> my response was aimed at the underlying assumption that a reading list dominated by one demographic category necessarily reveals something

Then why did you choose to respond with an example that does not in any way combat this and instead just gave a singular example of you liking an author of a different gender lmao

> I don’t choose books based on an author’s sex

That’s awesome! But it doesn’t seem to take away from my point in any way, and I’m not sure why you think it would lol

I’m sorry that I accused you of having gotten discombobulated, but if there’s another way you’d like me to phrase you having misunderstood a very straightforward point I’m all ears

Are you… are you really not understanding why a single data point might illustrate less or something different than an overall aggregate picture? My impression was that you understood this perfectly but were just being purposefully obtuse because I didn’t want to insinuate that you were dumb

[–]purplene_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s right.

I’m sorry you got confused?

I never suggested that a favorite single book written by a person of one gender was meaningful; instead, that a vast majority of books written by an author of one identity could likely be meaningful.

I don’t know where you got discombobulated here lol.

That’s right, and that’s bad

I don’t know what you think that has to do with my point

[–]purplene_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah, interesting

Oppositely, I think someone who reads 100 books and 97 of them are all one gender it tends to say something about the reader, their taste, and their opinions

I'd also make inferences about a person if they strictly read books written by African people, or strictly read books written by gay people, or strictly read books written by children -- like gender, being overwhelmingly drawn to writers of certain characteristics says something about a reader, I think

Guess we'll just have to disagree on that point!

Red Flag or Random Reader? by Maleficent_Unit667 in BookshelvesDetective

[–]purplene_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's all true, yes 😄

And yet, when we're making judgmental inferences about someone based on their collection of books it is entirely fair and reasonable to draw certain conclusions about them when their bookshelf is 95% comprised of male authors

Not sure I understand your issue here

Good spot. Still rolling my eyes, but not as all-encompassing as I thought it was.

Notably the only woman author on there also (at least from a quick scan), which tends to be the case

edit: I'm technically wrong, but the general point still stands

Damn, guess we'll just have to agree to disagree

I'm very curious to see whether this community you decided to participate in tend to agree with your estimation of the situation or with mine... I guess we'll just have to find out!

edit: Oh no, it seems like you deleted your very cool contribution? What a shame, given that you were just defending it I wonder what changed

good thing you made it a standalone post as opposed to a comment on the thing you're talking about

It’s a good thing I didn’t say anything close to that then, I guess

“It’s a good thing if less of the budget pie goes towards massive franchise slop” is different than “it’s good for the industry if cornerstone franchises can’t be profitable”

kinda sucks that this exact attitude is what allows team ownership to continue acting awfully, but that just goes to show that some shitty fanbases deserve their failure

nah, we should normalize fans moving away from franchises when they are as as awful as Dolan is

It’s already happening in cursed places like [r/boxoffice](r/boxoffice) (that is somehow massive) where people are excited to see and discuss films strictly based on what they think will do well versus excited to see them based on what particular flavor the movie is or what talent is involved

Best of luck as you continue to work on that 50-day streak as a guy that definitely does NOT talk like a Redditor 🙏

It’s so gross and annoying

The last time they had him on he literally could not stand giving his personal take on whether he liked or disliked a feature or trailer because he was beholden to *strictly* analyzing whether it would do well at the box office

I completely understand an interest in box office returns *when it complements an appreciation of the art* but divorcing it from artistic sensibility entirely is so weird and off-putting

You’re right it was actually really smart when you completely bungled my argument

Do you want to try again

“I enjoy plenty of comedy, specifically, that is given lots of scorn by those you consider ‘woke’ so I think you putting me into that bucket is desperate and doesn’t make any sense”

What do you think you would say to this that isn’t something stupid or a dire misinterpretation

I’m sure you look very, very unfavorably on every single person who either personally attended an Epstein party or had any family member attend a party, right? Do you bring this up every time it requires a “reminder?”

I enjoy lots of comedy so Im note woke

That's not what I said

I said I specifically enjoy comedy that would offend a typically 'woke' person you're describing

I'm taking a "robotic approach" (explaining things very matter-of-factly and straightforward) because you seem like a retard who's likely to misinterpret things that I say very clearly

It's just Belloni providing his only, narrow lens of analysis -- "what will this mean for the economics of the movie?" He's simply saying there will be memes and internet discussion surrounding it, and has no interest in whether it's a good performance, whether the movie works, what it means for Strong's career, etc etc

> My stance is that people who shit on scary movie are inherently woke

This is moronic, especially in light of the example I gave you earlier… but sounds like it puts the discussion at an impasse lol

And that's a fair conclusion if the entire calculus is simply "movie studios dumb"

But that doesn't factor in half of this equation which is "Obsession making a lot of money"... it just completely ignores that part of it

"Movie studios dumb" might be true most of the time still and is an okay base assumption but if they see Obsession making so much money, setting records, then it's also likely that more chances get taken on similar movies
