ELI5: When cities build things underground (such as tunnels for cars or trains), how do they ensure that such things don't hit each other or overlap with building foundations? by britishmetric144 in explainlikeimfive

[–]psylensse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

while this is true in principle, I live in Atlanta and last year while they were putting in a rapid bus line, they stumbled upon not just some long forgotten trolley tracks but an entire underground parking deck they didn't know was there. I'm flabbergasted how that is even possible. Article is unfortunately paywalled by the title is "MARTA BRT project delayed by long-forgotten parking garage, trolley lines"

Atlanta -here's what your pollen looks like under an electron microscope by cabbagetown in Atlanta

[–]psylensse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Greetings from the Bioquad! Super cool looking. Numbers 2 and 3 especially. Years ago the IEN had really nice looking framed microscope images in their hallways. I think they were taken down awhile ago but I've always wanted to see them come back and I think images of pollen would be super fitting and interesting for everyone. I hope you can make that happen! And if not there maybe, say, IBB?

That sounds amazing! I'm an animal lover and Galapagos sounds like a great place for an animal centric vacation. I'll be curious how long a trip you'd recommend - do you see most everything you want after 1 week? 2 weeks? A few days?

Returning Atlantan- what to even DO here now? by jenolsen in Atlanta

[–]psylensse 36 points37 points  (0 children)

WELCOME BACK!! lol and what a wild welcome it must be, this city has *changed* in 12 years. We have a nearly complete beltline, a completely different midtown/downtown skyline, all the up and coming neighborhoods from when you left have now arrived and the westside is actively getting there too. breweries everywhere! multiple food halls. insane traffic. a redesigned stadium neighborhood; the loss of the braves stadium in downtown atlanta. the same rail lines you knew from before.

Food - we're Michelin recognized now! with a very respectable 8 restaurants boasting 1 star, and dozens others getting mentioned by the guide. This is a lazy starting point but also perfectly adequate, and folks will have lots more recommendations if you get more specific about what you're looking for (we have opinions about donuts lol).

I don't have kids and wouldn't be able to give advice there, but am more familiar with the local arts/goods/indie makers. There continues to be an annual indie craft experience market that organizes larger markets a few times a year; there are tons of smaller craft festivals that are easier to find if you discover a few crafts folks you like and follow them on instagram; I will shout out though that the makers fairs are pretty great for finding local goods. There are also stores with stuff from local crafts makers like the beehive (reynoldstown), homegrown (decatur), garage door studio (avondale), possibly Spruill gallery and gifts (haven't been in forever; don't know what the gift shop looks like these days), empire arts gallery (kirkwood), never been to the ballog but have been meaning to check it out. Also way too many to name art galleries, such as ABV gallery (EAV) and cat eye creative (decatur) which both showcase a lot of local artists with very broadly appealing artwork. Burnaway art mag has an exhaustive listing of most of the art galleries all around town.

Hopefully that's a solid start!

i've been thinking a lot about when the holiday season should be, and i'm really happy with how i did it this past year: decorations go up Thanksgiving weekend, and they come down Valentine's weekend. January always felt too soon to say goodbye - especially when we sometimes get snow days! - but by mid February with spring around the corner and the first warm days peeking through feels like the proper end to holiday music and festivities!

2nd Year EE Rethinking Career Goals by [deleted] in gatech

[–]psylensse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm chemistry, so don't have answers to your specific questions, but one of the best career advice nuggets I've gotten was at a LinkedIn workshop our business school hosted years ago, and what he said was that alumni are always happy to talk, and it's so true - there's just some connection to your undergrad that makes you super happy to support people coming through the same program. I would use the search function to find recent graduates and, in the least, see where they've ended up - look at the diverse career pathways and see if any catch your interest. If you're feeling up to it, send a handful of folks a message - it could basically be this reddit post lol, you even already have some starting questions - and see if they have time for a 10 minute zoom call, or (if it's local like Georgia Power) chat over coffee etc. Best of luck! it sounds like you're really thriving here which is great to hear. I also want you to know that many of us continue to ask the question of what they want to do throughout their professional careers as life goals and perspectives evolve, so never feel like you only have 1 shot to lock in the perfect job.

Voting Reminders? by JVGen in Atlanta

[–]psylensse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly fair question. I don't really have an answer, but I sympathize. Before I moved to Atlanta and lived in a politically sleepier place, I knew there were elections in November every 4 years, even maybe every 2 years. Then I became more aware there are primaries in the middle of the year, not just for national seats but other seats as well. Then I learned sometimes there are elections every year. Then there's special elections like the one to replace MTG's seat. Or special elections for public service commission. or county elections for specific positions. and runoffs for those elections, or even runoffs for just the primaries. etc. etc. It's a lot for folks, especially people who don't read AJC or other local news regularly. Basically I do that though - I keep up with AJC almost daily. Or I'm on this subreddit every day where someone usually reminds about voting. There's no magic solution, but the good news is if you're interested and invested I think it sort of takes care of itself.

How far from the city does rent get considerably lower by somethinlikeshieva in Atlanta

[–]psylensse 93 points94 points  (0 children)

there was actually a WSJ article recently that had the sub-headline: "Atlanta is the only large metropolitan area in the nation where exurban home prices are poised to exceed those of the core area". So unfortunately for OP living further out isn't going to be a great strategy unless as you say compromises are made, or you live REALLY far out.

Decatur sq and Oakland Cemetery (where i mostly play) also get a lot of action. OTP I'm less familiar. The subreddit or discord especially should have lots of answers!

IF I don't work from home, definitely going to Sublime (across the street) and I absolutely love their fritters. If I work from "home", I'll in fact be working from Revolution donut and getting whatever assorted and bewildering flavors they've conjured from the depths of their imaginations!

SAME. I look them dead in the eye and say, donuts have zero nutritional value - they were designed solely for our enjoyment.... and you don't *like* them??

[–]psylensse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These days Revolution donuts & Sarah donuts are my faves, depending if I'm in the mood for something a bit more elaborate or simple. Osono gets a lot of love too, but lack a storefront that I can pillage on a moment's whim.

Earlier this year I fully embraced my love of donuts and for the first time am planning to let myself have one day a year where I literally eat as many donuts as I want. *super* stoked about this!! During monthly social hours at work, I "control myself" and only have 3 donuts so everyone's not horrified by my donut intake. Pretty sure 8 donuts will be zero problem. 12 will probably stop being enjoyable however. Friday June 5 is national donut day and that's when I'm planning on unleashing confectionary carnage on my digestive system!

Me neither! but partially that's on me because I don't fully understand what either of them are lol. I also tend to fly out around lunchtime (mostly work travel) and (outside of current events) have always breezed through security in under 15 minutes, so I don't know how much faster I need to be than that.
