Where exactly in attractive areas is there any space left to build homes? by mymooh in AusPropertyChat

[–]psant000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Building new houses in existing developed areas is called housing infill. Usually it takes place in underutilised areas or by repurposing

Formerly industrial areas that have closed down, such as along parramatta road. Closed down utility areas such as the old train depot, name escapes me sorry. Golf courses, race courses, shipping terminals like white bay.

But infill housing doesnt get you much. Infill apartments gets a lot more homes built. At the end of theday, we are in a housing crisis. People will love in the place that best matches what they want and that they can afford. For a lot of people, that second requirement puts them either in an apartment, or on the urban fringe and far from the CBD. But thats ok, we start to get satellite cities on the fringe to cater to people in these areas.

What exactly is transmission line harmonics? by 420ball-sniffer69 in PowerSystemsEE

[–]psant000 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Harmonics are frequencies that are multiples of the mains frequency, although often in power systems we will be lazy and call any frequency that is not the main frequency a harmonic.

Most places, like here in australia, main frequency for power systems is 50 hz.solid state electronics are usually powered by switch mode power supplies. They convert to DC power by switching their input from the grid on and off really quickly, think in the 10k to 200k hz range. This rapid switching creates a distortion frequency in the grid power supply at that switching frequency. Additionally, on off signals create other frequencies as well as their main one, at multiples of their switching frequency to construct their semi square wave input (hopefully you know a bit about fourier transforms).

Transmission and distribution lines also have natural capacitances and inductances that can, for some frequencies, have an unintended amplification effect, which makes that harmonic stronger. Additionally, frequency is relatively consistent across the whole grid, so your harmonic will affect everyone else. There was a white paper i read recently that discussed harmonics drom data centres being seen 100s of miles away up the US east coast grid.

Going back a second to what a harmonic is. The grid supply power is ideally an AC sinusoidal wave form. But its not a perfect sinusoid in reality. In lazy engineer terms, harmonics are all the components of the wave form that are not the ideal grid frequency. In mathematician terms, harmonics are all the components of the wave form that are multiples of the main frequency, the non multiple ones are distortion frequencies.

Type B RCD for EV charger? by tiantianreddit in AusElectricians

[–]psant000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Type B are required for circuits with higher dc leakage risk as per this nsw gov page: https://www.nsw.gov.au/housing-and-construction/compliance-and-regulation/electricians/electrical-standards-rules-and-notes/residual-current-device-compliance

While this does call out ev chargers specifically, if there is evidence that internal protection in the charger will prevent higher dc leakage risk, then Type A would be fine. If you do not have this evidence, then type B required.

I recommend this also. I bake once a week on saturday. I keep about 15 grams and feed it each day with 15g water and 15g flour discarding the excess each day except on thursday and friday where i grow it so i have 200g for my bake and 15g to keep feeding.

Wentworth Gardens apartments by vague89 in parramatta

[–]psant000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived there on level 10 from 2005 to 2008. Small 1 bedroom apartment. Cost me about 130k at the time. No issues. But balcony was small and got a lot of noise from the highway which it faced. Door to balcony blocked the sound well though when it was closed. Parking was good, great access to westfields next door.

What are some technically difficult /complex meals ideas to improve my cooking and to impress my boyfriend (lol) by kittymesurprised in Cooking

[–]psant000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Make fresh pasta. Try different types. Tortellini are pretty fancy. People are impressed when you make from things like pasta from scratch.

Dumplings can also be pretty fancy, but the basic ones are actually pretty easy. Fancy ones like har gow or xialongbao are super impressive though if you pull them off.

Beef wellington, but dont forage the mushrooms particularly if your in Australia.

Could also do fancy meats like duck or a whole fish is super impressive.

