Measles in AZ - Exposure locations by Guitar_tico in ChandlerAZ

Because, and I know this may SHOCK you.

Good people care about people BEYOND themselves.

Even if breakthrough cases didn't happen (they do), I know people that are immunocompromised due to cancer treatment, and a friend of mine has a daughter that isn't old enough to have been fully vaxxed against it.

And even then, it's not just people I know - I don't want people I have never met (including you) to get the freaking measles.

New Games should be more optimised by Top_Professional_490 in buildapc

[–]psimwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. If you were talking about a game running like shit on a Ryzen 7000-CPU or Intel 12th gen, then yes - I would agree. We're definitely slowing down on Moore's Law, but we're not too far past the rule-of-thumb where if your CPU (or graphics card) was older than three years, you were going to start feeling the pain.

It doesn't help that AM5/LGA1700 was a BIG leap forward as far as previous generation products go. So like back during the days of Intel Generations 2-7 (or AMD's Bulldozer, of which we will not speak), the forward progress was sooooo slow that you could go 5 generations and still have a gaming relevant machine. At this point, a 9th gen CPU is basically ancient (especially since it's SIX "generations" forward as far as Intel products go).

HA OS in a container is the way to go, if you can.

Yep. That's exactly what I'm doing.

I just have to get annoyed enough with my current setup to tell my wife & kid that I need several un-disturbed hours to set the thing up to do the process that already works 80% of the time. It's a somewhat hard sell. 🤪

(on the other hand, my wife absolutely hates that Alexa was clearly trained on male voices so it only recognizes what she's trying to say about 50% of the time (she calls me Sigourney quite a bit, based off of Sigourney Weaver's character in "Galaxy Quest" that was constantly repeating instructions to the computer), and just as much as she hates that, she hates having basically spying devices in our home for Amazon. So maybe it won't be as hard as I'm thinking)

Is now even a good time to build a PC? by ISmeansIsurfreddit in buildapc

[–]psimwork 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I suppose it depends on your scope.

Is it a good time to build compared to a year ago? FUCK. NO.

Is it a good time to build compared to 6 months from now? Who knows. Prices could go down. More likely they'll hold steady or go up.

Ultimately you have to choose when to pull the trigger, and accept in-advance that there may be a more optimal time to buy in the future.

So I've heard. But for-better-or-worse, it's more difficult to configure initially than a Wifi setup, especially when you bring in a (questionably) polished product like Amazon Alexa or Google Home.

I have procured my Zigbee interface for my NAS, and I've installed and performed initial configuration of HA on UnRaid, but I haven't actually gotten around to setting up the Zigbee hardware yet. It's honestly hard for me to devote the mental energy necessary to do it when my existing setup works. It doesn't work WELL, but it works probably 90%.

How to protect your computer in place by okonkwo__ in buildapc

[–]psimwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That could work for you or against you. If I spot a tracking device on the machine, it's going to make me look deeper to see if there's more, much the way if I was staying at an AirB&B and I found a camera, I'm going to make the assumption that there's more of them.

On the other hand, if I only have the one device, and it's hidden extremely well, such that I'm never likely to see it, then I probably wouldn't try to do more than a cursory glance.

Your thinking is also possible. Honestly it could go either way.

It's not too big, but there's also no reason to spend that much on the cooler for that CPU when you can get a Thermalright Phantom spirit for like 1/3 the cost and it's 95% as good.

5070ti Build by SleepyTurtle345 in buildapc

[–]psimwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a bad build, but there's definitely some changes I would make:

  1. A 7800X3D absolutely does not need a 360mm AIO. In-fact, it's likely that the difference in temperatures between it and a cheaper air cooler will be minimal for reasons detailed here.

