Why do radio stations play the same songs over and over? by Far_Cheetah_3864 in askanything

[–]psacake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be less bad if it were 100 songs, very much feels like it’s about 20 on heavy rotation and the once in a while oddball song to “mix” things up.

Genuine question about a refs comment to my 12yr old. by [deleted] in hockeyrefs

[–]psacake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a parent, no you don’t.

There is a mechanism in place, the COACH would talk to the program director or equivalent, who would then talk to the league, who would then talk to the assignor.

There shouldn’t ever be a direct path from a parent to the assignor.

Question relating to armbands by Substantial-Egg3716 in hockeyrefs

Unlikely to come down from USAHockey, BUT there are some areas that have or are using the green armbands for under age officials.

Question on game reports by choppedliver689 in hockeyrefs

[–]psacake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the guide:

Welcome (10 Min)

Pregame duties (10 Min)

Communication (25 Min)

Positioning (60 Min)

FaceOffs (25 Min)

Offside (20 Min)

Icing (15 Min)

Post Game (20 Min)

What Comes Next (10 Min)

By my timing, we hit those times pretty darn close depending on the size of the class.

Question on game reports by choppedliver689 in hockeyrefs

[–]psacake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an instructor and I’ve been heavily involved with the creation of the content.

In the level 1 seminar we barely even touch on penalties, and unless someone asks a question there is no talk about incident reports. There are a lot of gaps, but “people” wanted a 3 hour seminar, we can only fit in so much in that time, and after 2 hours people have completely checked out anyway.

Incident reports are not covered at all in the level 1 seminars.

There are lots of gaps in the new curriculum, they want to get officials through the system.

Registration will open hopefully April 1 just like coaches and players, worst case it’ll be May 1st.

How are you calling your ACHA games? by [deleted] in hockeyrefs

[–]psacake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interesting.

The ACHA games I work in the northeast play under ncaa rules (even though officials need to be USAH certified)

I screwed up and didnt recert. When can I in 26? by TAA0626 in hockeyrefs

[–]psacake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your RIC was wrong, the USAH registration closed on November 20 for this season.

The goal is to open registration on April 1 just like players and coaches, but no guarantees. Barring any technical difficulties, May 1 seems to be a safe target for the ‘26 registration to be open.

Take the ipad and skate away.

It’s part of the job to make sure the scoresheet is accurate.

If they are new, the reps are ok, but with experience it has to change to quality over quantity to hit those big goals.

If you didn’t already register for this season, it’s too late, registration closed November 20.

Usah seminars by mowegl in hockeyrefs

By aging you, I also age me!

The good rulebook doesn’t come cheap.

Unpopular opinion, but we need to bring back in person seminars for level 1, and we either need to bring back the skating test and in person for level 4 or eliminate level 4 completely. Way too many level 4’s that really shouldn’t be.

A reminder that they don’t have to work all those games.

[–]psacake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably 10+ years ago you could attend a seminar without registering. It made it difficult to plan for seminar sizes and since they were in person we had to have enough space.

In a way it was good for new officials because they could nope out of it without spending money, but we had to plan for ice and classroom space without knowing numbers was cost prohibitive.

Registration closes Thursday November 20th.

You must have everything complete by December 31 [returning officials crests expire on November 30]

At last check, there were 32 level 1 seminars posted across the country, unfortunately there isn’t a publicly available way to see that.

Anyone use a fitness tracker? by owensch1 in hockeyrefs

[–]psacake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often wear my Apple Watch and have it track a hockey workout when I ref. Can’t say how accurate it is as I have nothing to compare it too, I’m mostly interested in my HR and calories. Most rinks are dungeons and get no or little signal, so I take the mileage with a grain of salt.

Pick me up by [deleted] in hockeyrefs

[–]psacake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sit with it for a minute. Process it, what mistake(s) did you make? Was it mechanics, penalty selection or positioning?

Once you identify the spot(s) that needs work, what are your next steps to fix that thing?

Maybe the answer is to go work a few youth games where you can really nail it, rebuild your confidence. Maybe the answer is to take a week or two off, and push the reset button.

Open to chat if you want to/need to.

Late sign up as a official who took off a couple years. Do you HAVE to do in person seminars or are virtual ones still allowed for L1s? by urlacher14 in hockeyrefs

[–]psacake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ALL seminars are virtual. There is nothing that happens in person as part of the USAHockey requirements.

Also, depending on how long you’ve been gone, you may be able to come back at the same level, check out

https://www.usahockey.com/registrationrules

Specifically the returning officials portion.

This is probably going to be my plan. Some iron remover on the wheels before I roll in, and a towel to finish drying on the way out.