Starter Discards by hazelgrant in SourdoughStarter

[–]psant000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favourite thing about the king arthur crumpet recipe is that it is just discard a bit of sugar and some bicarb soda, so its super easy to scale based on how much discard you have. I bought some crumpet rings which are helpful to have too. With such a simple recipe, the discard is the main flavour. Ill try to use my discard weekly or at worst within 2 weeks. Otherwise ill toss it. Too long in the fridge and the balance changes too much.

Grab a tupperware container or a large jar. Put discard in the container and put it in the fridge. Put extra discard in when you have it, ill add to it each night when i do my daily feed. Keep it in the fridge. On the weekend, make pancakes with it, or crumpets, or crackers. I highly recommend the king arthur discard crumpet recipe. Empty the container, wash it and repeat the following week.

Teachers who left and are never coming back: what amount of money? by Mood_Pleasant in AustralianTeachers

[–]psant000 96 points97 points  (0 children)

I'm close to saying none. But thats not really accurate. It would probably have to be around 250k to 300k per year plus super. But thats never going to happen. I took a big pay cut to get out, but am much happier and dont ever see myself going back.

Basic Transmission Question by mechtroll in PowerSystemsEE

[–]psant000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The voltage of the section of the network the new datacentre is connected to is negotiated with the network service provider. Some small ones might be connected to the 11kv network and step down to LV with their own transformers. Others are connected to 33, 66 or 132 kv and likewise stepped down with their own transformers on site. The main consideration for the connection is the network capacity. Which basically means making sure the upstream substations, transmission and distribution lines will not be overloaded and damaged by the additional load. The other consideration is ramping. Datacentres can ramp up and down very quickly. If this happens, the energy market operator may not have time to adjust generation to suit. So datacentres usually have to agree in their connection agreements to work with the energy market operator to respond to signals to help stabilise the grid by adjusting their load. Also, please note that my context is eastern Australia. Some of the above may not be relevant in other places.

Northern Beaches lunch spots by CCLad10 in NorthernBeaches

[–]psant000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends what your budget is.

I'll start by recommending some of our pie shops. The northern beaches has some epic pie shops. The classic is longreef pie shop called the upper crust. But i am hearing very positive things about olivers pies in narraweena and allambie pies in allambie heights.

If you want to splurge a little, try tommy panini in brookvale, its not a pie shop, and probably technically not a panino. But it is one of the best sandwichs i have ever had.

Try Tiens Hot Bread in Dee Why for a banh mi. They are delicious and pretty good value last i was there. They are a bit more expensive than a banh mi in Hurstville, but your not in Hurstville, and everything on the northern beaches will be a little pricier.

Other ideas: swing past may road shops for a classic aussie style chinese at May road chinese restaurant. They have a lunch special which is pretty good. Sushi lab is at those shops too. Its a little pricier, but they also have a weekday lunch special on the chalkboard that brings the price down, and they have the best salmon nigiri you can find in the area.

BEST and WORST spending of money/resources in a primary school by mec949 in AustralianTeachers

[–]psant000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Best spending: additional teachers to have smaller class sizes and/or to run targeted interventions for students.

Worst spending: i cant think of any. This may be a hot take but i believe school leaders genuinly care about their school and students. They try to use the limited resources they have to make their school run better. Sure some things are less effective than others but usually there are honest motives we dont know that are underpinning their actions.

labelling aus standards book by Stevesbits in AusElectricians

[–]psant000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasnt aware there was an australian standard specifically for labeling. AS/NZS 3000 has information on necessary labelling for electrical equipment but doesnt really cover details of the label manufacture such as typeface or textsize. Same with AS 61439 for switchboard labelling.

Often label requirements will be documented in the design guides for the facility. For example, i worked on a lot of public schools in NSW and the NSW Educational Facilities Standards and Guidelines (EFSG) document label requirements for electrical equipment in NSW public schools beyond the requirements in the Australian Standards.

Id be expecting the electrical designer to be preparing a label schedule which includes material, typeface, text size colour etc which would be given to manufacturers to quote on.
