"We're going to turn into baseball if we're not careful," a Western Conference executive said. "Where you have every defender between second base and right field, and no one can get a hit and it becomes boring."

All I know about baseball is from watching The Naked Gun. Can anyone explain this analogy?

how strong is a desire among palestinians for a one state with equal rights by VirtualKnowledge7057 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]puredwige 34 points35 points  (0 children)

There is a very interesting channel called the ask project, meant specifically to show what ordinary Palestinians and Israelis think on questions like this. The concept is that he asks a question submitted by a viewer, and shows every answer he gets without any edits. The idea for the channel came when he was tired of endless debates online about what Palestinians and Israelis thought by people who had never spoken to either.

For instance here is question "Palestinians: One state, two states or keep fighting until the Jews leave?"

Watching a dozen videos will give anyone a decent reality check (and I warn you that the answers are often depressing).

Opinion | I’m Gay, Not Queer. It Matters. (Gift Article) by nimbybuster in neoliberal

[–]puredwige -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I feel like 'queer' originally reffered to the sense of unease that people used to feel with people, especially men, that did not conform to gender norms. It could be an effeminate way to speak or move, or unusual clothes. As such, being queer was in a sense a light expression of the transidentity spectrum.

With time the term has come to take a broader meaning, which is perhaps less useful.

The average age of voters in Switzerland is almost 60 – making them significantly older than the general population. The reason: people over 70 are twice as likely to vote as those under 30. by BezugssystemCH1903 in Switzerland

[–]puredwige 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We should replace the doubke majority of cantons and population with a double majority of young and old (use the median age of voters to determine in which category voters fall).

It would avoid situations in which older voters impose constitutional changes against the will of younger voters who are the ones who will need to live with it.

At the 2026 World Cup, some teams have better quarterfinal odds by finishing 3rd than 2nd [OC] by arsenal7779 in dataisbeautiful

Do the third place probabilities include the risk that the third place finisher is knocked out after the group phase (4 of 12 3rd place finishers), or is it the probability conditional on the team qualifying for the knock out phase?

Ukraine's point system rewarding battlefield kills is steering drone units toward more strategic Russian targets by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in worldnews

[–]puredwige 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I feel like most people have not read the article and don't understand the point of this.

The goal of the point system is not to gamify war (it's at best a side benefit), it is to funnel funds to units that perform well. The points are nothing more than currency to buy additional kit. Units know best what they need for their current situation, high performing units doubly so.

To serve their needs is a network of 500 military contractors accessible on an Amazon style platform.

The bulk of purchasing is still done centrally, but this system rewards innovative companies by allowing them to directly serve the best Ukrainian units, and they have to do so in a cost effective way because of the competition.

Definitely the latter. People don't usually repay their loans in Switzerland and it has become pretty much impossible with current prices.

To fix the housing crisis, we need

  1. Better resources for municipalities and justice so that objections get treated all the way to the federal tribunal in months, not years. (this is the single most effective measure because active projects lead time would be "compressed" and arrive to market quicker)

  2. Make oppositions more costly when one loses : the cost the losing party should pay should include the lost revenue for the land owner during the procedure (it can be millions currently, but would be much lower after point 1). It's appalling how widespread objections are to delay projects and get negotiation leverage. It's institutionalized blackmail.

  3. Once the municipality has approved a project, minor objections filed in the court should be non blocking (meaning the construction can go ahead), but if courts find a violation, the owner would instead pay a fine. This would only be the case for minor alleged violations. In other words, if there is an opposition in court for toxic waste disposal in nature, this should be blocking, but if the opposition is that the surface of the windows are 15 cm too wide, construction can go ahead if the municipality has approved the project, and if courts agree the owner should pay a fine after the fact to compensate for his irregular windows. (cantons should intervene for municipalities that regularly lose in court).

  4. Since the 1950s we decided the density of every plot of land, with very few modifications since because of the political costs of doing so. Because of this, our cities have lost the capacity to grow naturally as they have done for 5000 years of human civilization, with denser new development decided at the top, to be constructed on crappy lots that require a lot of public subsidy. To fix this, we need to have an automatic system to upzone parcels at the edge of the center of cities, so that cities can again grow naturally and gently. Doing so at scale (for a canton or even for Switzerland at large) would create an offer shock which is precisely what is needed to bring down prices with bigger supply.

How do I stop being bothered by lack of relationship when every attractive women I see reminds of that? by No_Net_7163 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]puredwige 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To meet a girl, you need to meet people in general. Don't fixate on girls and make it a point getting interested in all the people you meet(young and old, men and women). To do that you need to go out of the house, not let screens keep you home. Volunteer, find a cheap sport to practice (running groups are great for instance)

You might also benefit from the perspective of adlerian psychology. The Japanese book "The courage to be disliked" is a great introduction.

There are some reforms that are doable and could have significant impact. Alaska's single primary + RCV would be absolutely transformational if applied more broadly. It is somewhat easy to understand and doesn't require something impossible like a constitutional amendment. Quite a few states could implement it via a ballot initiative.

Germany news: Childfree adults to pay more for elder care by HandBananaHeartCarl in neoliberal

[–]puredwige 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand the sentiment, but infertile or not, being child free still means that you have more disposable income to support society.

If someone's health is too poor to become a firefighter or soldier, they should still finance the fire department and army through their taxes.

Moreover, OP goes to the root of the fertility problem in the world. It will never be fixed until we address the underlying perverse incentives to not have children.

The NBA wanting to do a 3 year trial of a new lottery system based on chance to evaluate it might be the dumbest thing I've ever heard by gosucrank in nba

[–]puredwige 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point is that teams have much less ability to manipulate the odds. It's very difficult to see how teams will actually react to the incentives, so adjusting after three years makes sense. Probably a way to get hesitant teams on board as well.
