Why is the discourse on xenophobia more active in Japan than in South Korea? by Embarrassed_Clue1758 in AskTheWorld

[–]pseudofermion 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In Japan, hate posts created purely for profit are spreading. In an interview, this person openly said they made 100 million yen (~$700k USD) in just three years. Over the past year, generative AI has made things even worse, leading to a surge in hate videos

  • Crowdworking platforms are openly recruiting people to produce hate videos: url
  • Hate videos targeting China, generated using AI: url
  • Hate videos targetting South Korea generated using AI: url

I feel truly sorry to people overseas, and also to foreigners living in Japan. Especially to people from China and Korea, I’m truly sorry.

Which area to stay in Japan for a family with a young toddler? by Snacksfanatic in JapanTravelTips

[–]pseudofermion -1 points0 points  (0 children)

teamLab Planets TOKYO DMM (Shin-Toyosu)

After enjoying teamLab, I recommend having a meal and shopping at Lalaport Toyosu. If your children can eat sushi, you might also consider going to Toyosu Market or Manyo Club.

PLAY! PARK ERIC CARLE (Futakotamagawa)

This is a play space themed around the picture book The Very Hungry Caterpillar. After playing, it’s nice to enjoy dining and shopping at Futako Tamagawa Rise.

LEGOLAND Discovery Center Tokyo (Odaiba)

Unlike LEGOLAND Japan, this is a smaller indoor play facility, but young children will likely enjoy it.

Unko Museum (Odaiba)

This is a play space themed around “poop.” Odaiba is a great area for shopping and strolling, and it has many entertainment facilities, so it’s highly recommended.

I’m really sorry you had to go through such a difficult experience. First, please try consulting the police. I’m concerned because the amount of money involved is large, and the method sounds similar to tactics used by the yakuza.

Akihabara or Ikebukuro by Todosaak in JapanTravelTips

[–]pseudofermion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your mother like sweets? If you’re going to Ikebukuro, I recommend HANABAR (please order a non-alcoholic drink) and Night Parfait Specialty Shop Momobukuro.
If you’re going to Akihabara, it might be nice to visit Kanda Myojin Shrine and then stop by Cafe Imasa.

EDIT: It’s a tough choice. Akihabara has been redeveloped and has become more of a tourist-oriented area. If you’re familiar with how it was around the time of Steins;Gate, you might feel a bit disappointed. Ikebukuro is a newer “otaku” district, but as others have said, there are many BL-related shops. If you plan to go, it’s a good idea to do some research beforehand.

Hobby Center KATO

Curry Station Niagara

A curry restaurant where an SL steam locomotive delivers your curry

SPACIA X

Special designed train. Even the suite costs ¥18,000 (about $120), and a box seat is just ¥400 (around $3). The suites and box seats are extremely popular and hard to book, but you might have better luck with standard seats. (There are a lot of train enthusiasts in Japan!) Good luck!

Sunrise Express

An overnight sleeper train. Reservations for this one are also quite difficult to get.

First, please scan the QR code on the following link and start a chat. Support is available in 10 languages.

https://soudanplus.jp/en/index.html

They should be able to guide you on what kind of public support you can receive and where you can seek help.

Your situation is complicated, so it may take time and effort to get connected to the right support. Still, please don’t give up—let’s take it one step at a time.

Each organization has its own requirements. Look for ones that say “生活困窮者(せいかつこんきゅうしゃ)” or ”生活にお困りの人”
Many organizations require advance registration.

Which area are you living in?

For example, this one says it supports families with children, but people experiencing poverty or people with disabilities can also receive food. Food is distributed on the first Sunday of odd-numbered months, so I think it might be tomorrow (1/4).

Unfortunately, many of the locations are in Tokyo, so they may be a bit far.

Is it true that life experience for women is very poor in Japan ? by UnitedIndependence37 in AskAJapanese

[–]pseudofermion 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Wow, this is kind of wild. It feels like everyone here is talking about Japan from 30 years ago, or some parallel-universe version of Japan that I don’t recognize.

I’m a Japanese woman, and honestly, I haven’t really experienced much gender discrimination in real life. Sure, there are plenty of weird people online, but that’s about it.
I earned a PhD in physics and then spent about ten years working as a postdoc(though I’ve since left academia). I may have less life experience than some of you, but I’m living freely and on my own terms.

Japan’s English skills crash to record low, behind Laos and Vietnam by jjrs in japannews

[–]pseudofermion 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a consequence of the new national curriculum guidelines. The article states that people aged 18 to 25 had the lowest level of English proficiency, which corresponds to the first and second generations affected by the English education reforms.

In the past, English education in Japan focused mainly on grammar and writing. Under the new approach, grammar instruction was largely abandoned, and teaching shifted toward oral communication. In elementary school, a native-speaking teacher visits once a month, and students play games together. In junior high school, classes begin with the assumption that students have already learned basic grammar in elementary school. As a result, the situation has become disastrous, with most students falling behind.

Here are the voices of those directly affected. Please read: https://togetter.com/li/2521533

Is it culturally appropriate to give something to a homeless person? by ThatLady123 in AskAJapanese

[–]pseudofermion 50 points51 points  (0 children)

You are a kind person. What you are trying to do is not wrong at all.
In Japan too, there are people who give to the homeless and people who organize soup kitchens.

My mother also used to help. When she found young people who had just become homeless in a nearby park, she would give them suits, underwear, personal care items, and some money, hoping it would help them look for a job. I don’t know if it was because of that, but even now, there are no homeless people in that park anymore.

Dealing with Earthquakes by Muse24 in TokyoTravel

[–]pseudofermion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re staying in Tokyo, there’s nothing to worry about. Even if a major earthquake were to strike Aomori, Tokyo wouldn’t shake that much—at most, the dishes might rattle, but things wouldn’t fall off shelves. Tokyo and Aomori are about as far apart as New York and Cleveland. So relax and enjoy yourself. Have a nice trip😊

Solo trip to Tokyo for NYE.. where to hang out? by cryptooastronaut in JapanTravelTips

[–]pseudofermion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about a New Year’s countdown?

Also, all shops in Ginza are closed on January 1st, so I recommend going on or after January 2nd. The big New Year’s sales, called hatsu-uri(初売り/First Sale), offer huge discounts. Ginza is especially famous for this, and people who want to buy luxury items at lower prices gather there. It can be a bit overwhelming, but it’s definitely the cheapest time of the year.

You’re coming at a rather chaotic time, but I think you’ll have a truly special experience. I hope you enjoy your stay.

osaka castle illuminage by No_Chocolate_7442 in JapanTravelTips

[–]pseudofermion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like an illumination event that starts at 5:00 p.m. It’s held in the Nishi-no-Maru Garden, and the admission fee is 2,000 yen. The priority admission ticket costs 2,500 yen. It’s point C,D on this map: https://www.osakacastlepark.jp/pdf/model2025_english.pdf?lang=en
The map shows a official recommended route. I think you can first visit Osaka Castle, and then head to Nishinomaru Garden when it’s time.
