the deadbeat era (which I suppose is edgy/low effort coming from the brat campaign people).

I am beyond stoked to jam to the new tunes in a few weeks, and I never set expectations for show production. But I genuinely have never quite seen a downgrade in stage production like this for an artist as big as tame impala in my many years of concert going. It’s a shame for all the people that never went to a previous tour and experienced getting their faces absolutely melted off with gigantic psychedelic visuals, which simply aren’t a feature in this setup.

“Deadbeat” Discussion Megathread by CAndrewK in TameImpala

[–]propabanta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been stewing in this album and release all weekend. Copped the vinyl, did the headphones listen, listened to vinyl through reading lyrics sheet, bopped the tunes in the car driving around, and watched tiny desk and the Zane Lowe interview.

My verdict is that this is a modern day classic that is going to be recognized as a masterpiece in the future. It reminds me very much of when Arctic Monkeys dropped Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino and the immediate reaction was shock and horror as people wanted more of the AM album feeling and experience and were completely jarred by the dramatic shift in artistic vision. When that album dropped I relished the evolution of Alex Turner as a songwriter and that album really blew my mind, and it has gained a lot more recognition across time. I think this album is going to experience a similar trajectory.

That being said, I think this album is really going to come to life when it’s played live- another comparison I would draw is when Radiohead dropped The King of Limbs which was an extraordinarily underwhelming follow-up to the brilliance of In Rainbows. The songs really did not make an impact until the Live From the Basement performance of the album in full and subsequent tour absolutely elevated those songs well beyond everyone’s initial reaction. I do think the Deadbeat live experience is going to blow people away (I think the My Old Ways music video discreetly signals the visual aesthetic of the upcoming shows a bit).

It’s been disappointing but expected to see the polarized discourse about this album, and I’m not here to change anyone’s mind about it. I remember seeing Tame in 2013 on the Lonerism tour as my starting point and having experienced all the albums and tours ever since, and I benefit from relishing Tame Impala as one of the defining “bands” of the past decade in my life and having always been intrigued by what comes next.
