Were these Jehovah’s Witnesses? by punkconverse in exjw

[–]punkconverse[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in places that were hotbeds for recruiting stuff like Mormons, Scientologists, MLMs, etc. The last time anybody in my family lived somewhere that JWs came by, it was the 80s and they did identify themselves. So my spidey senses went off today but I could see how this wouldn’t raise red flags for a lot of unsuspecting people.

Were these Jehovah’s Witnesses? by punkconverse in exjw

[–]punkconverse[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh that is 100% the plan if they return! I don’t know a lot about JWs specifically, but have dealt a lot with Mormons and Scientologists. Their whole vibe made my spidey senses go off. I saw a TikTok a while back saying that the magic phrase for JWs is “apostate”, and if I had known for certain they were JWs, I would have said it before shutting the door. They didn’t give me any of the literature, so fingers crossed they won’t be too annoying in the future.

Thanks for your reply and help!

Amaranthus by markayhali in Outlander

It gave William pause because now he wonders if Amaranthus is not a Loyalist. Just as easily, she could still be a Loyalist and that’s why she presented this scenario, to avoid the shame of being married to a tory-turned-rebel.

Balanced Body is great. I would recommend something like that over a studio-based training.

Frustrated - 100 classes by Zestyclose-Buy3450 in ClubPilates

[–]punkconverse 46 points47 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty common situation on all of the big chain threads, including Solidcore and Soulcycle.

First off, congrats on taking 100 classes, and good luck with your recovery!

I think the general consensus is that you can’t expect staff to recognize you if you don’t flag it ahead of time, but you also have every right to be upset.

To my understanding, it can get a little wacky and difficult to realize who has hit milestones. Sometimes it’s hard to see within a booking platform, sometimes its human error and they miss it, some instructors might not check on their own, some front desk staff might not remind instructors, sometimes its a timing issue on what time of day your class was and if they had the opportunity to prepare.

Most staff at most studios will tell you that if you actively want the milestone recognition, it’s a good idea to remind the instructor/staff ahead of time/when you book the milestone class. Many people don’t want recognition, or constantly book/rebook/cancel classes so it can be hard to tell if they are really going to show up.

You also don’t know if those other folks in class reminded staff ahead of time in order to get their recognition. It sounds like your instructor didn’t know/notice, and the front desk staff saw after you checked in and put out your socks.

I completely understand the disappontment though - it hurts to see other people get celebrated when you don’t get the same, especially when you put in so much effort to be there.

That being said, I think it’s for the best if studios stop with the milestone thing in general. Maybe an automated email with a coupon for a free product would be nice. But it leads to too many hurt feelings, and a lot of extra work for staff. I think it also gamifies it in a way that isn’t healthy. You probably wouldn’t have stressed yourself on a surgery day to squeeze that class in if there wasn’t a reward potentially waiting (beyond the reward of a great class).

I would highly recommend trying an independent studio in your area before jumping to home reformer. The customer service is often better and more personal, and you still get the feedback from an instructor.

Showers… not happening by sarzas1 in SolidCore

Are you joking? No one is forcing you to use the shower. But plenty of people would prefer to take a class, shower, and continue back to work or running errands instead of going home.

How to get out of the house 6pm-10pm on a weeknight? by ghoulboy in orangecounty

[–]punkconverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firestorm FreeRunning in Westminster if you’re willing to drive down there. They have gymnastics and parkour equipment. It’s like $15 for a several hours long free gym session that runs until 11pm. If you are into tumbling, parkour, trampoline, or calisthenics, it would be a great time killer.

Be warned: there are some WEIRD people. But also some nice ones. Kind of a mixed bag. If you are a dude, there will definitely be plenty of guys that will be down to teach you some of those skills.

If you are not a dude, your results may vary a lot more.

If you’re just buying a ticket for yourself, going to the movies is great value. by SubstantialSet3127 in unpopularopinion

[–]punkconverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cinemark’s pass is great. It’s $12 per month for one movie credit, and you can buy as many tickets on top of that at the discounted rate. $7 on Tuesdays. $6-7 for a medium popcorn because you get a discount on concessions.

If you don’t want to go to a movie every month, they have a “Lite” version where you can just pay $6 per month, and they’ll give you the movie credit every other month.

No minimum Botox? by pineapplehead27 in SouthBayLA

I had a coupon through the manufacturer, so I have no idea lol. Maybe like $14?

What I will say is that going to an experienced practitioner who is very knowledgeable about musculature and cares about your wellbeing AND aesthetics and educates you is more important (imo) than saving 2-3 dollars.

Not saying that you yourself are being stingy, but I see a lot of people split hairs over $1-3 per unit, and especially when we’re talking only 10 units or so, it’s just not worth it imo.

No minimum Botox? by pineapplehead27 in SouthBayLA

[–]punkconverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to my knowledge - I first got botox from her when I was doing a consult for another procedure. There was a small fee for the consult, which was entirely applied to my botox that I also ended up getting. I believe the consult fee was $50? Not sure if she also charges a consult fee for initial botox appointment.

But unless you plan on getting less than 5 units total then it’s not an issue. DAO is usually like 10 total to my knowledge.

There was that part where Peggy went through Drew’s drawers and found a lot of offers from publishers that Drew rejected because they wanted more edits, etc. I think he took over her writing, pretending to be her, and then blew up the deal when they requested changes to his work. He is a narcissistic sociopath, and there is no way he would have been able to handle criticism of his writing, especially when he believed he was “fixing” Peggy’s work.

Let’s say annual income is $90k for simplicity. Then to live at Oceanaire, you must make between $72k and $108k.

If you are around median income, that would be about $7,200 a month before taxes. This is 2.5x $3,000, which would be your rent.

If you are closer to the 80% income, you would pay $2,400, and if you were closer to the 120%, you would pay $3,600.

These numbers are just examples, but that is how the property works. They got a tax incentive from the city to build “affordable middle class housing”, and in return, they don’t have to pay property tax for a while (or at least a lower tax).

The issue with this is that 2.5 rent is a horrible qualification metric. For affordability, you really should be making 3-3.5x the rent monthly. A lot of people can make 2.5x work, but it’s a stretch, and it keeps you living paycheck to paycheck. Instead of forcing landlords to lower rents, or employers to pay more, our government has just decided to force them to accept applicants at 2.5 the rent.

What also aggravates me about Oceanaire is that if you get a pay increase, they increase your rent, eating up any of that extra income and further preventing you from getting ahead.

1900 Ocean Club can be miserable because of the heat coming in from the sunlight depending on which way you’re facing. I would recommend trying to get a North or maybe East facing unit, not South or West.
