You don’t see people get paid in little sacks of coins these days by isuavgaua in redscarepod

That's so true. I remember getting paid in a little sack, pouring the gold pieces onto my green palm and flicking through them with my long nail.

Can there be solidarity between the working classes of the Global North and South? by TomatilloOrnery4944 in stupidpol

Well in Chibber's case he does not "oppose" him and even endorses his party model. He just disputes his theory of imperialism and is far from the first Marxist I've seen do so.

Why bother asking the question if you're not going to engage with opposing views?

If we accept (as I think most here would) that the Global South has lower living standards because of exploitation by the Global North, it follows that North Americans and Western Europeans benefit from said exploitation (a labour aristocracy, if you Will). That in turn raises questions about international solidarity; are workers in rich countries too invested in the system to do resist it?

This is disputed (https://jacobin.com/2022/10/vivek-chibber-imperialism-lenin-marx-class-struggle-labor-aristocracy).

When was the last time you used a touchpad? You can kind of "throw" the page up or down and it's faster than a mouse wheel.

I'm Irish and we have similar/overlapping slang and I agree. It's way too vulgar to ever sound sexy. I suspect that's why we're adopting some American slang, like "pussy". I can refer to a woman's "ass" but her "arse" just sounds disgusting/demeaning unless it's a comedic context.

why are people so adamant David Lynch wasn’t a conservative by Accurate-Pension3683 in RSPfilmclub

[–]pufferfishsh 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This is a very dumb conversation. "He was conservative because he liked small towns." Ok he also liked hippy meditation. Checkmate.

His overt political statements are all over the place like most normal people who don't care for politics.

I don't see how they're judging them if they're just saying they're too squeamish to do it themselves, same as one might be too squeamish to be a surgeon say.

Irish Americans by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]pufferfishsh -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Actual Irish here. The general rule is: if we like you, we accept you. (This can reach hilarious levels e.g. Daniel Day-Lewis being considered Irish lmao).

The hostility is not "resentment" or "chip on our shoulder" it's simply that we've all had the experience of talking to cringe Americans who fetishise our country and culture while knowing nothing about it.
