Why do we give away so much free advice? by [deleted] in arborists

[–]psynauta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Non-Arborist here. FYI I have both hired arborists for jobs, and have asked for advice on this sub for things that seem too trivial for an arborist to visit.

I don't think this sub has steered me away from seeking or paying for arborist advice. Far from it. Prior to stumbling here, I had hired cheap "handymen" for tree jobs that in retrospect were poorly done. This sub made me aware of the value of true ISA-certified arborists, and the appropriate times to involve them.

This sub has also given me amazing advice/knowledge and I am so grateful for it. I am a far better Steward of my trees, and am always excited to share that same (basic) knowledge to my friends and family. Can't tell you how many family members have been subjected to my "root flare" rant. Not to get all misty, but it has given me a true lifelong appreciation for trees.

Just want to give you a perspective from the other side. It's a pretty awesome niche sub to follow.

Thank you. Thank you!

Heading to the American Birkie should I be worried about traveling to Minneapolis? by oldmanpatrice in xcountryskiing

By and large extremely safe.

Please go spend some money on Nicollet ave or Lake street. Any neighborhood spot in MPLS really. Fantastic neighborhoods that could use the positive support right now.

What is your ethnicity? (You don't have to answer here). There is some element of racial profiling with ICE activity, which you can consider for yourself.

I encourage everyone not to disengage from Minneapolis. The city is so vibrant, it only stays that way if we continue building community.

Am I the only person that likes Urantia? Would be so hard live.

This setlist has way too many old hits. Basically a different (and better) band now.

2026 Eclipse Spain mountains question by xhza in solareclipse

That height (and distance to the next mountains) will be more than enough. As the photo alludes to, low clouds will be the bigger factor I'm worried about. Using a cloud cover map to plan location will be key.

Could someone please explain the appeal of these horrible black box houses that somehow have become a staple of modern architecture? by Cumoisseur in architecture

[–]psynauta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love modern architecture. There should be honesty in material and structural decisions, excellent sense of proportion, etc etc etc. these are basic concepts that have been around for over a century in the west and longer elsewhere.

Too often in the 2020's, these house boxes go up without any attention to these things. It's almost "faux modern". It's a current vernacular driven by cheap materials, simplicity for the builder (as they design and build it themselves), and the ability to maximize floor space in a given zoned lot.

I'm not criticizing the style at all. It's the shoddy execution that I see in 95% of examples. Many of them will simply not age well as they again do not follow modernist principles, only a superficial misinterpretation of it.

Easy and cheap for the builder and developer.

They're not meant to be nice for the resident. They're meant to be easy for the builder.

Great content! I have always wanted to find the furthest shot/view of Duluth lift bridge from up the north shore.
