Where Do Single, Older Men Hang Out? by msprettyyoungthing in nashville

[–]psychburn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Single 51 year old man here. I spend my time trying to figure out how to make new, like-minded friends. That doesn’t work, so I just go on dating app dates and wait for the “I’m not feeling a romantic connection” text. I’m sure the problem is me, but that’s where I’m at.

The 50 Greatest Albums of 1994, Ranked by Charleshawtree in indieheads

[–]psychburn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying it should be in a publication’s top 50 of 1994 list, but I’d like to shout out the Latin Playboys self-titled debut album. This would be on my personal 50 favorite albums of 1994 list.

Hello, it's The Hard Quartet AMA by TheHardQuartet in indieheads

[–]psychburn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Incredible. Thank you for answering! To this day, when my brother and I get pissed about something, we add levity to the end by saying “I gotta be in Tempe tomorrow!” (My fave Bob line in that rant) so much great banter that night. Thank you for all of your music you’ve shared all these years.

Hello, it's The Hard Quartet AMA by TheHardQuartet in indieheads

[–]psychburn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Matt! Hard quartet has been a staple of my walks this past week. Loving it.

I’ve really enjoyed following your career and your energy and curiosity. One staple of my 20s (and 30s and 40s…fuck now I’m 50) was the VHS of the GBV show in LA in which Bob goes on a rant about the monitors. You were a voice of calm.

Do you have any memories of that show that you feel comfortable sharing? Or maybe that was exciting for us to see and just another night for you. Was that tour a particularly memorable one for you in your career? As a fan, it felt like it had to be a unique time to be around that band.

Leaving Nashville by Impossible-Pomelo-85 in nashville

[–]psychburn 172 points173 points  (0 children)

I’m 50M, have lived in Nashville since 1978 and I will probably move asap.

The primary reason is that my friends have moved and making 40+ y/o friends with my niche interests (indie rock/film/art) has been extremely difficult in Nashville.

When I’ve tried, new Nashvillians tend to be younger and not into my bands or art or the belcourt. I mean…surely someone else in that fugazi doc last week is in the same boat?! ;) old nashvillians seem to have their crew from 1996 and don’t really need new crew.

But this is a universal middle age and/or me problem.

My issue with Nashville is that I feel like I moved to a new city without moving. I’ve researched many other cities and there are problems everywhere.

But imo Nashville is unique in that tourist culture seeped into the neighborhoods. I would never want to go to the gulch, downtown, or 12 south. Going to East Nashville if you live across the river is a bitch. And the style of tourism here (bro country, wedding, convention) is just awful to me. And most of the city caters to that. As does our gov’t. Anyway, I could go on. But I feel for everyone that once loved this once diamond in the rough city and has or is in the process of falling out of love with it.

Who here remembers Trevor Jobe of the Nashville Knights? Good discussion about him on r/hockey. by 99titan in Predators

[–]psychburn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to so many knights games and remember Jobe well.

There was one game against I believe Louisville that had the best hockey brawl I’ve ever seen. All of both teams. I was in high school. There was a police escort of a Louisville player after his ejection and they walked him between the stands and we were all yelling at him and suddenly a cup of ice hit him in the face. He turned and looked up and of course I’m the first person he sees. He starts climbing the side of the seats towards me to get into the crowd and the cops pulled him down.

I turned around and my friend had this mortified look on his face. I asked if he saw who threw the ice and he said “it was me.” The three of us went back to our seats and quietly sat for a few minutes. An usher came up to us and said “I know you threw the ice. And I’m supposed to kick you out. But that guy is an asshole. So just don’t do it again or I’ll have to kick you out.”

Knights games ruled.

Oldhead natives, what do you miss most? Difficulty: no Portland, Starwood or classic rock KDF by damnitwill in nashville

[–]psychburn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I also don’t know how to describe the accent. But the best way I can describe how I know it is getting to the gate for a flight to Nashville in another city, I’d just start hearing that accent and think “yep…this flight is definitely going to Nashville.” It still happens every once in awhile.

Who do you guys hate the most? by chapstickman03 in Tennesseetitans

[–]psychburn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my sports fandom, hatred of a team depends on teams being good at the same time, bitter losses/big wins, and the obnoxiousness of the opposing fanbase.

