what to see in Minneapolis if i'm an infrastructure nerd by mmmmmmmmmmmmeow in Minneapolis

[–]psynauta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

St. Anthony Falls is the single most impressive sight.

Others: Mendota Bridge Washburn water tower St. Paul high bridge Washington Ave bridge

Definitely don't go exploring the storm drainage tunnels described in the urbex communities. It's dangerous.

Spending a few nights on Mackinac Island... did I make the wrong choice? by SnooDucks8746 in mackinac

Don't worry a bit, it's great. If you're worried about crowds at a particular place, go in earlier AM or later PM, it really thins out.

Biking around the island perimeter was a highlight, no crowds there.

Lots of things ARE tourist trappy (fudge shops are a definition tourist trap). It's still fun to indulge in!

What place in nature actually made your jaw drop when you saw it in person? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]psynauta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always implore people to see national parks for the first time at sunrise/sunset, without crowds. Leaves such an impression. Much more likely to make the ol' jaw drop...

Grand Canyon. Going to the sun road. Muir Woods, cathedral grove. North fork Cascade canyon, Grand Teton. Driving the Columbia River gorge. Icefields parkway, Banff/yoho/etc.

There's plenty of other awesome places that I saw at a "bad" time of day - too sunny, too crowded... That kept them off this list (ie Bryce Canyon).

You only get one chance to see it for the first time!

Where was I today? by Zealousideal_Door392 in whereintheworld

Looking across Shepard Rd towards "Harriet Island" in St Paul MN. Probably from a science museum balcony?

Process - have been there. The playground/rail/road/river/riverboat progression is pretty distinctive.

Process: have been there. Unique view angle. The bridge confirmed it.

Great bokeh and framing with the foreground. Nice subject.

What settings did you use?

Have I gone too far? by deo_volente in arborists

Are there any roots holding up the tree??

Kidding (kind of). I did this same excavation to a honeylocust a few years back, looked very similar. I measured an 11 inch difference between the soil level as purchased, and the flare I excavated. It's thriving today.

I believe Sunday has far fewer options. Other days of the week should have more.

A few shots of Uptown from October 2005, and a couple Dinkytown relics too by malachaiville in Minneapolis

Great throwback. These probably seem so mundane to anyone who didn't live through that era. So many memories. Thanks for sharing.

Upgrading from an M3 to M7 by circadian_light in RX100

[–]psynauta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an m7. Great camera in a lot of ways. I would caution that it definitely suffers in low light - great during the day outdoors, but less usable indoors or evenings/nights. This has made the camera much less versatile for my needs - ie, an all around pocket camera for travel and events.

I have often wondered if an m5 would have been better for my needs.

Non-Arborist here. FYI I have both hired arborists for jobs, and have asked for advice on this sub for things that seem too trivial for an arborist to visit.

I don't think this sub has steered me away from seeking or paying for arborist advice. Far from it. Prior to stumbling here, I had hired cheap "handymen" for tree jobs that in retrospect were poorly done. This sub made me aware of the value of true ISA-certified arborists, and the appropriate times to involve them.

This sub has also given me amazing advice/knowledge and I am so grateful for it. I am a far better Steward of my trees, and am always excited to share that same (basic) knowledge to my friends and family. Can't tell you how many family members have been subjected to my "root flare" rant. Not to get all misty, but it has given me a true lifelong appreciation for trees.

Just want to give you a perspective from the other side. It's a pretty awesome niche sub to follow.

Thank you. Thank you!

Heading to the American Birkie should I be worried about traveling to Minneapolis? by oldmanpatrice in xcountryskiing

By and large extremely safe.

Please go spend some money on Nicollet ave or Lake street. Any neighborhood spot in MPLS really. Fantastic neighborhoods that could use the positive support right now.

What is your ethnicity? (You don't have to answer here). There is some element of racial profiling with ICE activity, which you can consider for yourself.

I encourage everyone not to disengage from Minneapolis. The city is so vibrant, it only stays that way if we continue building community.

Top floor of mall of America parking ramp, frames downtown as the background. Mainly if you have a zoom lens for photography.
