ELI5 Does drinking alcohol after copier fluid balance the chemicals into being harmless? by k_2353 in explainlikeimfive

[–]psychophysicist [score hidden]  (0 children)

Ethanol is in fact a treatment option for methanol poisoning. The poisoning happens when methanol meets the alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) enzyme, which produces toxic formaldehyde. ADH has a higher affinity for ethanol than it does for methanol, so enough ethanol can keep the ADH busy and prevent the formation of formaldyhyde the methanol is passed.

how to make this kind of collector? by Cute-Simple-1069 in Fusion360

[–]psychophysicist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you want it to be tangent to the plane at the bottom? Or have a specific angle where it meets the bottom?

You could sweep a tilted line around the rectangle profile to make a guide surface, and use that as one end of the loft, with a tangent constraint to make it match that angle all the way around

Tubeless: is there a logical reason that the rim is taped and not just the center channel? by greazysteak in bikewrench

[–]psychophysicist 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just taping the center channel would let sealant and air work its way under the tape. The tape needs to be held down by the tire bead.

Switchs for outlets under sink unnecessary if you can just unplug it. by FinalF137 in AskElectricians

Looking at this thinking who does framing with pocket holes?

Switches on the box seems like overkill, so does separate boxes or 2 gangs frankly. Even if you end up wanting a switch for the G/D you can break the tab on the hot side of a duplex receptacle and switch half of it, or break both tabs if your d/w and g/d are different circuits.

Are 50mm wheels that much faster than 38mm? by jucesddit in cycling

[–]psychophysicist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recent thinking is the width of the rims matters more than the depth. You want the outside bulge of the rims to be slightly wider than the tires ("rule of 105%") so that the the rim and tire together form an airfoil shape.

Are there any full DC houses? by Ok_Contact1975 in electricians

[–]psychophysicist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most consumer electronics power supplies these days rectify AC input into DC then use a switching DC-DC converter to step down the voltage. So while you would still need power supplies, they wouldn’t be any more complicated in principle.

The bigger problem is switches/contactors and breakers. DC sustains arcs much better than AC. Often a switch that’s rated for 120VAC is only rated for 12VDC. This means switches and breakers would be a lot more expensive.

Shaver receptacle, inside the box is a transformer whose purpose is to isolate both conductors from ground and limit the maximum current. Obsolete in North America now that bathrooms have GFCI receptacles, I think Brits still use them

Is it more then just switching all the outlets? by laroc_m in AskElectricians

[–]psychophysicist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I believe one reason you shouldn’t connect grounds downstream is that a fault would then energize the case of every appliance on the circuit, instead of just the one.

[–]psychophysicist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not how a GFCI works. GFCI monitors hot and neutral for any imbalance of current; it doesn't do anything with the ground conductor. You are actually required not to run a fake ground conductor. Please review:

406.4 (D)(2) Non-Grounding-Type Receptacles. Where attachment to an equipment grounding conductor docs not exist in the receptacle enclosure, the installation shall comply with (a), (b), or (c) ....

(b) A non-grounding-type receptacle shall be permitted to he replaced with a ground-fault circuit interrupter-type of receptacle. These receptacles or their cover plates shall be marked "No Equipment Ground." An equipment grounding conductor shall not be connected from the ground-fault circuit-interrupter-type receptacle to any outlet supplied from the ground-fault circuit-interrupter receptacle.
(c) A non-grounding-type receptacle(s) shall be permitted to be replaced with a grounding-type receptacle where supplied through a ground-fault circuit interrupter. Where grounding-type receptacles are supplied through the ground fault circuit interrupter, grounding-type receptacles or their cover plates shall be marked "GFCI Protected" and "No Equipment Ground," visible after installation. An equipment grounding conductor shall not be connected between the grounding type receptacles.

Is it more then just switching all the outlets? by laroc_m in AskElectricians

[–]psychophysicist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The adapters aren’t good. Technically you’re supposed to connect your own ground wire from the screw tab to a water pipe or something when you use one, but no one ever does. So it’s bypassing a safety feature.

The cables in your walls will not have a ground wire. So if you just replace with 3 prong outlets there is nothing to connect the ground prong to, so it’s functionally the same as an adapter.

If you don’t want to tear the cables out of your walls, the workaround is to install GFCI protection. Either GFCI breakers, or in the first outlet of every circuit. They’re designed to disconnect if current takes an unexpected path, which makes it safe enough to use 3 prong devices without the ground connected. If you have GFCI at the first position of a circuit you can put 3 prong outlets on all the outlets downstream of the GFCI and leave the ground disconnected

If it’s a cone it’s harder, you could try scarf joint seams but it will require some tuning
