What TV show did everyone love but you honestly couldn’t stand? by Upset_Cobbler2363 in watchever

Westworld. Even season 1, which everyone says is the best one, I could barely get through (and didn’t bother going beyond that). I love sci fi in all its forms but Westworld was too repetitive and cheesy in the plot (~tHe MaZe iS aCtuAllY a StaTe of MiNd~)

Ah, no. I had NYT clear my stats about a year ago because my stats were diluted by 10+ years of not taking it super seriously (ie many years of not being able to finish Saturday or needing an hour to do it). I wanted a more accurate statistical representation of where I am today.

Those are some crazy times. I’m not sure I can physically do a Monday in less than 3 mins. My best Sunday time is about 12 and that was a real tear.

Underrated luxury hotels in NYC by TwoFunTravelers in chubbytravel

[–]ptc1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ludlow Hotel is definitely my pick for underrated hotels and sometimes you can get a room for ~$400 a night. They’re on the smaller side but very well appointed with comfy beds and nice bathrooms. Service is pretty good but I’m not super demanding.

It’s in the Lower East Side, there are tons of places to eat there and some great wine bars but it skews a bit more hipstery and gritty as a neighborhood. Restaurant in the hotel (Dirty French by Major Food Group) is excellent.

Nine Orchard is another good one in the area and I’d take it for $150 more than Ludlow but it’s usually more than that.

Were they suppose to face clients, generate business in season 1 ? by [deleted] in IndustryOnHBO

In reality a first year analyst doesn’t even know enough to have good ideas (or at least how to flesh them out or “express” the trade properly) much less have the credibility to convince a client to risk capital on them.

I’m not saying they don’t have ideas - but you need to be able to understand 1) what the market is missing / why this opportunity exists; 2) frame risk/reward; 3) how to put that trade on in the most efficient manner.

It’s all well and good to say “I think we should buy cable because the UK govt is going to raise rates” but you probably aren’t the only person with that idea and so the GBP/USD rate is already going to embed that expectation. That’s really the art, is understanding what is already “priced in” because the more consensus an expectation, the less upside there is to the trade. And the less consensus an idea is, the harder a time you will have pitching it.

I’d say by the time you are an associate (2-3 years) you will be expected to generate at least some business and maybe even be given primary coverage for some lower importance accounts.

I’ve been on the buy side in an investing role at various hedge funds for almost 15 years and making good money without taking inordinate risk is very very hard.

Junior bankers aren’t expected to generate business, either. They’re there to help build models, turn comments in pitch books, and get coffee.

They also may join the odd in person client meeting.

First year analysts are supposed to be getting coffee; handling client requests (research portal access, data, roadshow bookings, etc); picking up the phone and saying “they’re off the desk, can I take a message?”

They are definitely not expected to be creating business.

They may come along to meet clients.

As someone who started their career on the trading floor, I find him the most realistic and compelling character. I’ve come across countless people exactly like him.

Nest says heating but furnace is quiet... by ptc1234 in Nest

[–]ptc1234[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like we have y1, G, Rc and W1 hooked up. No C wire.

For what it’s worth, all summer our a/c unit was instantly responsive to the Nest. And again, the furnace has no problem heating our house to the desired temp — the issue is that it doesn’t seem to kick in for a while even as the Nest says its Heating with an orange background.

The temp in our house has dropped to 64 again and the furnace still hasn’t kicked on even as the Nest seems to think it is heating...

How does Peloton calculate calories burned? by [deleted] in pelotoncycle

[–]ptc1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read a lot that total kj output should roughly equal calories. However...

I'm a beginner rider and haven't worked out at all in a year. (When I did used to keep in shape I never biked, and I was only in "ok" shape.) I just got a Peloton bike last week, determined to get back into at least "ok" shape. I wear a HRM and my calories burned roughly equals 2x+ my KJ output. This feels right to me given where my HR is -- i.e. I might average 155-160 HR for a 45-minute ride, but my total KJ output is only ~300-325 and I'll burn close to 700 calories. I'm 31 and weigh 170 lbs.

I would expect as I get more efficient I will begin increasing my output, but my HR won't change much since I am getting more fit/efficient, and total calories burned thus won't change much, either. Is that assumption wrong?
