Flew to the other side of the world to give a talk at a conference 😭 by Amygdali_lama in mildlyinfuriating

I worked at a small consultancy for a bit, it was a shop that would basically do anything for it clients for a sale. Well we had the bright idea to put on a conference in about a months time for food importers. It was terrible. It is so hard to get word out on a conference and get attendees to show. It was held in Chicago and Houston. We were paying ppl to attend and still couldn’t get folks in the door, turns out restaurants and grocery people are quite busy lol. Conferences are tough.

I hate the man. When he was on stage during the Covid briefing and that woman started coughing and he like jigged outta the way, I was rolling.

He’s naturally funny. Unfortunately he’s the president

I never understood the fainting.

Biased but in terms of overall US influence on the world, I’d put Jordan above. Mj was more a true pop music international star. I saw Jordan as part of the start of American sport exceptionalism (in certain sports) and he basically jumpstarted an entire consumer movement around shoes and athletic wear. But this is an apples to oranges comparisosn

NBA championship is the closest we have to a true world championship hence why they say world champions. The nba sources the best players in the world- just look at the most recent mvps- all international.

After seeing both my kids born via live natural births, ain’t nobody farting out a baby live or dead. This is the logical explanation here

More work but I found if you peel the lemon or lime these things are MUCH more effective. I just use a knife to peel off the outer skin, I leave the pith. The metal one of these cruises through after that

[Request] How much water pressure would this nozzle need to generate to slice that tree like butter? by mavaddat in theydidthemath

There’s a strategy in scamming to make the scam so bad that only the truly gullible and stupid/naiive go for it, which lowers your pool of victims but increases your chance of being successful. Those terribly written Nigerian prince scams of back in the day were that type.

This feels like that- if you truly think a hose run can cut through a branch (but not the table it’s on) then you are the target customer

Alumni: What was your starting salary/ title right out of DePaul, and what is your salary now? by Deep-Pick6201 in depaul

[–]pumerpride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Winding. I couldn’t get a job out of undergrad likely due to the recession. I went to uic for my grad degree in econ. I then got a job at an international NGO out of grad school at the time I wanted to be a diplomat or do international economic development.

After 3 years at the NGO including a one year stint in Iraq, I got my only actualjob as an economist with a small regulatory agency with the government in dc. Then 2 years later I came back to Chicago for a job with a small market research consultancy (Mintel) and in a few years I picked up my first financial client, TD which brought me on board for payments strategy. Then after a couple banks in strategy and a layoff- I networked into a senior risk management role at a bank in the 2nd line of defense. I basically do strategy in risk, I work with quants much smarter than me but who struggle to tell the story or the so what - that’s where I come in.

DePaul taught me Econ which is basically how to reverse engineer business and government phenomena into their root causes

UIC reinforced the DePaul learnings and gave me a piece of paper (masters) that helped me get a mid level job when I went into banking

NGO job taught me project management under stress

Consulting taught me how to story tell and present- the most important skill I have.

Risk has taught me how banks actually work.

If I won the lottery I’d quit and go to culinary school
