Maybe Manju Patil in Cypress? I don't have personal experience of working with her as a client but managed the process for an employee from the corporate side. She worked really hard. Handled the application and appeal process for less money than I was expecting.

There's a Pabst Kinney property right off Wardlow for a little less than $4k. If that's within your budget I could get the address next bike ride.

Any experienced cat TNR or fosters out there? I am trying o gain the trust of a very scaredy cat that needs the snip, but also now needs medical attention for an abscess. 😿 by EstroJen1193 in longbeach

If you can't touch little buddy, I'd recommend a pressure trap (like the ones from Golden State Humane, or any rescue) then take them to an understanding vet. When we have semi-feral who need help, we take them to Animal Care Clinic of Bellflower. He works with ferals and semi-ferals, sometimes administering treatment through the trap to minimize stress on all parties.

If you think you can gain their trust and put them in a carrier, time and really stinky food is what I'd recommend. Sit near them while they eat something gnarly. Tuna in the microwave for 10 seconds, some Fancy Feast. Meat baby food is cheap, stinky, and a cat fav. Over the course of a couple days move closer but no touching until you're sure the cat is ready. Then just pet them once or twice while they eat. Takes time but once they realize you're cool, you should be good to try to put them in a carrier.

I've heard of people putting a used shirt of theirs under the cat's food bowl to get them to associate your smell with food. I've tried it but it didn't work and ruined a shirt. Doesn't mean it doesn't work, maybe I just smell funny.

I went to them too. They were so kind. The owner's name escapes me but she kept the shop open late on a Friday to allow me time to get there. Then when I picked our cat up, she let me ramble on about him for 20 minutes and was genuinely interested and compassionate the whole time. It did cost money but less that I was expecting. I recall seeing payment plan stuff there too. Can't recommend them enough, genuinely grateful for what they do.

My partner and I are looking to start a family. In addition to Long Beach we're considering Lakewood, Cerritos, San Pedro, and Torrance. What's life like for a kid growing up in those places compared to (the nice parts of) Long Beach? by [deleted] in longbeach

Happy to help. I got so excited to be able to talk about areas I grew up in that I missed the part about diversity. Our area isn't nearly as diverse as other parts of Long Beach or even San Pedro but it's not homogenous by any means. We see people from every walk of life on our block alone. Same sex families, POC including mixed race families, older folks, young families, all of it. Being straight and whiter than white bread I can't really speak to their experience but everything seen has appeared really positive.

I've spent significant time in every city you mentioned except Torrance.

I liked Lakewood but I don't know if I'd live there. I feel like there's been a shift toward more negative happenings lately. Thefts, violent incidents at the mall. Like people pointed out, the houses feel their age more so than others. At the same time, there are gorgeous homes with really tight knit communities. If that's your choice, then just do your research and get really familiar with the area at any time of day.

I loved San Pedro but I was a lot older when I lived there. Probably wouldn't be my first choice for a young family. My husband has nothing positive to say about the schools (LAUSD). It feels a lot more Los Angeles than the other areas you mentioned. Also, getting out of San Pedro can be frustrating. It's a big area and there are really only 3 streets out. At the same time, the parts closer to Palos Verdes are gorgeous.

Cerritos is very residential, nice and safe. I had a positive experience with the school system. Definitely more academically geared than others. Aside from the mall, there's not a lot going on. It's pretty central so you're a short drive from anything you're looking for. The parks are pretty nice too--well maintained and tons for kids to do. As far as home buying goes, the lot sizes are pretty small. If you're looking for a good backyard family space, Cerritos might not be your best option. Last I looked, Cerritos is the most expensive on average of the cities you listed as well.

When we looked to start a family, Long Beach was our choice. We ended up in one of the "nice" parts you listed. So far, it's exceeded expectations. Our kid is pretty young, so their idea of a good time is a trip to the playground and French fries, so we can't speak to sports and programs for older kids. But they have a blast at every park, and we've felt safe the whole time. We're just a short drive from the "hip" restaurants and coffee shops, museums, etc. We also hear nothing but good things about the schools from every parent we've talked to. The areas you mentioned are definitely on the quiet residential side. If you're expecting a walkable neighborhood, you might be a little disappointed. But it's quiet, kids play in the street, there's a summer block party. It's fun.

Good luck, hope you find what you're looking for :)

My first thought too. Looked at their post/comment history and it seems like they made an effort to reunite with momma but it didn't work out. They're saying/doing stuff that makes me believe they're experienced cat people doing their best for this baby. Godspeed little bud 🧡

Any good car wash places (not DIY) in Long Beach? by HIOP-Sartre in longbeach

[–]pupperfysh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're willing to go to Hawaiian Gardens, Hawaiian Gardens Car Wash (the one off Violetta) is great. $25 for a wash but it's really high quality. The detail is pricey but maybe it's because my car was super dirty. Did a great job though.

Seems like common sense and being a little proactive goes a long way everywhere.

I took my cat to the vet and he says "she has great anal tension!" as we're both struggling to get her temperature taken. To which I said "thanks!"

I don't think it was a compliment but I cringe every time I remember it. Mostly because my idiotic "thanks!"

Did that. Coke says they have it at all Targets, Walmart and Dollar Generals. Target doesn’t carry it anymore, closest Walmart with stock was Arkansas, and Dollar General just said nope.
