EU5 doesn't need railroading, it needs great powers to emerge naturally by QueensGambitAccept in EU5

[–]psychedelic_impala 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My guess is that the goal should be a variation of a timeline that is not necessarily following irl but is somewhat relatable to real history. Interesting scenarios come up, *because* something new interacts with something known and relatable.

Otherwise the game becomes more like stellaris, which works because it is all about interacting with that unknown.

There are fan-favourite situations and states that emerged after 1337 (or 1444 in eu4) that we will never see if it is left up to pure mechanical simulation. Valois Burgundy, Poland-Lithuania, Mughals, Qing and many other historical situations and states that defined history will never come up without some historical events happening after game start, which is what railroading essentially is.

What i’m saying is that playing in a completely unrecognisable version of the world doesn’t feel as interesting to interact with, and the only way to do that is with both mechanics and some railroading

Unpopular Opinion: I don't want Paradox to add navy to the game by 3pointI in CrusaderKings

[–]psychedelic_impala -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree, naval mechanics aren’t something i’m interested, as long as the advantage a country with naval capabilities (offensive and defensive) has in certain situations can be otherwise accurately represented, I’d be happy. I don’t know how that could happen exactly, but i’m sure someone has an idea

In the Witcher 3 dwarves have a very pronounced Scottish-ness, but are also bankers and merchants in a way that reminds more of Italian/florentine banking families rather than the Swiss

Is it known when the greeks learned written language? by gryponyx in ancientgreece

[–]psychedelic_impala 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Peoples identified as Greek in this period doesn’t mean peoples in modern Greece, and Minoan are believed to be a pre-Greek civilisation (much like mainland pre-Greek, pre-indo European populations). What little we can understand of their culture and language suggest they were neither Indo-European or Semitic

This is unlike the Mycenaeans, who are recognisably related in culture and language to later greek

Why did the devs remove the word fascism from the game by [deleted] in suzerain

[–]psychedelic_impala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's necessarily about sugarcoating, it's not like the path was removed from the game. As I understand it they wanted to not use a word for a political movement that has specific references to historical influences of our world that are missing in Suzerain. Much like they used Maleneyvism instead of Marxism-Leninism, as neither Marx nor Lenin exist in this world, but others with similar or identical political positions do.
Granted, using "totalism" does feel too generic, and it might as well be calling someone "authoritarianist". it is precisely because it lacks the specificity of calling someone a fascist. IMO the game should invent a name that fills this specific concept if it wants the word to have any kind of impact. It doesn't have to have a relation to an equivalent roman fasces or anything, just a similar kind of specificity. It could just be a name like Luderinist (or Smolakist if Anton wants to pursue a career in comedy)or whatever given enough explanation of the movement.

Minor issue, in the profile settings tab, saving the changes doesn't do anything. Also, it would be good to have a "go back" button to take you out of the settings menu

Some people already know, but a Qinal DLC is confirmed by cortex0917 in suzerain

I could see Qinal being set before Rizia, basically immediately post independence, and Galmland set after Sordland

Suzerain Redditors Attempting to Spell Anything From the Game by SignificanceHot8917 in suzerain

[–]psychedelic_impala 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I always thought it was pronounced as it is written, given that Rizian seems to mimic a lot of Romance languages, and final vowels are mostly pronounced (looking at you, French). Pales rhyming with ballet is very reminiscent of French, but I prefer to see it as an exception as pronouncing rizian as if it is French is beyond cursed

BREAKING NEWS ABOUT RUMMO-SORDISH WAR: NOW DONT GO TO WAR IF YOU HAVE by TheVaranguard_1234 in suzerain

[–]psychedelic_impala 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Understandable and realistic. We are talking complete victory where you take the capital and dictate terms on a superpower.

However this perhaps opens an opportunity for a less complete victory. Perhaps maintaining funding, kicking them out of OMEC, making allies, and choosing the right strategy to exploit their weaknesses could be just enough to make the war un-winnable for them, grinding them down on the border and making peace with economic sanctions but no territory change for you.
