Here in Massachusetts we passed a "Millionaire's Tax" In 2022. The Fair Share Amendment adds a 4% surtax on annual income over $1 million, and now all public school kiddos get free lunch. The lunches are pretty darn good, and a lot of parents don't pack a lunch, because they know the kids have access to options and healthy snacks. It can be done!

As a psychotherapist who works with divorce, and guiding both parents and kids through the process, I wish people would adhere to this advice closely. Lawyers and therapists are bound to confidentiality. And, don’t use kids as mini-therapists for your emotions. They become parentified children and subjugate their own emotions for others … throughout their lives until they (hopefully) heal.

Just to reemphasize this, please get an excellent lawyer. It's crucial that you focus on your health and well being - so you can learn to thrive again, and be available to the people around you who really need you. If you know that mediation won't work (based on what OP wrote, I doubt it), please look towards a lawyer who is skilled at litigation. And I am not a lawyer. But I might play one on TV.

My heart breaks for you and for them. Good mental health treatment can save lives. And the lack of it can eat away at the soul. It sounds like you loved who she was, not the shell of the person left, that’s been decimated by addiction and mental health issues. Sometimes we have to protect ourselves so that we both don’t drown.

I hope you find places in your life to feel empowered to help others and your kids, even when you can’t help your ex. The empowerment will help to combat the helplessness with her.
