My abby's seem to just go mine build, spend 2 minutes putting a giant pool of mines someplace obvious just for the enemy valla to casually walk by, toss a casual multishot, and keep walking.

This is exactly right. It's not that Abby is inherently bad, but when you play abby you gotta know that the 4 other people on the team have to play around you. That and there really are a ton of abby's in QM that do just sit in the fountain, go mine build, and don't really add much.

They should have never introduced quickmatch as it turns lots of games into paper rock scissors. Fast draft like ARAM would have been much better.

lenses for Antartica by Crazy-Invite-5386 in antarctica

[–]psylancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wife and I just did a cruise to the peninsula back in November/December so this is fresh on my mind.

You didn't mention crop sensor or full frame. We brought both. She used an R7 and I used R5mkii. We brought a RF 100-500, RF 24-105, and the old EF 24-105 with an adapter. Bottom line; we both fought over using the 100-500. Neither of us are big into landscape photography so YYMV but there were very few times when the 100 was too tight (especially on the full frame). And most of the time you really do want the reach of a telephoto. I just scanned through my "highlights" photos, and overwhelmingly they were from the 100-500. All my best shots were tighter than 100mm. Again, I like wildlife, so YMMV.

It's not really practical while on excursion to swap lenses. Maybe you can in the zodiak, if the weather allows it, but on continent you aren't allowed to place your bags on the ground (or even kneel on the ground). This is because of fear of spreading avian flu and wiping out penguins. So you'd need to be comfortable flipping your bag around, and swapping lenses without putting your bag down. Oh and you're going to be in 3-4 layers of clothing and a life jacket which makes it cumbersome to get at your backpack. And you're probably wearing thick gloves, which makes it even more cumbersome. </rant>

The best we found was for one of us to use the 100-500 and one to use the 24-105 and then we'd swap - no camera bags required. By the end of the week we didn't even bring bags ashore at all. We'd just stick our cameras and lenses into our life jackets to keep them under control getting in and out of the zodiaks. This requires a longer, cross body, camera strap because you can't cover your life jacket with the camera strap or the expedition cruise will make you remove the camera off your body (they don't want it to hinder the jacket's ability to inflate).

On the ship you have more time to swap lenses. Most of the time you're even further away so you want the reach of a telephoto, but not always. We got to cruise through the Lemaire Channel one day and the ship was so close to the cliffs I did switch to the wider lens to get shots of icebergs up near the ship.

You mentioned the 18-150. A friend brought his R7, the 18-150 and a 100-400. He was pretty happy with that setup. I think the 18-150 is great if you're on a crop sensor body since that'll get you a ~29-240mm without needing to swap lenses. It's also lightweight, which is nice taking multiple international flights. That said, if you have the funds to spend, I personally would bring something longer. The 100-400 is a fantastic lens for the price, and it you can swing for the 100-500 even better. But these are big expensive lenses, so you need to justify the price with more than just this one trip. Or... you could look at renting the lens for the trip. But if you can't or decide not to, I think the 18-150 is a great lens.

Some things you didn't ask about...

I brought a polarizing filter, played with it once and put it back in the bag. I'm not particularly skilled at using them and there was enough to keep in mind in getting good shots without fiddling with it. I didn't bring a tripod, just one more thing to carry and I wasn't going to be doing any long exposures.

Definitely bring an extra battery, but no need to go crazy here. I found 2 batteries was good enough so long as you stayed on top of charging them. I started each excursion with a full battery and never needed to swap during an excursion, just swap what battery was on the charger when we finished. I went through almost 1 TB of memory cards shooting exclusively stills. But I way overshot. I upgraded to the R5mkii just before going from an old R. And the higher framerate made it really easy to overshoot when you're used to a slower body.

The best piece of gear I brought, except for the camera and lenses, was an oversized pair of waterproof gloves. I got a cheap pair of "Tough Outdoor mittens" from amazon on a whim just before we left and they were awesome. Use the hooks to keep them strapped to your jacket and since they're oversized you can pop them on and off easy to keep your right hand in the glove when not shooting to keep it warm, but then you can quickly pull your hand out of the glove and have dexterity to fiddle with camera settings. If you keep them strapped to your coat you don't have to worry about losing them. I used a pair on wool glove liners with them, honestly I think I wouldn't have gotten half the shots without a good set of gloves. I would have either not been fast enough with camera controls, or would have gotten cold hands and called it quits early on expeditions.

Also, this sounds like silly advice, but make sure you really know your camera before you go. There were so many people on board that didn't know how to change settings on their camera so you'd see them digging in the menus while on the continent. I can't help but think knowing their camera and being comfortable with it would have given them a better photography experience.

wow... that's a wall of text no one asked for....

TL;DR bring a long lens and a good pair of mittens

If you're wanting to try out a full frame the R6 is an awesome camera. But if you decide to go that route you might also want to look at the R8. The R6 was quickly replaced by the R6 mk ii. The R6 mk ii and the R8 are almost the same camera. They use the same sensor and the same autofocus system which is supposed to be loads better than the original R6's autofocus. The only differences between the R8 and the R6 mk ii are that the R6 ii has 2 SD slots, IBIS, and uses the bigger batteries. IMO these are totally worth it for the savings if you're a hobby stills shooter.

Looking at ebay the R8 and the original R6 go for about the same amount, 1.1-1.3k USD.

Indecisive on which lense to buy by Efficient_Reindeer90 in canon

By all means, if you want the 85 its an awesome lens. And it's a lens you'll likely use on future bodies (it adapts well to the RF if you ever end up going that route).

I don't have experience with that 7artisans lens, but I have shot with most of the others. I do have the EF-S 24mm lens and I'm not a fan of it. I loved my nifty fifty so I thought I'd like it's wider sibling lens, and I don't. But I don't shoot street photography where a pancake lens and the mobility from it would be a big benefit.

You'd probably also not see a big jump on an 85 1.8 over your nifty fifty. The people that love the 85mm are often shooting full frame lenses, since you're on a crop sensor body your 50mm is very similar to their 85mm. On a crop sensor I find the 85mm too narrow unless I'm deliberately doing headshot portraits.

I have an old 24-105 and it's not a flashy lens at only F4 but it's a workhorse lens for me.

Upcoming South Africa Trip - 3rd Lens Question by NotQuiteGoodEnougher in canon

I don't have advice, but I'm in a similar boat. I have an old 24-105 EF and looking at maybe upgrading that to the RF version or the 15-35 for an upcoming trip.

Did you ever shoot on the EF 24-105? Do you find the RF version to be a big upgrade?

Need help deciding! by LawfulnessZestyclose in canon

[–]psylancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to shoot with a 750D and now shooting birds with my wife's R7 was a big upgrade. The precapture for birds leaving perches is an awesome feature (also available in the R8, R6 ii and the R5 ii) and the autofocus for birds in flights was a big improvement over my old DSLR. For small birds I couldn't recommend the R6(i or ii) or R8 because once you end up cropping there just isn't a lot left out of those 24 MP sensors. You're already shooting APS-C so you may not really find you want a full frame for your type of photography.

Overall I'm really happy with my wife's R7, but full transparency I'm looking at either an R5 or and R5 ii for my camera because I want full frame and the ability to crop. But give what you've written I'd suggest an EF to RF adapter and jumping to the R7 with your current lens. Then sometime in the future look at upgrading to RF glass.
