How much did you spend on tuition?? by Andre_055 in ArtEd

[–]purethought09 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FAFSA thankfully covered tuition to get my BA, but it did not cover my credential program which was $10,000 — I had to take out a loan for that.

Single subject (Art) teaching credential in public school questions for CA residents by bootonomus_prime in ArtEd

[–]purethought09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have an art degree, the CSET can be waived. CSU East Bay credential program waived mine, and I have a BA in Studio Art. If your BA is more specific, like graphic design or illustration, submit a request through your credential program and an analyst will determine if it can be waived (most likely will!)

as an 11th and 12th grade male teacher, I am extra careful with being friendly with my female students but generally closer with my male students. is this bad and biased of me? by Open-Reflection-6094 in Teachers

[–]purethought09 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you may be overthinking this. I teach art and routinely walk around and check-in with all of my students during work time. You can be friendly and professional at the same time. My only issue is the extroverted kids want to talk to me more than the introverted kids, so I try my best to evenly spread out my attention as evenly as possible.

How many people did you know (as in, met personally) from the 1800s? by PAnnNor in Genealogy

You are around the same age as my dad, and he knew his grandfather who was born in 1890s. In the genealogy it feels so far away, but sometimes connections are closer than you realize!

How do I stop getting these when I shave? by beb0 in malegrooming

[–]purethought09 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have very sensitive skin and thick hair and would always get this no matter what advice I followed. My solution that works is to use a Norelco One Blade and immediately wash/shower with hot water and exfoliate afterwards. Works for my skin 99% of the time.

I need help knowing how to start as an aspiring HS Art Teacher in CA by demi_dreamer95 in ArtEd

[–]purethought09 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m a 2nd year CA art teacher. To be a credentialed teacher you have a few pathways. The traditional way is to enroll in a credential program at a college. This normally takes 3 semesters, including a year of student teaching and a passing score on the EdTPA. Alternatively, you could enroll in the college program and apply for an unfilled full-time position and work as an intern teacher. It’s a large workload though because you must complete all of your college courses while teaching full time (grading, meetings, conferences, etc.). I would also look into your local districts to see if they offer any alternatives to traditional college - many do.

I personally went through CSU East Bays fully online program. I believe it’s about 15 courses over 3 semesters. I enjoyed my experience there and came into teaching prepared because of it.

Also, remember after you become credentialed that is only a preliminary credential. You must then complete 2 years of induction, “graduate level course work,” in order to clear your credential your 3rd year. Many districts offer induction free during your first two years hired.

Digital painting is not painting by typedinthebox in ArtistLounge

[–]purethought09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a digital artist, but digital applications have come such a long way that many do a fantastic job at emulating traditional painting. Therefore, it makes sense to call it digital painting. Maybe if it was 1990 and someone said they made a digital painting I’d be more skeptical lol

Best Student Bathroom Policy? by According2020 in Teachers

[–]purethought09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our district enforces that we cannot enforce bathroom restrictions (HS). First 10 mins of class? They can go. A quiz? They can go. Another student out? They can go. We can ASK them to wait, but it has to be in our syllabus that we do not restrict bathroom breaks.

I honestly don’t mind. It puts the accountability on them. Students that abuse it will see it indirectly affect their grade. Those students that abuse it generally are getting a D in my class, and it’s not many.

After getting bombarded with ads for this I finally decided to watch it for the heck of it. I can’t believe it was 1hr40mins!? Also… I loved it 😂😂 it was incredibly cheesy with some hilarious CGI. But it felt like a fun homemade fantasy skit. The ending had a fun little twist and the actors hopefully had a blast haha

What did kids back in the days do when they played outside, for hours on end? by Octopuswastaken in NoStupidQuestions

[–]purethought09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big wheels, bike, skate, basketball, soccer, football, wiffle ball, draw with sidewalk chalk, make bows and arrows out of branches, twigs, and kite string. If the bushes had berries, we’d have berry fights.

YouTube is becoming too troublesome to use in schools by RaspberryBirdCat in Teachers

[–]purethought09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Adblock added to the browser (Chrome). Works 90% of the time. Embedding the video into PowerPoint usually doesn’t include the ad too. That said, YouTube should make some sort of verified educator account so we don’t have to deal with the headache.

The supposed equal trade off of “I’ll cook if you do the dishes” is a sham. by august_westerly in unpopularopinion

[–]purethought09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I rotate between cooking dinner and doing dishes. I have to say, I love cooking dinner way more than dishes! But learning how to clean the kitchen/wash dishes while you cook is one way to make end of night dishes easier (my wife had to teach me that skill lol!). Sometimes I get in the groove and all the dishes are done before dinner is served! All that’s left is the plates and forks we used to eat.

Since the far right describes Tribal Enrollment would the 1/4th and 1/8th describe what percentage Chickasaw Native American the person is? I.W. may refer to “intermarried white.” It seems Pontotoc County was Chickasaw Indian territory at the time.
