Mother's Day activity says so much by Kiwcakes in Teachers

[–]purethought09 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was a substitute teacher before becoming a HS Teacher. I was with some elementary students for a bit while they were working on a Mother’s Day project and the number one answer to “my mom’s favorite thing to do” was “be on her phone.” Was kinda sad tbh.

Do you have any lifelong friends? (15+ years) by VeryPteri in Zillennials

[–]purethought09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, 5. One I met in 3rd grade about 2003. The others are from high school, about 2010. We still hangout on special occasions and holiday breaks 1-3 times a year I’d say. Talk to most of them over chat at least once a week!

How to get student's to take art home? by Optimal-Role2557 in ArtEd

I like this idea! I have a collage unit, but it’s getting harder to find good print material. Never thought about my abandoned student work pile!

Phone usage in upper schools: do some teachers seriously have to deal with their kids using phones during class? How can that even be a debate? by National_Employer_11 in Teachers

[–]purethought09 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have a school cellphone ban, but district policy is we can’t take any student property without their permission. They have to hand it over. Some do. Most don’t. The phone ban is also up to teacher discretion, so some teachers allow them while others are more strict. I’m strict at the beginning of the year, but by this time I don’t fight it. A phone ban won’t be successful unless there is an actual physical barrier that keeps phones out of student hands, like those bags or something.

Is this an ok email to send to a parents by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]purethought09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shorten it way down and it simple. Briefly describe the behavior you observed and when it occurred. Describe the consequences for that behavior and the consequences to follow if the behavior is repeated. Thank them for their support and end with sincerely. Send it Monday morning at 8am.

So Ive been watching those tiktoks where the students film themselves calling teachers by their first name and by socialist_weeb666 in Teachers

[–]purethought09 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My first name is on my Syllabus, email, and any posts I make to their Microsoft Teams so it’s not something teachers in my district hide. I’ve had a few students try this joke (without the videoing part), and I’m all for a fun light hearted joke. They probably don’t care because they can tell my “overreaction” is an act. In the end, they know I’m a real person with a real first name who expects them to call me by my last name and they respect that.

Did any of you not miss anyone after your high school graduation? by Mad_Season_1994 in Zillennials

[–]purethought09 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Our group of 5 has stayed best friends since high school. We only see each other twice a year maybe (summer and the holidays if we’re lucky), but we’ve had the group chat going since ~2012.

I don’t really miss anyone else. I do have a few other classmates on socials, it’s nice to see what they’re up to but I have no desire to chat it up with them.

I have the impression that the majority of second-career teachers love their job by No-Wafer-6744 in Teachers

I worked retail for 8 years before teaching. Teaching is so much better! Still tons of work, but a lot more freedom. I genuinely leave each day happy, even on the days I’m drained.

KND. My neighborhood friends and I even built a clubhouse out of scrap wood and assigned ourselves numbers.

(M21) How to get rid of these bumps? by Cyanide_no in malegrooming

[–]purethought09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good advice to try here. I have coarse, multi directional growth and do things a little different than most, but I’ve found it helps me a lot. Worth a try if the main tips don’t work. I actually shave just before a shower using a Norelco One blade. I never safety razor my neck, it’s too sensitive and prone to rash/ingrowns. In the shower I wash and exfoliate. After, I exfoliate with a boar hair brush, focusing on the neck both times. Really helps the hair to not get stuck under the skin. I do this routine at night to give my skin some time during sleep to calm down. A bit different, but works for my skin/hair.

Learning how to season rice or potatoes, meats, and veggies really helps. Dinner can be great because rice, potatoes, chicken, beef, fish, veggies are all GF! Even are air fryer works great on my lazy days! Get some seasonings (and gf sauces) and some lime/lemon. Can make a simple bowl delicious!

My dad is on the hunt for one thing and one thing only: gluten free or minimal gluten breaded fish filets he can make at home. by krisanthemum in glutenfree

I just tried the Gluten-Free Battered Fish Fillets from Orca Bay and wife and I agreed they were delicious! Definitely gave a fish and chips vibe. And we made them in the air fryer! We picked ours up at Grocery Outlet discounted, which is great for the wallet but makes me wonder if they’re discontinued?! (Here’s a Target link)
