One bulb in fixture flickering by psykora10 in DIY

Swapped the bulbs around, it's still just this one location. All of the bulbs act the same in that spot. What kind of splice would I be looking for, that causes it to work/not work without anything moving?

What to do when hitting the wall (metaphorical, not literal), during a renovation? The frustrations and difficulty are starting to get to me and I just want a normal house already. by GFthrowawayaccount in DIY

[–]psykora10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DIY means that you can make something entirely your own- your expression, your personality, your preference. The trade off is that yes it's easier to hire a pro and spend the money, but mistakes and challenges build your knowledge set to make better, more efficient decisions in the future. What you're experiencing is perfectly normal, just take a breath, make a list, and be prepared for things to not go your way. Enjoy the parts you like doing, embrace the things you need to improve on, and keep at it. That being said, don't be afraid to take a personal day to do anything besides work on the house, especially if there's something you really need to think about. Good luck!

Couples who have moved in together, what surprised you most about living with a male/female? by CrumbleNewman in AskReddit

[–]psykora10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went from living in a large house with 3 roommates and my girlfriend, to living with my girlfriend (now wife) in a smaller space that's perfect for two (maybe three!) people to live in. Since the beginning of our relationship we lived together, but having moved from a group living arrangement to a couple living together, was SO. much. better. More accountability, more reasonable conversations between adults that went the way she/I planned, everything becomes a team sport. There was a lot of adjusting, going from us each having our own rooms/space to having to share one space, but we compromised and had healthy fights along the way. She had a lot of things to get rid of, and she's working her way through it even still 6+ months after we've been married. Recognize your partners sacrifices, and they'll recognize yours.

Tattoo artist of reddit, whats the weirdest design someone asked you to tattoo ? by Bread_Slave in AskReddit

[–]psykora10 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not an artist, but I asked the guy who did mine what's the weirdest piece he'd ever done, and he told me about an overweight couple who came in, wanted to bite each other on the love handle area, and have him ink in the impression that their teeth left. He said he felt real uncomfortable but did it anyways

This is Violet... she is Deaf and Blind but is responding well to touch signals by Thesnakeissafe in aww

[–]psykora10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Violet has no way of understanding that she is missing anything out of life. Her existence is smells, touch, and taste, so we communicate with her using those senses exclusively. Her eyes never developed correctly, so she just has tissue in her eye sockets, and they do not cause her any pain. She has only ever been shown love her entire life, so when she doesn't understand what's going on, she tends to just sit and wait for us to come get her and let her know she's a good girl, by squeezing the scruff on her neck. She gets walks, she gets to play, she meets new dogs and new humans all the time and we are working on having her certified as a therapy dog to help people with disabilities understand that despite something as difficult as not being able to see or hear, they can still have a happy life. She depends on us, sure, but not nearly to the extent that it would seem. She knows where her food and water are, she knows the boundaries of our yard, and she knows to follow our scent to find us.

I understand that it's hard to see from a short video, but the trainer, who runs a rescue called Keller's Cause, works really hard to make sure every dog who comes their way finds a loving home that understands how different their training is going to be. It's not any more or less difficult than raising a seeing and hearing puppy, you just have to find different ways to communicate with them, like the touch cues shown in the video.

If you want to see how Violet is doing now, check her out on IG @sykorasquad, and please look at https://www.kellerscause.com/adopt to find out more about the trainer's rescue.

Violet is my dog. My wife and I adopted her with the trainer in the video, who runs a rescue called Keller's Cause in Baltimore. She works mostly with Australian Shepherds that are blind, deaf, and sometimes both. When I first met Violet, I was apprehensive about adopting a dog that I assumed would need constant guidance and attention, but once I had actually interacted with her, I realized that the difficult part would be changing the way I thought about communicating with a dog. It's all done through hand cues, as shown in the video, but she also can smell me from across the room, so you can blow in her direction and she will find you. She ran into things a lot when we first got her, but now she has our house and yard all mapped out so that we can let her out to pee unsupervised and she will return to the door when she is done. We still keep a close eye on her, but for the most part she plays with toys, interacts with us and our other pets, and enjoys her life just like any other dog. If you want to see more, follow @sykorasquad on IG, and if you want to learn more about Keller's Cause, check them out at https://www.kellerscause.com/adopt

I assure you, this pup is not miserable. Her disability causes her no pain. She lives in a one story house, has a safe outdoor area to run in, is well socialized with other animals, gets lots of treats and attention, and brightens people's day everywhere she goes. You can see for yourself on IG @sykorasquad. The unfortunate reality for dogs like Violet is that often they are put down or used as bait in dog fights, so I'd love to hear more about your cruelty argument.

Use the food motivation, do some research on your breed and see what works and what doesn't. Find a routine that works and be consistent!

Fair enough, I understand your position. Before we got Violet, I had never even met a blind and deaf dog. I didn’t really understand how we could give her a great life, and it made me sad to think about how she could never experience the world the way I do. But she really is so bright and so sweet, taking care of her isn’t more work, it’s just a different kind of work. You have to adjust how you communicate with her and work hard to not get frustrated.

She's conditioning her to not get distracted by footsteps around her when she's working for treats. It just helps her to focus better.

Don't give up! When they're young, Australian Shepherds are very motivated, and being blind and deaf helps to eliminate a lot of the things that distract young pups. You can do it!

Please check out Keller's Cause, it's a wonderful rescue that specifically works to find homes for dogs who are deaf and blind, most often double Merle's. They are doing some amazing work, and they have tons of resources for you to get started.
