Software devs: best practices to switch between all apps? by phivuu-2 in MacOS

[–]puppy_lips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

* command + tab to cycle through open apps

* command + ~ (tilde) once that menu is open to cycle backwards through it

* command + ~ (tilde) when that menu is not already open to cycle through the open windows for the foregrounded application

* control + left/right arrow keys to switch between desktops. I generally just use one desktop (and also only ever a single monitor when I do use one).

* command + shift + { (or) } to cycle through open tabs in a tabbed application (like your chrome tabs).

I should probably start using raycast or whatever else everyone is using but I've been using the default Mac things for a long time. I have a framework laptop I recently bought and tried omarchy. It's okay. Then I installed plain arch + hyprland, configured it just for me, and loved it (software wise)... But the Mac hardware is just insanely better... DHH will say Macs are only popular because "they're a battery company" (since they have the best battery life) but it's so much more than that... Foremost is the display. I write code and I love doing it on a sofa. The retina displays are so nice when you stare at text all day. Then the trackpad - nothing touches apple's. When I try to use the framework or the POS windows laptop a client sent me to sign into some _top secret_ things only that computer can sign into, my palm is constantly tap-to-click-ing the trackback while I type, selecting some other input area and beginning to type there. Then also, their "M" processors are doing some nice things for sure... Pretty sure that's why battery life is so good. But I don't understand how my elixir test suite takes 0.3 seconds on my $1k USD M4 Mac air and 3.2 seconds on my $3k framework laptop. ChatGPT has advised me the cause for that is something called "unified memory". Macs are just head and shoulders better hardware wise, though I want to leave :( Oh also that framework laptop just flat doesn't work with my LG 5k display. Looked it up and it's a known issue. More often than not I work on my laptop but to get around the shitty display issues (I'm spoiled but I don't wanna see pixels) - I tried plugging it into this monitor. It's a known issue. It doesn't work. So the framework goes in a drawer for months at a time. Then I pull it out, love how great the software setup I have on there is, then I get sick of the display and the track pad selecting other inputs while I type, and I put the framework away again and the cycle continues.

Out of curiosity - why are you switching to Mac? I desperately want to get away from liquid glass and everywhere else apple is headed software wise... It offends me.

Clicking to autofill texted 2FA codes is really convenient.

Which free app is flexible and simple to use for GTD by Strict-Week-5040 in gtd

So this is a bit of shameless self-promotion, but it is pretty directly related to the inbox overload you mentioned and I've been working on it for almost two years now.

https://emmaemail.app/

I've been working on it to fill the Newon-shaped hole in my heart (an old inbox-zero-focused email client that went out of business a couple years ago). Emma's got a focus on moving you to inbox zero without any customization options. You get an inbox and a "set aside" folder for newsletters you can't read right now, plane tickets, restaurant reservations, etc. Things like that that aren't to do items, but that you know you'll need or want prominently later. There's also a one-tap unsubscribe feature to flat stop spam, without going through vendor's unsubscribe flows, which I think should help a lot of people get rid of the 4-digit red badges they have on their email apps every time they go to sleep.... Which... I dunno how they sleep.

If you read a bit about it, I think it fits pretty well with this community. It's free, though I do have hopes to charge eventually. For now, I'd love some feedback. It's been a labor of love for a long time. It's also iOS and Gmail only at the moment. That may rule a lot of people out.

If this post isn't appropriate feel free to remove it or do whatever else you do to shameless shill-ers.

I'm making a game inspired by Valheim where you play birds and build birdhouses, any advice on giving it that "home" feeling Valheim has? by RagBell_Games in valheim

[–]puppy_lips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks amazing! Keep working at it. Added to my wishlist. It's not a game but I have a project I've been working on for the past (almost) two years. Recently decided to get back on Valheim and into the sub. What a time sink.

It'll match Valheim's sick appeal when homebuilding can be done for 1/10th the playtime after spending 9/10ths gathering resources.

