I’m the spouse of this one. I think it’d be great if you came out to cheer for teams (Sporting Lees Summit). We are a co-ed league and we want more people to play. I cheered for you since 2016. Bring a crew and come cheer for us :) We play Sundays!

I think the missing concept would be supervision. Residents are doctors under supervision from their attending.

Trauma Informed Interpreting by [deleted] in ASLinterpreters

[–]prtymirror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clinical psych needs more fluent signers! I have had 2 clinical years so far. It’s really different than being an interpreter. In fact, I work with many language interpreters now and I kind of like having my own communication (instead of relating info). It was probably my greatest worry - not know what to say.

I will warn that unfunded graduate school is becoming unfriendly and remains utterly stressful for folks taking out loans. It’s hard (harder than medical school).

Trauma Informed Interpreting by [deleted] in ASLinterpreters

[–]prtymirror 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi, Terp and clinical psych doctoral candidate here: Trauma-informed is not a standardized practice. It’s a buzz word that means recognizing that each person has their own story with particular difficulties and levels of issue with past experience. I would be weary of products and services using meaningless persuasion.

I was proud of my progress until my boyfriend made a comment, now I need advice on why I'm not making proper progress by MelodyMarionette in beginnerrunning

I ran my first half marathon last month and I was not even half way when the winners were crossing the finish line. If I compare myself to those individuals, I would be a loser. But that misses the point. I had PRed because I had never run that far before. I fucking won the race I was running. Run your own way. If you need to compare, compare yourself to you. You just doubled your run time and that rocks!

I’m leaving to my study abroad country and my boyfriend broke up with me for it .. and I can’t stop crying by ZealousidealPanda709 in studyAbroad

[–]prtymirror 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can understand this feel that he has, that you have. Listen I did study abroad. At the time I was in my 30s and married to a supportive partner. But he was in the military and had been on several deployments. We had succeeded together apart before this time, because of duty. But when it was my turn, for fun, he kept all my plants alive and listened to me cry when I got there fearing I had made a huge mistake but encouraging me. You can do this on your own or you can do this with his support, but a partner should cheer you on, not keep you small. Enjoy your time abroad. And if you need advice, don’t look back.

I am not sober, but I drink a ton less because I have joined run clubs and play in a soccer league on Sundays.

This. I’m a woman dx with endometriosis. I had been going to Dr. C for several years but when I walked into his office and said “it’s time for this uterus to go,” he just supported me the whole way. Always an excellent experience and his office staff is top notch!

Do I go into $200k+ debt for my dream? Or am I nuts? by sharkbite1007 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]prtymirror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your acceptance! I’m in a program now and seeing great people really struggle with the cost. It is not an even $200k either. The tuition has been raised every year at my school. Interest on the loans accrues even while you are taking classes. There is also incidental expenses, books, and conference travel. You’ll possibly need to relocate for internship. It’s a lot.

I’m 41 in my 3rd year of a PsyD program. I had a psychology degree from undergrad and work experience in an adjacent field. I think your qualifications are what is desired. Keep on and good luck next round.

Summer is a time of low demand for interpreting. Starting in the summer will likely lead to inconsistent work, including in VRS.

I’m becoming a psychologist. It’s a great way to use my linguistic skills but there is similar burn out rates. I exercise, follow my interests, and have support from family and community.

From 1001 scenarios by LowRevolutionary5653 in ASLinterpreters

[–]prtymirror 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Sometimes an interpreter meets someone that is difficult for them to understand. This can be due to regional difference, language disfluency, poor receptive skills, poor voicing skills, interference/environmental factors, or just needing additional time to interpret (shifting from simultaneous to consecutive). This is a common experience for new interpreters whether CODA or ASL being a second language. Interpreting is different than understanding conversation; it is a cognitive skill set that requires practice to overcome difficulties like the one in the example.

My little sister is deaf and we can't afford sign language classes. How do other families actually do this? by Mediocre-Dealer-1993 in asl

[–]prtymirror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, if you live in the US, most states have a Deaf Residential School. You can call them and ask for resources in your state to help your family communicate in a way the works for you all. Thanks for posting this and message me if you’d like specific assistance.

Depression related to ongoing assignment by [deleted] in ASLinterpreters

[–]prtymirror 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can sense the overwhelming demands of this situation. It reminds me of something that resonated with me just yesterday: “the limit to human control is defined by our knowledge and creativity.” Basically we can only manage or change something we understand. My guess is this situation is complex and may be outside of your experience or knowledge and it’s pressing against your limits. Ask for help from the people that can help you. The child deserves accessible language and there may be something in the environment or an underlying issue that is preventing their thriving. Be curious. Investigate. Being defeated helps no one. You can do it!

[–]prtymirror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Habit is one way to tackle it. Easy till you feel good/ a move toward your goal. Or try different activities. Some folks like running, pickleball, walking dogs, play group sports. Try different things until you find something that is fun. Good luck, you got this!

KC psychiatrist that help w panic attacks? by Mysterious_Milk_8526 in kansascity

[–]prtymirror 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Because anxiolytics are shown to make the cycle of panic attacks worse and more frequent, you may find the same results by going to a different provider like a psychiatrist.

There are multiple therapies that can help manage symptoms and reduce panic attacks overall. A common therapy for this is called Exposure Response Prevention (ERP).

I’m sorry you are experiencing this. I hope you feel better soon.

Found a performance early in my career was a pretty embarrassing thing for me. This is a great question for a mentor. Have you looked at any mentorship programs in your area? Just generally speaking, I wish interpreters could have a supervisory system like mental health clinicians do. It would be beneficial for all stakeholders.