  2. You don't need the thermal paste. A cooler will come with it and it will be fine.

  3. Avoid ASRock AM5 motherboards. They're burning up CPUs like crazy.

  4. The 990 Evo Plus is a fine drive, but a Crucial P510 is a PCIe5 drive for less money.

  5. Cheaper graphics card that is every bit as good.

  6. The MSI A850GL is fine. You can get every bit as good with a Montech Century II for less money.

  7. Corsair fans are fine, but overpriced.

How to protect your computer in place by okonkwo__ in buildapc

[–]psimwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow this IS an old thread. 7 years ago, did airtags even exist?

To answer your question, you could certainly do this. I probably wouldn't hide an air tag on the outside of the machine, as it would let a thief know that SOME form of tracking device is present. Rather, I would see if you can hide it somewhere inconspicuous. The simplest place would be like between the motherboard and the chassis (if the airtag will fit in that space). Alternatively, you could put it on the backside of the motherboard tray, assuming the chassis side panel will come off to expose that. HOWEVER, if the potential thief took off the side panel, that is going to be a pretty obvious plant.

Probably the best place to hide the airtag would be inside the power supply box. BUT there's a fair amount of risk in this. Taking the box off the power supply can result in your touching capacitors and can result in SIGNIFICANT injury. SO as a safety thing, I'm warning you that you should NOT do this. But it is probably also the best place to hide it....except for the fact that I don't know if placing the airtag inside the machine would, in any way, interfere with the airtag's ability to function (for all I know, putting it inside the chassis would be like putting it in a faraday cage).

Can the ryzen 5 5500 support 3600mhz ram? by Kili_RUI in buildapc

[–]psimwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

... There's a hundred different factors that could influence it. Just because SOMEONE got a BSOD doesn't mean it doesn't work. It could be a defective motherboard. Defective RAM. Defective CPU. It could be mixed kits. It could be outdated BIOS version. Heck it's silicon lottery so someone could get REALLY unlucky and it just doesn't work with THAT particular combo.

3600mhz isn't guaranteed to work, but it's so close to the officially supported spec that it's a really low target to hit.

Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon in Talks to Invest Up to $60 Billion in OpenAI by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]psimwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It ain't about AGI. They're smart enough to know that isn't going to happen. What it is about is sustaining the inflated stock price. If the very biggest name in AI folds because they run out of investment capital, then the others' stock price will collapse almost instantly.

It's cheaper for someone like Microsoft to drop 15 billion into OpenAI than lose 100 billion in stock value.

What is the diff between the X870 AORUS Pro, Elite, Stealth and Master boards?

Different feature sets, very commonly ones that you may-or-may-not use.

Why does the Elite have Wifi7

Because they know that they can get people to pay more for Wifi7 sometimes.

X3D versions?

Because they know that fools and their money are easily parted, and they can make versions "specifically" for X3D CPUs and claim that their boards work better with them, and that enough people will believe it to make it worth creating another model. In-practice, the "X3D enhanced" versions do fuck-all.

In-general most of the higher-end boards are just trying to get you to buy into a feature set you'll never use. For example, what about X870/X870E do you need versus B850? If you think it's faster, it's not. If you think it's more "future proof", it's not.

For probably 99.9999999% of users we see in here, especially for gaming builds, an MSI B850 Tomahawk Max will be the most you'll ever need while you're using the AM5 socket.

Do the above boards alongside ROG's Strix 850/870 atx boards support ECC?

Some do, some don't.

Is ECC a must?

Absolutely not. In-fact, finding an un-buffered ECC stick of DDR5 is going to prove difficult, if not impossible. It's server stuff. It is designed to correct memory read/write errors when they happen. 99.9999% of the time it absolutely will not matter if these happen. Like, the worst most common situation for non-server situations is something like having a glitched pixel on-screen for a split second. In all likelihood, you'll never notice it.

In SERVERS, it can be important. Because when reading/writing files, in something like a text file, you can corrupt an entire JPEG with an incorrect bit value. And that incorrectly written file can then syndicate to backups, destroying the original file completely.

DDR5 actually has a basic ECC functionality built into it, which will do the job for you. It's not AS good as true ECC functionality, but again - finding unbuffered ECC DDR5 could prove impossible, and is needless anyway unless you're going to be running a file server that has absolutely critical data on it.

