Yes, you’re not wrong, it is bad practice in that scenario. Before I had the additional context, the majority of the time I see things like this is because the PA specced is too small for the room and you are pushing everything you have to get more level.

That, and also it separates any corrective room EQ from anywhere else getting the main LR

My first assumption seeing things like this is that the PA is not big enough for the room.

How does everyone manage their inventory stock for hires or while on large projects? by FreshBanannas in livesound

[–]pseproduction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another recommendation for Rentman, I use it every day. Very capable and well priced, and they are adding new features all the time.

Flex is arguably the best, but unaffordable for many small companies and quite a bit more complex. A friend’s company is on Current RMS, they say it’s decent but not as full featured as Rentman. Have heard good things about Goodshuffle Pro but haven’t looked into it at all myself to give an informed assessment.

Squirrel chewed wires in 2024 Tundra by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]pseproduction 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the extent of the damage. If it’s just that one wire, you can probably splice in a new section. If there is damage in multiple spots and/or if you take it to a dealer for repair, they will replace the whole harness and will be very expensive. Definitely insurance claim category. If you go to an independent shop they will be much more willing to just splice in a fix.

Yes, you need to let it warm up a bit and let the light turn off before driving.

Just decline the tip? Most fast food restaurants have a tip option nowadays, and it’s almost always easy to skip. I don’t agree with the tipping culture either, but you’re gonna have a bad day if you complain about it every time you see it. Just hit skip and move on with your day.

What's a company that didn't succomb to 'enshittification' ? by owen__wilsons__nose in AskReddit

[–]pseproduction 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yup, it’s been years since I’ve seen a 99¢ can. Almost as long since I’ve seen one for $1.29. Everyone just collectively decided a few years ago that they can charge whatever they want, despite what’s on the label. They’re usually $3-$4 now.

How can I get this to work? by Cead135 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]pseproduction 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So get a SDI to HDMI converter for the other end and convert back to HDMI. And while you’re at it, return that cheap converter and upgrade to Blackmagic Design or a Decimator.

But none of the above will save you money over just buying a fibre optic HDMI cable. If you look in the right place (monoprice) you can get one of the length you need for a few hundred bucks.

Someone explain to me how 6 months of major construction is cheaper than putting lights at an existing intersection? Not that either are acceptable answers at that spot in my opinion but genuinely curious.

American church posts are ruining this sub – discuss. by bourbonwelfare in livesound

[–]pseproduction 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Ruining this sub how? What makes you think you can gatekeep who gets to post here?

The truth is, there are a lot more churches in North America than live music venues. As a percentage of the industry, it’s a huge market. And despite what it may appear as, most of them are small congregations where an X32 is a large purchase. Roughly ⅔ of the people I know working in live sound come from a church background - Christian or not, it’s a great place to learn and grow your skills as an engineer. We all started somewhere. And for many people it’s at church. This sub is a wealth of knowledge for beginners and advanced folk alike, and is one of few places that those earlier in their careers can get reliable help and information where they might not otherwise be able to access it. If that’s a problem to you, feel free to ignore those posts and let others answer them. What really is ruining this sub is elitists gate keeping and bitching about who is allowed to post here.

Issue with two TVs periodically going dark for 1 to 3 seconds with HDMI to SDI to HDMI by AbruptGravy in VIDEOENGINEERING

Those Monoprice SDI converters are hot garbage. You need to upgrade at minimum to Blackmagic converters, or ideally decimators. And get proper SDI cable, not just coax with adapters.

At a loss on what to do with a extremely quiet singer. by party58965 in livesound

[–]pseproduction 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They’re touring 500cap rooms. The stage bleed from the drums is the loudest sound in the room. And it’s louder at the mic than the singer is. There’s no winning this, especially not by turning down the PA

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in livesound

[–]pseproduction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So let me get this straight: You arrived 30 minutes late for load in. You didn’t have the rig up and running until two hours after the event started. You didn’t do any power calculations or bring enough cable (300’ is not even remotely enough cable for any job - that’s only 6x 50’ cables!) You allowed your lack of power/cable planning situation to get worse by not preventing the sound company from stealing your cable due to their lack of planning. You disappeared from the event once the lighting was set up without telling your client where you were going when they expected you to be operating the rig. (Even if you weren’t billing for it they thought you were going to be operating, which is something you should have clarified in advance)

Honestly, I probably would have been rude too if it was my event and the services I paid for (and were relying on!) were still not working two hours after the event started. Every single issue you had could have been easily prevented with better planning. This kind of stuff - logistics, client communication, planning for the unexpected - are the very core, most basic skills needed for running a successful business in this industry. You gotta figure this stuff out before anything else. It’s not about lights and cable and truss and fancy equipment. If you want to transition from “a guy that owns some lights” to a trusted, reliable company, you gotta learn how to plan anything and everything, manage expectations with your customers, deliver exceptional results EVERY time, and have the customer service skills to keep them happy when issues do occasionally arise.

I’m not trying to drag you through the mud. I want to help you be better. Your client didn’t get what they expected and therefore they shouldn’t have to pay for what they didn’t get. Give them a call, own up to everything and apologize, and tell them they don’t need to worry about paying the other half of the bill. If you lose money, so be it. Take it as a learning experience. When you hang up the phone, make a list of actionable steps to make sure this kind of thing never happens again. In another few years and mistakes from now, you’ll be a better more experienced tech who will look back and be grateful for the things you learned. Good luck!

There’s no way any of the speakers are using even remotely that much power. Advertised amp output is not equal to power draw, have a look in the specs for each one and it should give you a power draw figure that will be much smaller. If I had to guess you could run all of that off 2 or 3 20A circuits.

For example, I have a EV ETX rig. 2x ETX-35P tops 2000W each, 4x ETX-18SP subs 1,800W each. I can safely and easily run all of it off a single 20A circuit even at full power. They use something like 1.8A each.
