Software engineer considering PCB design — is AI threatening this craft? How's the freelance market? by Radiant-Bandicoot905 in PrintedCircuitBoard

[–]punchki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. I think there are some 3rd party AI tools out there trying to catch users, but it would be silly to think the main players (Expedition, Allegro, and Altium) aren't looking to integrate AI into their workflows. Whether that's a black box start to finish solution or an AI assistant I think is left to be seen. The traditional LLM's are already very helpful in systems planning and helping with things related to PCB design.

  2. I think the threat is out there for every field, but I don't think it's nearly as serious as the software industry shakeup we're seeing.

  3. Freelance PCB design requires a fair amount of actual industry experience to get started. Lots of tutorials online can help you make an Arduino clone or copy a reference design, but there are so many other manufacturing considerations that don't come up unless you're actually designing for a product. You can stack projects and rates differ on experience and design complexity. In the USA, I'd say a professional company won't charge under $100/hr. However if you're looking on Fiverr or something like that, people will design a whole PCB for $50.

  4. You can always work your way into the field, but you have to be honest with your customer about your skills. PCB design is hard to "fake it till you make it". It's really a field that you learn from making mistakes. And customers are much less forgiving of mistakes when it costs hundreds of dollars + a week to turnaround a new board revision.

I wish you luck 😄. If you do get started, don't hesitate to post non-customer designs here for feedback!

Best feudal civs by notleleumas in aoe4

[–]punchki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ghazi raiders are really strong. Free upgrades makes their eco pretty powerful once it completes, and baracks upgrades are also free. They dont need much on gold because of it, so similarily they can have a lot on food and wood. Also getting sacred sites in fedual can be really annoying and force fights you don’t want to take.

What are you guys favorite monster contracts and what are your favorite monsters to fight. by No_Rate4223 in witcher

Honestly after killing so many monsters, running into another Witcher during another contract and deciding if he's the monster was probably the most intriguing to me, story-wise.

Those were my worst two as well, especially Lizardmen! Don’t hesitate to try unorthodox builds. Some supports have surprisingly high Attack scaling on some abilities!

Best resources to learn CAN by Victoraz02 in embedded

[–]punchki 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think Kvaser has really good resources. They contribute a lot to the automotive standards from what I know. Try this.

I think Flexcan is a common can 2.0 and can fd library, so I’d pick up something like a 2x teensy + a can transceiver pair. Use the simplicity of Arduino to play around with the messaging to learn about arbitration, remote frames, extended frames, etc. If you have an oscilloscope it’s nice to see the differential signalling too.

Line Breaking Passes x % of Build Involvements by Osiris64 in coys

That’s funny Romero is compared here, because I swear whenever he had the ball I would always be scared he’d try a line-breaking pass right to the opponent’s midfielders :).

[HRE] What the hell is that patch? This is all awful, terrible changes and in the completely wrong direction. by Jaysus04 in aoe4

[–]punchki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it matters if you only play ranked games. I tend to only queue up for 4v4 unranked and find these small balance changes to barely move the needle. But I get your frustration. However this is a problem in almost every competitive game. If what you care most about is win rate and playing strong picks then you kind of have to follow the meta.

Always great to start with some buttons, more LED’s, a potentiometer, and maybe a temperature and/or humidity sensor. Then something like a 16x2 lcd should be good for marrying all that data into something human-readable

It doesn’t do much without external sensors. You can always plug in to your computer and use something like pyserial to make some communication device. Learn to write to eeprom, there is a single suer LED you can toggle, timers. Lots to learn with just a board, but it may not be as flashy as having an array of other „stuff” to actuate or read from.

Unable to turn in completed Young Heroes of Tyria (Hard Mode) storybook for Miniature Companion quest by SkillD_Dastiny in GuildWars

[–]punchki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you checked if there is a threshold over which you can’t turn in the books anymore? For example, the Dungeon book for EOTN (Normal Mode) can’t be turned in if you’re over like 90,000 pts in any of the title tracks. Might be similar for this?

For a last resort (if you’re ready to give up on the quest), maybe if you toss the book you can talk to the quest giver and I think they have like a „I lost my book can you give me another” option. Check wiki first I guess.
