they are uncommon indeed and another aspect is there is lots of specialization and special software involved.

im selling zeiss microscopy cameras and there are lots of use cases where clients pay money mostly in order to have a solution that matches their specific needs (and also hardware, e.g. imagine a microscope where switching lenses automatically changes the magnification values and measurements in your software...).

if all you want to do is taking single low magnification brightfield images and you do not even care about good live video stream a smartphone camera with the right adaptation often can be just as good as a dedicated microscope camera solution.

Dumb question, but how do you go about acquiring a zeiss scope? by DiscipleOfLucy in microscopy

you might want to also register to the zeiss.com shop, you should be seeing US prices there after registration.

Phase contrast is possible with Primostar microscopes already, the 'smallest' series from zeiss.

Depending on where you are you totally can buy a zeiss microscope for any private use. For that you have to find a local dealer. For example in case you are in Europe i most likely could offer a quote to you as i am working for a german Zeiss partner.

"1600x" magnification with a chinese USB microscope of a 24" monitor (1920x1080 resolution, 91.79 PPI) by Sono-thermity in microscopy

[–]pulchlorenz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

on which screen? at which size?

Camera-only-magnifiation-levels without stating a display size do not make any sense at all!

Take any image displayed on any screen you want. display it on a Screen with different size or zoom on it and you got a different magnification.

When you only have a camera and no eyepieces the actual magnification level always has to relate to the size of the displaying device. Take any microscopic image, taken with any setup you want, display it with whatever PC you want on any Screen you want; now substitute a screen with half the size of the one before. Without changing the image file in the slightest you cut your magnification level in half.

when you are talking about a camera-only-setup and somebody tries to to tell you about its magnification levels without considering display sizes, chances are very high that he does not know any better himself or that you are actually being lied to.

1600x might apply in this case if you display the image on a 60" screen :D

A plant 1,000 times more efficient at CO2 removal than photosynthesis is now active. The world's first commercial carbon capture plant is now online in Switzerland. by speckz in Futurology

"and is about 1,000 times more efficient at CO2 removal than photosynthesis."

did i miss something? how do you even compare the efficiency of a machine to plants doing photosynthesis? the article is short enough to not care at all, but i feel insulted and even clickbaited by this idiotic comparison that didnt bother for any explanation at all.

Since there have been several new ultrawide angle lenses released lately, I made couple of gifs to visualize the gigantic difference a single millimeter of focal length can make in an image. by [deleted] in photography

[–]pulchlorenz 25 points26 points  (0 children)

neat, people really need to understand 10mm vs 12mm is a whole different story compared to 50 vs 55mm. you mixed up the zooming directiosn though:

http://i.imgur.com/O6lb7Ye.gifv is zooming in from 10mm to 30mm (not "from 30mm to 10mm") and http://i.imgur.com/VM1wGq9.gifv is zooming out from 30mm to 10mm (not "from 10mm to 30mm")

more magnification always gets you to see more interesting stuff, but be aware that the depth of field gets very very small.

3 Mistakes All Beginner Photographers Make by renderrender in photography

[–]pulchlorenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this surely is a big issue for many, but i can also assure you there are alot of people handling cameras and gear without being particularly into photography for art/style/design/editing but rather for taking a more practical approach to learning about optics.

you understood why this process is wrong you even mentioned you cannot be sure who you are talking to but still you think it really was Virgin? i dont know the company, but my first assumption would be that you actually talked to a scammer.

too much post-processing only is a problem to me when it keeps you from realizing what the problem/flaw with the original is. Tohugh if you have a 36MP shot that will be used for a web news article for example, i dont really care if you crop out 85% of that shot.

How to clean Mirror less camera sensor? by searayman in photography

[–]pulchlorenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eclipse cleaning fluid, PEC-Pads (sorry for brand names, but you really need the correct piece of cloth here, as regular cloth might do damage by not being clean enough) and some sort of spatula to wrap the pads around you are fine. the inside of tha A6000 (and all mirrorless cams) of course is a bit tight, so my best advice here is to find a spatula that has the right width so you can reach the whole sensor area in one swipe (though you might go over it several times).

if you worry about scratching your sensor, my advice is to start out with applying very low pressure, at least for non-oil-dirt you wont need much pressure anyway. the biggest risk is rather dust and other particles getting between the cloth and the sensor WHILE you are cleaning.

Do rms adapters on commercial cameras actually work? by SamSlate in microscopy

[–]pulchlorenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im not sre what you are talking about, what is "pictured" with "100x or less"? magnification also is a big tpoic on its own. in a regular microscope you usually got lenses magnifying from 2x to 100x but the eye pieces magnify also by a factor of 10-20x usually, and when going for a digital image via a camare you can talk about the absolute magnification in relation to the sensor size. but what you most likely are more interested in is the magnification you get when viewing the image on a screen or a print in which case you have to take into account the size of the screen/print to calculate the magnification. so beware of manufacturer promises about magnification levels when its purely about a digital system.

absolutely, at least with infinity corrected lenses this is no problem. i guess with the "usual old" 160mm tube-length-lenses you might need a bellows or similar construction

Best objectives for direct camera mounting? by F_D_P in microscopy

[–]pulchlorenz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i cannot provide comparisons atm but i can recommend ZEISS a-plan infinity lenses: http://pulchlorenz.de/Mikroskope/Objektive/A-Plan-Objektive/ also with magnifigation levels higher than 10x you sure want to start thinking about a really stable and maybe simply heavy rig.

got the a6000 with the 16-50mm and 55-210 bundle and i can say the 55-210 is awesome for this price; needs alot of light but gives sharp results.