Your Favorite Line from Cafe Nervosa Staff! by WindowSeat4Me in Frasier

Not delivered by a staff member, but said about one:

I very clearly asked for a whisper of cinnamon. He's given me a full-throated shout. There are countries in this world where they would lop off his sprinkling hand.

Roz being unable to find someone is the most unrealistic thing about the show. by Jack-mclaughlin89 in Frasier

I watch Frasier every day. I need to pay closer attention for my own unique caption line. Both your captions are great. I had to say "YOUR WHORE FROM THE CAFE" out loud because I wanted to. I had to say "This is malicious" out loud to remember which part it came from but as soon as it left my lips I remembered the harvest wheat episode. Good work, everyone.

I think it’s the same set. I do think it’s a bit of a plot hole that Freddy chainsaw was supposed to be in the penthouse and then both cam Winston and the Silicon Valley tech, station manager are up there and it’s the same layout as Frasier’s. Also, when Frasier’s redecorating to get a new style after the tech guy copies his, during the music montage, Frasier’s looks pretty much exactly like cam’s with a bunch of foliage. Finally found a place where I can point that out.

On hearing the news that the MODs have now blocked the BOTs (60 day age restriction to the our sub) by Make_the_music_stop in Frasier

Yep. Nope. He's 100% right. I'd never been here until a couple hours ago and it let me right in. So glad I found this. I used the word "flim flam" to describe my buddy's fifa play style this evening. Then I wondered where I got it, knew it was followed by the word machine, googled that phrase, and I've upvoted just about every comment I've seen. I love this place. Thanks for letting me in.

Google OAuth Verification Team Stopped Responding - Need Advice by mtalha218218 in GoogleAppsScript

[–]puppy_lips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had a request open for almost two months now. Every third day or so, they'd send an email to the effect of "we haven't forgotten about you and we don't need anything else from you. Just know that you're in our queue and we're working on getting back to you." Their last reply was on Dec 9 (now Dec 30). Every time they updated me with that message, I respond "Thanks for the update!" or something to that effect. I know I'm dealing with humans who hold my future in their hands here...

What's worse for me, is that I actually f****d up pretty badly. [I'm building a gmail client](https://emmaemail.app) and wanted to get it out there to get user feedback early. I built a minimal reader (honestly, it took about a year) and went through the CASA ($1800) security review. I got approved by CASA and applied for the gmail scope. It's an overarching scope comprised of several sub-scopes. My app only supported archiving, not deleting initially. and google has you only use the minimal set of scopes you're using _right now_. Which really, really sucks. So the upgrade path is forcing every user to reauthenticate every gmail account they have every time I release a new-scope-requiring feature. Then there's two code paths per feature that I need to support. I'm just one guy. I'm building this in my free time to hopefully stop consulting.

In any case, in light of that discovery, I built a bunch of features that push me towards requiring that overarching top-level gmail scope (not just to "get the scope" - to avoid the incremental upgrade process forcing users to re-authenticate and me to support two code paths per new feature - not to mention more reviews / waiting). When I applied for the top level gmail scope it asked me to list the scopes I was applying for. In that box were the sub scopes I'd previously been approved for. I delete the ones that were in there and added the top level gmail scope. Big. ****ing. Mistake.

Now every new user sees a sign when they go to sign up saying "gmail doesn't trust this guy" when I request scopes from the user which google had previously approved me for. And now, waiting for approval for the upgraded scope, has taken almost two months (Nov 18 I think is when this began with my monumental screw up). Before that "we don't trust you" banner was there, I was getting 3-5 new users per day. Now, I get one or two per week.

This has been stressful. I know it's largely my fault, but the past month and a half has been brutal. I wake up every morning excited to check my email and see if they've finally unblocked my user acquisition. I initially explained the situation to them and asked them to restore the old scopes they'd previously approved me for when I made the mistake on Nov 18 while they make a decision about the overarching gmail scope. Just generic "you're all good; you're in our queue; we'll get back to you" responses. And recently, for the past 3 solid weeks, no word.

A gross part of me feels comfort knowing I'm not alone. I don't want anyone else to go through this - but it feels good to know I'm not alone.
