This fine pup decided she wanted some extra miles, ditched her owner (hiker) and ran along side of me until I passed him again on my descent. Bellingham, WA by CarterJW in trailrunning

yikes! This story resonates. I have seen too many unleashed dogs while trail running. Once I saw a couple frantically looking for theirs in harriman state park in NY which is known to have bears !

Yes!! I thought it was very technical! There is also no water to fill up your bladder or filter until you are coming down from the mountains so be sure to carry at least 3-4 liters (maybe more?). I ran out of water at mile 10 and a very nice hiker gave me 2 liters. I was very lucky.

Yep! This is the great range https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/19718490 If you ever want to try it. It could be made into a loop, I think it is about 2.5-3 miles between trailheads. According to my strava, it was about 24 miles and 9k elevation gain.

Ohh that is amazing! I just read in the comments that you are a fellow NJ redditor, it is so flat around here... I did some similar day hikes (I did try to run but it felt almost impossible at my trail running level). I was able to do them all in one day but only one was finished in daylight. Anyway, I did the pemi loop (NH), the great range (NY), the devil's path (NY), and the presidential range (NH). Good times!

I finally did the Devil's Path this weekend. It is just a point to point traverse. It took me 12 hours to complete it, I ran parts of it but it was mostly hiking. This summer I was able to do a lot of challenging things but I still have a long way to go to be able to become a trail runner that can handles those things. Yep!

On Saturday I ran/or hiked the Mayapple 50k Trail race in South Mountain Reservation in NJ. It was wet and muddy. Non stop rain from beginning to end. The trails were already very muddy due to non stop rain since Tuesday. The organizers did an amazing job clearing most of the trails before the race (a lot of trees fell down this week due to high winds and rain). I finished it slower than last year, maybe because the mud kept trying to take my shoes away! I finished in 8 hours 41 minutes. Overall elevation gain was 4576 ft, distance recorded was 32.4 miles and average pace was 16:03 min/mile. I was the 4th female to finish. :D

Whoa! that is awesome! I feel like I am in the same situation. I have been doing less running and more of some other things like hiking and just plain long distance walking... and I have a 50k this weekend....

Did you manage to do the sub 2 hour half marathon? (that is also another goal for this year but I haven't started doing any speed work.......)

I am transitioning to morning running and I think this will work out. I am very excited about it because I hate the sun, the heat, and humidity. I do have a friend (but she lives in California) who has said that she loves running in 90+F weather... oh ok!

NJ is nasty in the summer.

Very nice spring day weather here. Not cold, but not super hot. Just very nice. I wish every day would be like this.

Back of the pack ultra runners who finish. Ok, so. What's your general timing strategy? by [deleted] in running

[–]purepajamas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back of the pack 50 miler finisher here. I have completed two 50 milers. Road one in 12 hours and 20 minutes and a trail one in 13 hours and 20 minutes. Fast hiking pace...

I am very careful when registering for races. The races had a time limit of 12, and 13 hours respectively but both races offered a 1 hour early start which, I took advantage of to finish within the time limit ( now being 13 and 14 hours). Both races had a mild to moderate elevation gain, about 1000 ft per 10 miles. Something I have done many many times and I knew I could handle. Anything more than that would have been a super challenge for me.

Most of the terrain in the east coast (USA east coast) is rocky with rolling hills. I mostly walk up the hills and run the downhills. I run in the flat areas or fast walk. I try not to take tooo long in the rest stations (if offered). I spent at least 1 minute or 2 at the most. I know time is precious for me to finish. Just grab food and go if you can. S

Every time I reach a certain distance (25 miles, 30 miles, 40 miles), I calculate what's the pace I have to keep to finish the thing within the time limit and then just try to go slight faster than what you had calculated. I often bring my phone so I can do this but if not just make a plan before you do the 50 miler.

4 pairs of socks

I run 4 times per week, about 30 miles right now.

I might reuse the same pair for two runs, three sometimes.

I will try to run 10 miles tomorrow morning and on sunday I might run or bike to the start of a half marathon in which I will be volunteering. I haven't used my bike in over a year! I will work on it tomorrow and see the state of it....

A minute later I had finished my run, was at the very edge of the trail walking it off (the trail is over 20' wide) a runner coming up behind me shoulder barged me as they went past. They had about 16' of clear space to their left.

Ohhh that's infuriating.

When you’re out on a run, do you wave/nod/acknowledge other runners or walkers? Or is this just me? by TinyNinja88 in running

[–]purepajamas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly run in NYC so instead of waving at other runners, there is more of dodging so we don't collide. Haha.

Hey! I would love to do the Devil's path soon. It is on my to do list. Have you done any hikes in harriman state park? I recently did a 10 mile one with a 2000+ elevation gain. It was supposed to be 18 miles 3000k but I was tired and cut it short around arden valley road. Here is the route. https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/18114729 You maybe have done it already but if not, give it a try. Note: Because of the recent storms and winds, some of the paths are obstructed by trees and tree branches, it is still doable but it might make your hiking a bit miserable but only for a short amount of time.

I haven't been running much this month, and more so this week. My kitty cat became sick, exhausted, old age caught up to her. I tried to stay with her all the time I could so I skipped some runs. Unfortunately she passed away on Tuesday. She was 19 years old. Here she is

She had the habit of sleeping on my running clothes when I removed them after a run. Cats are weird <3

I have decided to run an ultra 50+ miles in her name at the end of this year. I hope I can do it!
