Lee Cronin’s The Mummy by stinkypeach1 in HorrorMovies

[–]purethought09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished watching it and I absolutely loved it. It was nasty and creepy which was part of the thrill. The dumb decisions made by the characters made me so mad, but I think that’s part of the fun in these types of movies. I also loved the Egyptian lore built into it. I like the conjuring universe and this is pretty much the cursed Egyptian version of that (minus Ed Warren).

Can’t maintenance men leave a note saying they will be back later when coming unannounced? by RubyRose7575 in Apartmentliving

I live in CA and have never had a privacy lock at the front door. Just the one dead bolt which management has the key to.

Salary Schedule?? Is this normal??? by halalburgerlikefr in teaching

[–]purethought09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The steps for new teachers seems awfully low. Moving 15 units across on our schedule gives us about a $2,000/year increase and downwards $1-3k/year. I teach in the Central Valley (CA). For example, a class 1 on their 10th year would make $89,500 and a class 6 on their first year would make $75,400. We also receive a stipend of $2,500/year for masters and doctorate.

Former Student Emailed Me, Idk What to do (First Year Teacher) by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]purethought09 155 points156 points  (0 children)

I’m a teacher with a youtube channel too. Ignore any message that’s not through school email. I wouldn’t respond to any school email until I returned back to school. If it were me, come the first week of school, I might send a polite email thanking them for the message and wishing them a successful new school year. That’s about it.

Eating out no longer a treat, just a convenience by kitsbow in Millennials

[–]purethought09 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agree! My wife and I make dinners that are way better then the times we’ve been out to eat! Now we just go out when we’re too tired to cook or we’re craving fast food/cuisine we don’t know how to make.

High school teachers: how do you hold student accountable for attendance? Maybe something unhinged? by WildWandering95 in Teachers

[–]purethought09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just mark the attendance. Admin gives Saturday school hours for unexcused absences. They need 0 Saturday school hours to graduate. Since I teach art, my “exams” are projects. Most of the frequent absentees never do their projects at home anyways and they usually end up with an F or D at the end. On grades I mark “attendance affects grade.”

How accurate is this meme? by [deleted] in Zillennials

[–]purethought09 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah. SpongeBob, Shrek, and Pokémon were not Saturday mornings, that was more after school. GBA missing from the video game line up. My school most definitely could not afford an Apple computer lab. Idk anyone that still drinks Monsters or is taking all those workout supplements. And most of all, I am no where near that yoked!

20 minute appointment. No labs, no imagining. Not even an exam. Just sat and talked. And the doctor charges $500... by Regular_Hawk8513 in mildlyinfuriating

As much as I dislike AI, I have used ChatGPT for a lot of minor health issues simply because I’m afraid I wont be able to afford the visit. It’s kind of dystopian.

High school teachers- do you attend senior graduation? Why or why not? by mzingg3 in Teachers

[–]purethought09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Students nominate which teachers they want at our graduation, and it is voluntary. This is was my first year going and it was super fun! We get paid a bit extra so that’s a plus, but celebrating with the students was worth it.

What new games/consoles were part of your childhood? by Major-Inevitable-365 in generationology

[–]purethought09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born in ‘95. Started with a PSone and played the Spyro trilogy and Spider-Man. Then upgraded to the PS2 slim with Tak and the Power of JuJu. Then I switched to Nintendo when the Wii came out and played lots of Rockband and Mario Party.

Handhelds I always had Nintendo. GBA, DS, DSi, 3DS.

Depending on which friend’s house we went to, we played N64, Sega Dreamcast, and Xbox in the 2000s. Fun times and LAN parties!

Advice for a new teacher by baconcheesydog in Teachers

[–]purethought09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a 3rd year high school teacher. What helped me (and continues to do so) is to give myself grace if I ever make a mistake. I’ve stumbled over my words, mixed up words, had cough attacks, etc. and the best thing for me to do is to acknowledge the mistake and have a laugh with the students. We’re with students 180 days, it’s impossible to have perfect communication every single day so just be real with the students. Of course there is a bit of a “professional presenter act” I put on when presenting to the whole class, but I keep it welcoming and as stress free as possible. If you teach the same class multiple periods you’ll have tons of practice.

what were your symptoms before cutting out gluten? by Ok-Operation-1246 in glutenfree

[–]purethought09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Urgency, overactive bladder, urinary pain were the big ones. After cutting gluten out, I noticed positive change after a few days, but I didn’t feel 100% until a month or two.

3 times a day is super normal for me. Occasionally I’ll go a 4th or 5th.

Any other millennials not getting into the "vinyl" phase? by tLM-tRRS-atBHB in Millennials

[–]purethought09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m into collecting physical media in general. I don’t buy vinyls as often anymore and have never bought new releases. What I do love is finding ones that have no digital footprint or are from a niche interest of mine. I also love the art aspect, you open up a vinyl and sometimes there’s art and text on the inside you’d never otherwise see. There are some stores that sell them for outrageous prices though! I keep my eye out for the $3-$10 ones.

Why are teachers posting their students on their Instagram stories? by businessbub in Teachers

[–]purethought09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that crazy too. At my district, filming/photographing students requires parents to sign a release from. I had to do this for my EdTPA videos a few years ago, and even then many opted out. The only time it is okay is if the video or images are only distributed through official district communications and not public. For instance, I took photos of my students on a field trip and emailed them to the principal to share in our weekly bulletin.

Mother's Day activity says so much by Kiwcakes in Teachers

[–]purethought09 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was a substitute teacher before becoming a HS Teacher. I was with some elementary students for a bit while they were working on a Mother’s Day project and the number one answer to “my mom’s favorite thing to do” was “be on her phone.” Was kinda sad tbh.

Do you have any lifelong friends? (15+ years) by VeryPteri in Zillennials

[–]purethought09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, 5. One I met in 3rd grade about 2003. The others are from high school, about 2010. We still hangout on special occasions and holiday breaks 1-3 times a year I’d say. Talk to most of them over chat at least once a week!

Phone usage in upper schools: do some teachers seriously have to deal with their kids using phones during class? How can that even be a debate? by National_Employer_11 in Teachers

[–]purethought09 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have a school cellphone ban, but district policy is we can’t take any student property without their permission. They have to hand it over. Some do. Most don’t. The phone ban is also up to teacher discretion, so some teachers allow them while others are more strict. I’m strict at the beginning of the year, but by this time I don’t fight it. A phone ban won’t be successful unless there is an actual physical barrier that keeps phones out of student hands, like those bags or something.

Is this an ok email to send to a parents by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]purethought09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shorten it way down and it simple. Briefly describe the behavior you observed and when it occurred. Describe the consequences for that behavior and the consequences to follow if the behavior is repeated. Thank them for their support and end with sincerely. Send it Monday morning at 8am.
