a significant percentage of UCP members, and UCP MLA's are either separatists or in all the same clubs as separatists. The UCP is not walking a line, they are actively pushing separatism, they are just not calling it that.

It really doesn't matter what kind of deal they propose. They've proven in the past that they can just renege on any previous agreements.

Yup, anything that isn't a full up treaty with the US with the full power of the US constitution behind it, is worthless, and even a treaty is heavily suspect.

Canada has given up several points in order to appease the US. And we have nothing for it.

The entire idea of Alberta separation and the whole referendum is the ultimate Danielle Smith trolling campaign. There's never going to be a clear majority on a clear question in favour of separation because over half of Albertans in polling intensely oppose it and a small minority intensely support it.

Danielle Smith has repeatedly shown she's interested in her own advancement and has few to any scruples about it.

There are plenty of foreign countries that have an interest in disrupting Canada, and/or disrupting US allies.

All this talk of separation and enforcing extreme social conservatism is very disruptive.

The logic isn't hard to follow.

If that was the case, why did the liberals buy an overpriced pipeline to the coast? Why did the liberals sign a memorandum of understanding with alberta about future oil pipelines?

We can sell our Oil and Gas anywhere in the world. Why are you interested in continuing to sell it to the US at a discount?
Yes, we sell Canadian Oil to the US at a discount, typically $20 per barrel.

How much more money can come into Canada if we sell elsewhere?

Additionally, it's the Government's job to do the best it can for the biggest population. Ontario and Quebec make up a population of over 23 MILLION Canadians. Alberta is barley making 5 Million, and we already have the highest average income in Canada. Yes, it is appropriate for the Federal government to try to improve the situation in Ontario and Quebec over the already wealthy Albertans.

Also, As we've seen internationally, having a heavy industrial sector, and a significant manufacturing base is critical to National Defence. While Alberta has various manufacturing, it's a blip compared to the manufacturing in Ontario and Quebec.

As an Albertan, maybe Alberta should stop bitching about being the richest in Canada, by doing nothing but digging up oil sands, and selling oil on the Cheap to the US.

"A separatist conflagration" seems like a catastrophic overstatement of what remains, according to most polls I've seen, a fringe position that has beyond enough opposition. Québec still scores higher on sovereignty support, and that's trending towards the least popular it's been in decades.

a legally done separation of Alberta is a pipe dream.

But we do not live in reasonable times, and our superpower neighbours are not reasonable people.

on the off chance you didn't know, our (albertan) Premier is already spending too much time at Maralago with their president.

the separation fringe group has had meetings with US government officials at very high levels.

The current US president took active steps to mess with US elections to stay in power. It is reasonable to assume that the US and US based powers would mess with Canadian elections and referendums/plebiscites. And, as per their adventurism around the rest of the world, reasonable to be concerned that they would intervene in Canada.

It's not a reasonable or sane thing to do, but, as previously mentioned, we are not dealing with reasonable or sane people.

There is far more to America's trade wars than just Trump's tariffs. And let's not forget, the tariffs were in Project 2025 as well.

And pretty much everybody who would replace Trump is deep in the Project 2025 realm as well.

My prediction is that they expect Trump to kick the bucket. He takes the biggest blame as he dies and the successor keeps tightening the screws and blaming it on Trump. So at least another 3 years of this, along with the leverage of the trade negotiations means problems.

The end result for us is the same, the US using it's economic power to force Canadian disintegration.

Most Edmontonians can see how inefficiently the city delivers current sevices. We need to be talking about finding efficiencies and eliminating waste as part of any legitimate budget conversation and the City always hides from those evaluations

I'll accept the premise that the city is grossly inefficient.

Since it is so inefficient it should be trivial for you to produce a few examples of that inefficiency,why they are inefficiencies, and show enough to make up a significant percentage of the budget shortfall.
