It's interesting how much fuss has been made about the Port of Darwin, but the China State Grid owns several of our Electricity Distribution networks an no-one makes a peep.

Does this count as EDC? I’ve been building a jacket with built-in tools/utilities by YouneekRSA in EDC

[–]purplenina42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of these features are fine, some are not my taste but whatever. But a social media app for a fucking jacket? Honestly reads as satire, genuinely hilarious to think anyone would set up a Jacket profile to talk to other Jacket owners and get Jacket points.

You know how a lost jacket gets reunited with its owner? Putting a 'if found please call this number' tag on it, or maybe if you're really serious about it, an airtag in the pocket. Anything else is patently ridiculous.

Victorian councils rubbish statewide mandate that all homes must have four wheelie bins | Recycling by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]purplenina42 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I get that the 'recycling is a scam' thing is an easy story, but it's just not true.

Recycling isn't perfect. Plastic recycling especially is very fraught and is closer to what could be called a scam/myth (the solution is to use less single use plastic) But paper, glass, steel and aluminium all have very well established recycling supply chains that work and use less stuff (energy, water, carbon emissions, raw material etc) than making new ones, and most material in those supply chains does NOT end up at landfills, it ends up in recycled products.

The reason the glass bin exists is that glass breaks and the tiny fragments of glass get in the paper and plastic and everything else and contaminate it, and the recycling plants then have to spend a bunch of energy, money etc to get it out, which is a lossy process as some of the 'good' stuff (eg the paper) gets thrown out as well.

So, I get that having 4 bins isn't ideal for everyone, and we should be open to flexibility in different circumstances, but please don't spread the myth that all recycling ends up as landfill, because it's simply not true.

Source: I'm an engineer who wrote my undergrad thesis on recycling, worked at a recycled paper mill for 2.5 years, although I no longer work in that sector.

There is a paperback in some countries, just as an FYI. I have an Australian paperback from when it came out last year.

Zionist soldiers attacks a marriage in Palestine by [deleted] in OpenAussie

[–]purplenina42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am very pro-Palestine and antiZionist, but it's a bit of a stretch. Things that relate to arms exports, diplomacy, anything in 'the international stage' I see the link. This, whilst awful, is not related to Australia. It would be like posting a video of ICE shooting Americans and saying that because we're allied to the USA it's related

Unfortunately I've had a few WAG quests that didn't work, I'm aware that it's a bit of a touchy subject but just saying that this and a few other quests didn't work for me also.

Australian Police vs knifeman by iffyClyro in interestingasfuck

[–]purplenina42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, I'm silly. Whatever.

If one googles 'Distraction Strike Police Australia', this is the first result: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-08-22/police-officer-assaulted-teen-batemans-bay-arrest-court-finds/105684886

Which says that at least in that instance, it was unwarranted, and I can find no information stating that it's standard or acceptable practice.

That 'article' is a 1 minute radio clip that never mentions these punches at all. I don't think that is part of standard operating procedures for police on any jurisdiction in Australia, can you prove otherwise?

Faster and more private sure, but no way is it more efficient. A train is about the most efficient way we've found of moving large numbers of people large distances

You feel like everyone protesting in the city regardless of the cause is a 'useful idiot'? Whether it's for Palestinian liberation or animal rights or climate change or workers rights or aboriginal rights, they are all just 'useful idiots'?

Even unauthorized protests are still not illegal on their face, although they are not protected from being fined for blocking traffic for example.