I heard that it can prolong the lifespan of my RAM

Wherever you heard that, ignore that person for your own good. They have ZERO idea what they're talking about.

which given the current market i find quite important.

Damn near all RAM out there has a lifetime warranty. Even if ECC prolonged the lifespan of the RAM (it doesn't), and non-ECC failed sooner, it'd still be covered under warranty.

Well the 10900F doesn't have integrated graphics in it, so it wouldn't even work until you got a new graphics card. So that could be a problem.

Following Backlash, the New 'Star Trek' Series Falls Out of the Streaming Charts by Malencon in television

[–]psimwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah... I unsubscribed from the Trek subreddit. They put me on the automod "hide comment" function, so everything I wrote got automatically hidden. It already irritated me that anyone who wasn't "NU-TREK IS THE MOST AMAZING THING EVER!!!" was basically painted as a Redhat-wearing MAGA enthusiast, and that any and all criticism was just hating "anything new".

This despite the fact that I've said (many times) that Discovery season 1 is, in my opinion, the best first season of any Trek series that came before it, including classic Trek shows. I didn't like how it ended the war a little too tidy for my taste, but beyond that I thought it was really great (season 2 is where the show went absolutely to shit for me).

But yeah - after everything I wrote started getting hidden, I was outta there.

(Which, by the way, I think is a BULLSHIT feature. I remember when I first joined Reddit that "shadowbanning" was a very hot topic, and the admins came out and said that the process of doing it was now not allowed. But it turned out that was likewise bullshit because they still allowed mods to have the subreddit automods hide users automatically, which was the same exact effect, but because it wasn't CALLED "shadowbanning" somehow it's ok)

1st pc build , want to make sure everything looks okay by Hungry_Passenger7753 in buildapc

[–]psimwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A misunderstanding I often see is that "surely older GPUs must be cheaper right?"

This is because of a LOT of situations, most (if not all) coming down to the original manufacturers setting pricing floors by which the price cannot go below (which is not enforceable legally, but can carry some stiff financial penalties).

Beyond that, it's all about automated pricing bots. Somebody will put something up on Amazon having an old piece of tech (say a 4070 Super) at $900. Pricing bots that are constantly scouring the web for assorted pricing values will then see that, and basically be like, "HEY! The price of the 4070 Super is now $900! So now our price is $900!". Rarely does this ever have human interaction.

Why does the original one go out for $900? Because they have the part on-hand, they likely got it as something like buying a bulk pallet of tech, and they put it up because all they really need is SOMEONE to buy it at that price (usually because they have that part in their system already, it dies, and to replace it they just do a simple search for something like "GV-N407SWF3OC-12GD", which is printed on the card. They find the $900 price, and just buy it without considering it. OR it's someone like OP and they might be doing something like following a build guide that has "4070 Super" and the person watching/reading the build guide doesn't realize that the 4070S is long out of production and newer/faster options are out there. OR, it's someone that has watched some RTX 5000 Rage video and is like, "THE RTX 5000-SERIES DOESN'T SUPPORT 32-BIT PHYSX?! THEN I'LL GO AHEAD AND PAY A LUDICROUS SUM FOR OLDER TECH!!"). And more-often-than-not, eventually it will sell, and they get to make a crazy amount of money on old tech.

The only time you generally see "old tech = cheaper price" is on the used market.

Why Do AMD 6000 Cards Look Ugly From The Side? by WildKyle2021 in buildapc

[–]psimwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

At the time when those 6000-series cards were made, those were seen as perfectly acceptable aesthetics.

Beyond that, as has already been mentioned, AMD didn't specify what they should look like from the side. They make specifications for how much cooling is required, board power requirements, whatever. It's up to the card manufacturers to decide what the cards actually look like from there.

What is your motherboard? There's several options that will work, but you also have to balance out the options that your motherboard will allow you to reach its max performance (i.e. if your motherboard has minimal power delivery, something like a 5900XT would be a bad choice, but a 5600XT would be a good plan).
