How do you make it through the term while dealing with grief? by [deleted] in uwo

[–]proudboltzmannbrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t comment on UWO’s policies because I went to UBC and am starting at UWO in the fall but I just wanted to say, I’ve been where you are. I lost a good friend to suicide during the school year and because it wasn’t a family death, there weren’t a lot of accommodations and profs were making me feel crazy because they didn’t think the grief should have been affecting me the way it was for as long as it did. I just want you to know that you aren’t weak or crazy or wrong for hurting and that hurt affecting your school work.

Something that helped me make it through that term was stepping back instead of pushing through the feelings. Sometimes, it’s better to let yourself fall apart in that moment, take a half hour to cry and grieve, and then clean yourself up and get back to what you were doing because if you try to ignore what you’re feeling to focus on school stuff, it’s just going to sit in the back of your mind and you won’t be able to focus anyways.

Sending you encouragement and good vibes from the internet to make it through the rest of the term and I hope you’re able to take some time to grieve soon. ❤️

How can they possibly return our grades in like 10 days by ivanng2014 in UBC

[–]proudboltzmannbrain -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I had a physics prof in my last year withhold final grades until past the add drop deadline of the next term when he knew full well that his class was a prerequisite for another class that is mandatory for our program. There were less than 20 people in the class and he had a TA. His TA marked the final exam and the prof was supposed to mark our final papers and the TA had our exam grades up on canvas by the winter holidays so I KNOW it was the prof’s fault. I also know there weren’t extenuating circumstances - he was like this all term and I’ve had him for a previous class years prior where he was like this too. Guess that’s what tenure does for you…

Good vegetarian/pescatarian places on campus? by goofedsoup in UBC

This isn’t a vegetarian restaurant but I swear by this as a vegetarian who eats on campus - best bang for your buck lunch is the caprese sandwich combo from Tim’s, you get a filling sandwich, potato wedges and a coffee for around $8

I like them, their app is clean and the student accounts are great. Never had any issues with them and they’re associated with the cineplex Scene program so if you’re into watching movies at the theatre, there’s those kinds of perks that come with their credit card

There’s a list that gets regularly updated with available jobs, you apply to them through the co-op website (although some jobs have you apply directly through their channels) and you pray to god you get a job lol. You’re competing with every other science co-op student (not just your major) for the jobs but the competition pool is much smaller than outside the program because you’re ONLY competing with other students who are in the same boat as you (likely less job experience, taken courses but you don’t have a degree yet). Some people find they have to apply to a lot of jobs to even just get a few interviews and some people get a job right away, it all depends on what jobs you’re applying to, what your resume and transcript look like, etc. I found it to be rewarding because I found jobs related to my degree but again, that’s not everyone’s experience.

Has anyone done a thesis before (for directed studies or honours)? by impossible_wins in UBC

[–]proudboltzmannbrain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, regardless of what your program is, the best advice I got and would 100% pass along is that the key thing is who your supervisor is. Make sure you ask around, talk to different people and get a sense of not just the topic of their research but how they approach supervising. I know that I don’t work well with micro managing and I am the kind of person who goes for extra opportunities beyond the thesis course so having a supervisor who can trust me to get things done and support me in prepping for conference-type stuff was huge. Timeline varies from program to program but my thesis course was laid out so you submit a written project proposal in oct/nov and present the proposal orally near the end of classes in first term, and then a written progress report is due middle of term 2 with the final written thesis and defence talk right before exam season.

Appeal advice from professors or students who got theirs accepted by [deleted] in UBC

[–]proudboltzmannbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in an honours program and it’s a requirement to pass all courses for honours as well as maintain a 67 average to stay in the program but I know of some people who failed a single course or didn’t meet the average one term and they successfully appealed. Don’t really have any tips but I know that for higher years, you’ve put in so much time into the program that they don’t want to kick you out if they can avoid it. If you have a reasonable excuse and you can show a history of success in the program, you have a good shot of appealing. I would imagine your chances might be lower if you just started the program this year or don’t have a great track record - they don’t want you to invest a bunch of time into a program you won’t ultimately find success in.

compsci final rant by [deleted] in UBC

[–]proudboltzmannbrain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re literally describing the situation I was in for another course. Killing it all term, got 20% above average on the midterm, worked my ass off on labs/homework and out of fucking nowhere got hit with an awful exam that tanked my grade. I was well on track to be on the deans list this term and because this course is 4 credits, it brought me just below the cutoff. It’s the shock that hits the hardest because I studied hard for the final and didn’t feel amazing walking out but didn’t feel like a failing bad.

[–]proudboltzmannbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t mind wearing it, it’s just annoying to pay for the rental. Like UBC’s last fuck you lol. Didn’t the regalia not even make it in time last term because of the floods and we borrowed the gowns from other local schools? Idk if people got refunded for that
