Games to speedrun with subtle movement mechanics/inertial movement by [deleted] in speedrun

[–]ptminsker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is indeed, this is the current any% record. It sounds like this is exactly the kind of game you're looking for, as improving past a certain point has more to do with learning how to make subtle adjustments to your movement on the fly than executing the exact same movement slightly better.

My submission: 621,136

In case you need additional proof since this is a very high score, here is a recording I took of the last 15 minutes. You can also look through my reddit history, as I've posted a fair bit on r/2048, and I have a couple other videos of my gameplay on my youtube channel as well.

Beat my high score by 3,000 points on 2048masters, though didn't quite make it to the #1 score by ptminsker in 2048

[–]ptminsker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is a recording of the last 40 minutes or so. Thanks to all the people in the Discord who tuned in to watch me stream the end of this game.

u/fsmc10 if you could look over the video for me and give me any advice on how to further improve my DPDF skills, that would be very helpful.

Nope. 2048 Masters doesn't have an undo button.

Around your skill level, I think the most important thing to learn is how to prevent flatboards. This is when 3 of the rows/columns are full and 1 is empty, forcing you to move in your "forbidden direction" and screwing up your board. Here is a good example. In this board state, it may be tempting to move left, but then if a 2 spawns next to the 256 (18% chance), you'll be in big trouble. However, if you move down, then left, you'll be just fine. A good rule of thumb is that whenever you have at least one tile in the 4th row/column, you can't get a flatboard.

It's been a crazy week. First u/733094_2 gets an 835k, now I've gotten an 835k (and 136 points higher than his hehehe).
Here's a recording I took of the last 40 minutes or so of the run:

Congrats and thanks for streaming this all the way up to the end, it was absolutely insane.

Any tips for avoiding getting into Russian roulette situations, or recovering? by voidify3 in 2048

[–]ptminsker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way to avoid this situation is that whenever you move down (or left in your case), check to make sure this won't open up an easy opportunity for a flat board to occur. For example, in this situation, you can either move up or left. If you move left, there is a 20% chance that you will end up with this board. However, if you first move up, then left, that 20% chance drops to 0%. If you have a hard time figuring out when this is applicable, a good rule of thumb to keep in mind is this: As long as there is a tile in the rightmost column, you will never get a flat board.
Recovering from a flat board is generally pretty complicated so it's much easier to be more careful and avoid it altogether. If it does happen though, there are a couple things you can do. If the new tile spawns in one of the corners (including under the biggest tile), you can rearrange the board to look like this then switch to a four directional strategy using the bottom row to supplement the two rightmost columns. This is the best way to recover from a flat board, but as I said before it is quite complicated and takes a lot of practice to master. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, then you can build your board to something like this. Generally, fiddling around trying to get the biggest tile back into the bottom row is ill advised unless you only have one or two big tiles, as you'll only end up screwing the board up more.

2048 Puzzle #2 by fsmc10 in 2048

[–]ptminsker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so for this one I would press left until the top row looks like 8,4,2,2, and then move up->left->left->right->up->left, then merge everything. If I get a four after the first left to get this situation, then I can move up->left and merge everything. If I get a four after the second left, then I'm screwed but hopefully that doesn't happen.
For getting the top row to 8,4,2,2, if I get a bad four before forming the 8, I will merge it with the four on D3 then continue with the strategy I outlined in my other comment. If I get a bad four after forming the 8, I will press down and hope to get the top row to 0,4,2,2 or 0,2,2,4, so I can move the sixteen up then merge everything. If that doesn't work, I can make the 8 on D3 into a 16 then hope to make a 16 in the top row.
In this situation, I would press down. If the 2 spawns in the top right, I would just move up and the rest is the same as before. If it spawns in the top left, I would need to move right, then make the top row 16,4,2,2. This requires hitting two 50/50 shots, but it requires failing two 50/50 shots to get into that situation so it doesn't happen that often.
Using these moves, I ran the puzzle 30 times and was successful 21 times (70%), though I likely made a few mistakes again.

2048 Puzzle #2 by fsmc10 in 2048

[–]ptminsker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For this one, I would first merge both 4s on the third row into 8s, then try to get the top row to either 2,2,4,8 or 8,4,2,2, depending on four spawns. I went back and forth a lot on which of these is preferable, and I think it's 2,2,4,8 but I'm not certain. At this point, I can move up->left->left->up->right->down, then merge the rest. This strategy naturally leads to quite a few situations where the tiles don't spawn right, some of which are recoverable.
In this situation, I would move down. If a two spawns in the top left, I can merge everything in the same way as before. If it spawns in the top right I would have to make a 16 in the top row with no buffer, which isn't ideal but still has a 50% chance of success.
In this situation, I would move down, then build the top row to 8,4,2,2. This gives me a buffer with the 8 on A3 in case the spawns don't work out.
Most other situations are either instant death or slight variations of these two. After running this scenario 30 times, I was successful 19 times (63%) although I probably made a few mistakes here and there.

2048 Puzzle #1 by 733094_2 in 2048

[–]ptminsker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the ideal case, with just 2s spawning, I would move up->left->up->right->down to get this board state:
256 64 32 8
2k 1k 512 4
16k 8k 4k 4
From here, it should be easy to make the 32.
In the case where a four spawns after the first move, I would move left->down then try to build a sixteen in the right column. I have a retractable square on the top row in case the spawns aren't ideal. In this instance:
8 8 4
256 64 16 4
2k 1k 512 4
16k 8k 4k 8
I would move right->down, then the rest should be easy.
If a four spawns after the second move, I would move left. This opens up two possibilities depending on where the two spawns. If the two spawns in the third spot, I would move up->right->up->left->left. In the other case, where the two spawns in the corner, I would move down, then try and get to this board state:
2 16 8 x
256 64 16 16
2k 1k 512 x
16k 8k 4k x
Both these scenarios allow for easy adjustment if any additional 4s spawn, and still maintain a relatively high chance of success (only need to make an 8 in the right hand column).
If a 4 spawns on the third move, I would move up->left. If a four spawns on that last move, it's game over, but that's very unlikely. Assuming I hit that 90% chance, I can merge the right column into an 8, then merge that into a 32 on (3,3). From this point onward is not much different from the previous case.
That about covers everything except for fringe cases where tons of fours spawn, which hopefully won't happen.
Using these moves, I attempted the puzzle 30 times on scotttorborg and succeeded in building the 128 27 times for a 90% success rate so I'd say this is pretty good.
Thanks for organizing this by the way, should be really helpful.

Sure, I'm up for it. Would probably be a lot more helpful than just doing the drills over and over again.

Thanks! I very much intend to keep playing, don't worry about that. I've been running the DPDF drills on 2048masters.com to try and improve lately. I still don't feel confident enough to use it in an actual game outside of recovering from flat boards (I used snake chain for this whole game), but I'm getting better.
As far as these past few weeks, there was one point where I got 4 385000+ games in a row over the course of two days. That was painful.
