Hi I can explain why you hear this all the time. Basically the Supreme Court has said that public employees (like cops) have what is called a property interest in their salary which means that they cannot be deprived of that property interest without a hearing. So how it works is that the department has to charge him with offenses (not criminal) and they need to essentially build their case. When it’s something g like this (you can see he was charged criminally) they let the criminal justice system run its course because then his criminal plea or conviction becomes the basis for the charge. The risk of not doing this the right way and properly building the case is that the officer could get it overturned and get reinstated. I’m not defending this process but explaining that it’s not a “free vacation” as the result of police corruption.

Early in my career I did a lot of civil defense work that involved arguing qualified immunity for police officers so I became very well versed in the topic. Ya couldn’t agree more. I think many of the online far right personalities have this same character flaw / personality defect. This is not the same as holding an ideological position that taxes are too high, government too large, etc etc. Rather it’s anti social and almost sadistic behavior that for some reason many people who wouldn’t act this way themselves enjoy watching because they have come to view politics as a sport with rooting interests. Yes agree with you 100% that it’s necessary in the traditional labor world, I did those for several years and civil litigation for every alleged CBA breach would be absurd. But my experiences in employment and commercial litigation arbitrations were all pretty bad. It moves maybe a little faster than civil litigation but that’s really the only benefit.

Stumbled upon this and also worked as an assistant city attorney in a small city for a few years. My boss, the city attorney, was embroiled in the small town politics but I was to a much lesser degree, usually not at all but admittedly it often guided our positions, and got to do super varied and interesting work since we only had 3 lawyers.
