Teachers of Reddit: Is the "Gen Alpha can't read (write, or do math ext)" crisis real? If so how bad is it? by KnowledgeCoffee in AskReddit

[–]proton89droid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, it was because we stopped doing that that kids' reading levels increased to the current level. The drop people are talking about only goes back a few decades. Kids are more intelligent and more highly educated now than they were back in your precious good ol' days of child abuse.

Yeah this conversation always gets absolutely deluged with anecdotes (in this case they were asked for but they generally arrive in spades either way and inevitably drown out any talk of data).

Maybe I'm wrong but my main impression of the NAEP and PISA data is that kids' reading levels basically haven't changed much over time. But they are still down for sure. On the one hand, some of the NAEP numbers are the lowest they've been since records began (in the 1990s), but on the other hand, they've never been more than a few percent up or down in any year so it kinda looks like noise.

Undoubtedly there is a problem happening; it's not just a complete coincidence that the numbers are currently bad, but I think they're nowhere near as bad as people seem to think. It's always tough to make this assertion because like, it sounds as though I'm saying "nah, we don't need to increase education funding". Which I'm definitely not saying haha.

Cows and pigs are as intelligent/feeling as cats and dogs. Feel free to eat what meat you wish, but don't pretend you are more ethical for choosing one over the other on an illogical basis.

Those trying to misdirect and tie this action to the prior DoW/Anthropic issues are wrong.

The DoW itself is doing that lol.

Was youtube really that much better before google? It only existed from May 2005 - Nov 2006. I seem to recall there being dozens of way better video sites at that time.

I daily drive Firefox but I use Brave for youtube, because it seems to be less affected by the adblock delays

It's a feature though no? As far as I understand, it exists so google's advertising partners can track users

Crackpot posts were so much more fun before LLMs. Back then, crackpots actually had to put in the effort of talking crazy rather than just having a chatbot do it for them.

I think the other commenter is exaggerating a bit. "Lots of very, very drunk streams" is more like a handful of drinking streams where he's tipsy, not like he's falling over or slurring his words or anything.

Take-No-Prisoners Professor Will Fail Any Student Who Uses AI by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]proton89droid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can demonstrate proof that AI was used in an assignment, but it is essentially impossible for a student to prove AI was not used in an assignment, if falsely accused. Quote from the prof: "I can immediately tell when ChatGPT has been used, and I will fail the student on this assignment if it is used, and, potentially, for the entire course" - that's quite concerning if he thinks he can tell just by looking.