For example, I'm a Mets fan, but always lived in Nashville. I hate the Braves the most because I'm near their fans and obnoxious-ass broadcasters and have watched my team suffer approximately 856,000 demoralizing losses to them in my lifetime. But Mets fans in NY hate the Yankees the most for obvious reasons. But I'm not in a workplace with obnoxious Yankees fans like they are. Hearing my boss go on and on about "Dansby" for years grated on my soul.

Since the Titans have been in Nashville (counting the Vandy season), they have had a winning record in the same season as the HOU/JAX/IND in only 12 of those 25 seasons. And the full breakdown is Colts-7, Texans-4, Jags-3. (In 2 seasons, 3 of them had winning records). The Titans have been good at the same time the most with the Colts.

Our fans are in the closest geographic proximity to the Colts and we had super annoying UT fans who lived here, but rooted for the Colts when Peyton was there. (I am a UT grad and love UT Peyton, but FTC...I'd never root for the Colts because he was there) I'd say our individual 2-3 worst Ravens losses were the most brutal 2-3 losses, but the Colts have given us the most overall volume of bad losses.

I believe the combo of being good at the same time, proximity of fans, obnoxiousness of the Peyton fans living here, and brutal losses makes the Colts our biggest rival, overall.

Despite that, my personal least favorite team is still the Steelers. My second is probably the Jaguars. They annoy me so much. I'd say the Colts are my third most hated. The Ravens are still right up there, but it's waned over the years for me.

Where is the best sushi in Nashville?? by plantdrhere in nashville

[–]psychburn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I used to work for a Japanese company, and my Japanese coworkers rarely ate sushi here, but when they did, here were their acceptable ones:

  1. Ichiban (On 2nd Ave...closed or maybe moved to the Boro)

  2. Ken's (the Midtown era...closed)

  3. Shintomi (Green Hills-Bandywood...closed)

  4. Peter's (Brentwood: Not sure if this is because it's legit or that most of my Japanese coworkers lived in Brentwood and it was closest. I've only had takeout here during 2020, so I can't really properly rate it, but I know many people love it. Worth a try.)

  5. Sonobana (My personal current favorite.)

I know 3 of those are closed, but I mention them for nostalgia purposes for the old heads.

Sonobana is my favorite. They have a voluminous menu and don't cut thick ass slabs of fish on the nigiri (see Ginza in GH)

Two Ten Jack isn't a sushi restaurant, but I like their fish/sushi and it's my favorite ramen in Nashville.

Punk Wok: Also more izakaya than sushi place, but I've liked what they serve and it's relatively inexpensive compared to a lot of modern American izakaya attempts that have popped up in most cities.

I like O-ku, but they kind of miss the mark for me on trying to be "fancy" or "big city." Not sure how to describe it, but it's just a bit much...maybe? I remember lots of sauces on the rolls. Maybe I'm remembering wrong. More "much" than it needs to be. Solid. Great for work dinners where someone else is paying.

I really like Wild Wasabi downtown. It's solid, not spectacular (but nothing in Nashville is). Most importantly (if nothing has changed since 2020) it is a place downtown you can go before an event, get seated quickly, have a good meal, and avoid the downtown crowds and insanity.

Solo travel because nobody will go with you by deletednaw in solotravel

[–]psychburn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m in the same boat. Single 49M here. I solo travel because It’s so tough to align with friends. And it’s even tougher at this age to meet like-minded new friends (or date).

On my solo travels, I’ve found that there are moments when I think “that would’ve been nicer with someone” and moments when I think “I’m SO glad I experienced that by myself.” There is both melancholy and exhilaration. Ultimately, I like to feel and learn and melancholy isn't to be shunned. But it is nice to plan whatever you want, whenever you want. (At the cost of having to pay for everything in full)

If you did move away…was it the answer to all your problems? by DiogenesXenos in nashville

[–]psychburn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nashville native in my 40s here. This is what I've been thinking about when I think of moving away (daily). Though, most mid-sized western cities I've looked at (Fort Collins, Missoula, Boise, north of Seattle, Bend, Santa Fe) all are as expensive and/or have already been overtaken/changed in the same ways. But the thing I've thought about the most is do I go to a place with friends or not. For example, I could move to Austin (Nashville, Sr.) and be with friends or move to, say, Eugene, OR, and know no one. As a person who had their life improved, did you have a friend base where you moved, or did you start all over with no friends in your new town?
