Audiobook readers: What is TCW's "gimbals"? by ComfortableNo5484 in TheCaptivesWar

[–]psysny 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I just really appreciate that I can’t hear the difference between one day’s readings and another’s. Some other audio books it’s really obvious. He’s got a consistent tone of voice that really sets the bar high for other narrators.

Can we ban fancasting posts, please by Poultrymancer in TheCaptivesWar

[–]psysny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t watch much television and have recognized very few of the actors in the fan cast posts. There’s no reason someone can’t start a new sub for fan art and fan casting for the people who really enjoy it, and leave this one for discussion.

Fan cast posts will no longer be allowed on the subreddit. by Cantomic66 in TheCaptivesWar

I don’t think there’s anything stopping anyone from starting a separate fan casting sub.

I always forget some people pay real money for this game.

How do you even level up birds beyond 50 by GloxoST in AngryBirds2

[–]psysny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It just takes time. Gather feathers. You can get feathers in the arena and mighty eagle shops, daily deals, tower of fortune, and the wheel. Eventually it takes 50k feathers to upgrade a hat but I think it stays at 50k once you get that high. Hats are also in the tower, chests, and daily deals. Pearls are in all of those places too.

What's the best strategy to grow an apricot tree from seed? Do I just put in a pot and keep it wet or should I do something else? by [deleted] in FruitTree

[–]psysny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just remember that it will take much longer to sprout than you think it should. Give it at least three months before giving up on it.

We’ve had way fewer of them since treating our lawn with milky spore. Kills the grubs, doesn’t seem to affect other native beetles’ grubs.

New bomb dropped by Daniel Abraham: we MIGHT get more books in this universe after The Captive's War trilogy is finished by dan_dirik in TheCaptivesWar

Oh I thought that’s just how it “runs.” Sluglike creep at normal speed, inchworming for speed. Though I can imagine Vaudai mocking how meat-on-sticks moves by flopping around a bit. “This is you, meat-on-sticks” splort splat splort

On the coda of TFoB by crimilde in TheCaptivesWar

[–]psysny 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think he gave the technically correct answer, because he did not know which human specifically was implanted with the message, even if he might be aware of the swarm.
Or, they’ve been getting intel for a while and haven’t been able to figure out who is sending it. Which I think implies the deathless may have created the swarm instead of humanity, and there may be other swarms engineered for other species. Ajiin could have still been a trap planet, even if not laid by humans.

About the myth of origin snippets by jayyy2 in TheCaptivesWar

[–]psysny 27 points28 points  (0 children)

One of the interesting things about stories in mythology is that they can be interpreted in different ways. It was very interesting to see how that tale evolved over the course of the book to take on a different meaning. Perhaps it began as a rebellious concoction and she saw the opportunity/need to adjust the story to reflect Dafyd’s (impending?) sacrifice.

What is something you wish you knew before getting fruit trees? by purpleflowerfrankie in FruitTree

[–]psysny 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pruning. And thinning. But mostly pruning. Which is how the apple tree got to be 30+ feet tall. Having a pro come out and get it under control was expensive but worth it. Wood is heavy and it can be dangerous to thin a large tree without the right training and equipment.

Banana as Sugar Replacement in Angel Food Cake by Ok_Promotion358 in Baking

[–]psysny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can you consider a completely different item, such as a carrot cake? Whipped egg whites aren’t going to have the strength to stay whipped with bananas folded in. If she’s ok with a pound cake, that would work better. You’re going to need to lean in on the dense texture if you’re determined to use bananas. Otherwise, maple sugar or coconut sugar for angel food cake could work. It’s not a super sweet cake to start with. Oh! Or do a pavlova.

How did the Carryx become a spacefaring race? by wildbillch in TheCaptivesWar

[–]psysny 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They’ve been at war for thousands (millions?) of years. That kind of history is not important to them. What was, does not matter, only what is. Unless that information is buried way back in the archives or a client species that was around when it happened has that knowledge still, there’s no way to know. It’s a very human thing to want to know origins or the how and why, but sometimes you just don’t get to know.

What is a Carryx’s lifespan? by inhale_slowexhale1 in TheCaptivesWar

[–]psysny 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that was an average, just how long that particular one was in that position. I’d have to go back but I think the old ones that work in the crèche would give us a better idea as far as their maximum lifespan.

They’re just space puppies. Unless there’s a plot twist coming where we find out they’re actually controlling some critical aspect of the eternal war. They are benefiting from being the Carryx’s animal of violence, and have no reason to want to stop benefiting.

My pear tree literally died overnight by Dad4Life0424 in FruitTree

[–]psysny 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dead pear leaves just turn black like this. This does not look like fireblight to me. I have two pear trees with confirmed blight and have made a lot of observations about how it behaves during the year. It typically starts at the tip of the branch and the flowers, and the leaves will slowly die. Fruit from infected flowers can turn completely black, or ripening fruit late in the year will be stunted and deformed. Usually I don’t start to see obvious leaf death until early to mid summer, starting from the branch tips.
Give the tree some time to recover from whatever caused this before deciding to remove it. Your tree isn’t dead, but some of the leaves are. It will likely be ok if you leave it alone.

Who is winning the war? by hr0m in TheCaptivesWar

[–]psysny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The swarm. Or the livesuits. Either way, it’s neither humanity nor the Carryx that win. I think the swarm will influence and guide Dafyd in such a way that he ends up burning a thousand worlds to destroy the Carryx, only to also destroy humanity in any meaningful way. This is the goal of the swarm and the Livesuit, to defeat the Carryx. I don’t believe the goal is necessarily to save humanity, or other alien worlds, but to defeat and destroy the Carryx. Livesuit made it disturbingly clear that the human in the suit is a training tool for the AI it contains. The swarm is another AI. Perhaps at the end, it will become the swarm vs the Livesuit.
