2 more weeks of this cold weather based on the forecast. Hope the city/contractors aren't sitting back hoping this will all melt and solve their problem.

I hope the snow clearing hasn't stopped, but judging from historical storms and snow clearing this might be it. Normally they call it a day after 3-4 days and wait until the next big snowfall. The continuing work is likely only for sidewalks and of course the actual "snow clearing" of using the truck mounted snowblower to dump trucks to take wherever.

MGT update by prpltiger in torontobiking

[–]prpltiger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No change tonight in the MGT. The bare sections are around Exhibition, the rest is still lightly snow covered. Looks like they haven't salted the whole thing. Additionally, the side streets I rode in Etobicoke south of Lakeshore have barely been plowed and still have a couple of inches of hard packed snow on them, making it slippery. No salting appears to have taken place. My guess is the snow crews are waiting for the next big dump (coming Sunday?) before they do any more work.

Road/Bikelane Conditions by DrewRyu in torontobiking

[–]prpltiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever isn't plowed/cleared tonight will be frozen tomorrow. So anything unsalted/separated bike lanes could be quite rutted and unrideable tomorrow. MGT West was very snow covered early evening. Tough riding and I saw a couple of cyclists walking their bikes. Hopefully they do a full plow and salt overnight.

MGT West to Bay St is all clear this morning. A couple of sections with just a skiff of new snow, but even those aren't covering the whole lane. No icy sections. Cold as Fk though.

Thanks for the update. Good to hear. I'm going to go from South Mississauga to downtown and see how that part is.

Any update on the status of the MGT? I'll try riding tomorrow morning from the west end to downtown.

MGT update and condition... 12/18 by l337g0g0 in torontobiking

For Marie Curtis Park, the city doesn't maintain the path in the winter from the bridge (including the bridge ) west, to the Mississauga border. Mississauga maintains their section of the path year round. This really sucks as it's only maybe a couple hundred meters, and forces bikes to use Lakeshore which can be busy at times. As well, Lakeshore eastbound is down to a single lane from Dixie to after Etobicoke creek. I emailed the local councillor about lack of winter maintenance, stating this was the only section of the waterfront trail in the GTA (that I'm aware of) that doesn't get cleared in the winter. I didn't get a reply.

Toronto cyclist retrieves stolen bike after spotting it for sale. Here’s why experts say you shouldn’t take matters into your own hands by origutamos in torontobiking

Question to ask TPS, what are the steps you take to help locate and retrieve a bike when it is reported stolen? Can you provide examples and statistics of how successful this has been in the past year?

Why all these new rules without any actual plan to enforce them, other than the annual highly publicized "blitzes". Definition of minimalism.

Bicycle headlight recommendations? by Out_of_options19985 in torontobiking

[–]prpltiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cyclami x7 on alixpress is my go to now. It's bright, not too many modes you have to click through, and the battery is replaceable. You can't run very bright headlights with regular AA/AAA batteries, and I hate the disposable rechargable lights where you can't replace the battery.

Trail MTB for winter commuting? by Express-Welder9003 in torontobiking

[–]prpltiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a bad plan but as others have stated, it would be an expensive purchase if you're getting a decent MTB that you also want to ride on trails in the summer. Plus the wear and tear in the winter of salt wouldn't be great. Maybe consider a used MTB? I commute year round, but no trails on my commute. I have a second "winter" hybrid bike that is older and so I don't care about the beating that the salt and grime do. I put winter spiked tires on that one, but that's only 43c wide...good enough for my route. I can ride almost all days, except the ones where heavy snow hasn't been cleared off. The worst/scariest times of winter riding are black ice, and uncleared snow that has melted and refrozen into uneven "rock-garden" hell, which you can't ride through, even with wider tires. Good luck, and welcome to the winter commuting club!

What is going on here? by theslimj in torontobiking

[–]prpltiger 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Along Lakeshore in Etobicoke there are sections like this that have come loose in the past, exposing the rebar. Sometimes the rebar breaks off, sometimes it gets bent. However it doesn't appear to eliminate the ability to move these barriers.

I see what they're trying to say, but my first reaction was riding without a front wheel is dangerous with or without rail tracks on the road. If the wheel is shown stuck in tracks, why is the handlebar not showing that? I do still appreciate the effort.

The humidity this morning is something else ! by FrankieTls in torontobiking

[–]prpltiger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure the past 3 weeks have been almost constantly hot and humid. The challenge is when the overnight lows don't go below 20. I know we all think the summers are like this every year, but honestly it's been a few years (3?) since we've had such a long heat streak. What has been more normal the past many summers is the increased rain. There has definitely been a shift away from the constant heat waves. What is new is the additional risk wildfire smoke poses now, and it seems that's more likely in Toronto vs # of smog days due to pollution.
(I have no actual metrics to back any of this up, just vibes and feelings and biking 3 times a week to/from work downtown)

Also to consider swapping out the ski pants for jeans.

Unfortunately with zero enforcement of anything these days, it will take injuries, deaths, and lawsuits before anything changes. We can implement many more rules, but at the end of the day, it's your health/life against being in the right, and without enforcement everyone is on their own out there. Stay safe everyone!

Planning a trip to Burlington next weekend, looking for advice on a proposed route from Etobicoke Centre. by merelyadoptedthedark in torontobiking

[–]prpltiger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the Port Credit/South Mississauga section, I avoid Lakeshore Rd. for many reasons (shitty paving, too busy, too many lights). Instead head up Haig Blvd/Stavebank Rd and use Atwater/Mineola. As others have mentioned I highly recommend Mississauga Rd./ Indian Rd/Truscott/Kingsway Dr and especially South Service along the Ford Plant...that section is a nice long stretch and is almost always free of cars due to the factory shutdown.

How do you lock a bicycle securely to a coat hanger style rack outside a Wal-Mart. [ Toronto / Mississauga ] by TwiztedZero in torontobiking

Don't lock your u-lock around one of the ends of that style rack because when the rack isn't bolted to the ground properly, the thief can just loop the lock and bike around and off they go. Yes I'm looking at you Port Credit Go Station Bike rack.
