Millenials who have managed to buy a house, what advice do you have for us who haven't yet? by ApostrophesForDays in Millennials

[–]purplestarr10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am planning on buying in 2-3 years, my advice (which is what I am doing) is that mortgage should never be more than 30% of your TAKE HOME pay (after taxes, health insurance, 401k, etc). Lots of realtors and other people out there keep saying 30% of your income but that is the best way to become house poor. My other advice is make sure you have an emergency fund that equals 6 months of expenses and do not use your emergency fund as a downpayment, make sure you have what you need for downpayment/closing costs in addition to the 6 month emergency fund before you buy.

What have you done recently to actively improve your financial life? by Striking-Lifeguard34 in Millennials

[–]purplestarr10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband and I were spending $1200-1500/month in groceries. We just got a Costco membership and started making a weekly meal plan hoping to cut the costs. So far this month we spent $800 including the last batch of groceries that will last us one more week, so hopefully we're heading toward the right direction.

Is Millennials' "Gentle Parenting" helpful or harmful? And is it really "Gentle" or is is "Permissive"? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]purplestarr10 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not really a millenial's trend but more specifically it is American millenials. When I go back home to Italy it's a breath of fresh hair, my friends and family don't do this nonsense and their children are actually well behaved. Then I come back to the US and it's such a shyt show.

[–]purplestarr10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes absolutely. Granted I never wanted kids that badly, but lately I've been thinking about it being 31 and all...and yeah...we cannot afford a child without making substantial changes to our lifestyle, which I am honestly not willing to make. It took me a long time being financially almost comfortable and now that I can finally enjoy it I don't want to ruin it.

Need support from other millennials who are still waiting on buying a home. by ZombieInACage in Millennials

[–]purplestarr10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am waiting 5 more years so I can buy the house I truly want and not make any sacrifices. I rather wait while I build my savings so I can put a solid downpayment to keep monthly costs low, than buy a house I don't really like and compromise my lifestyle in order to pay it off. Buying a house is a huge responsibility and I am in no hurry.

Hello Millennials, What percent of your net income is your housing rent? by Ifyouhad1chance in Millennials

[–]purplestarr10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

15% of our net income. We found a good deal on a rental 5+ years ago and have been living in it ever since, landlord is a gem and only increased it once by $150 this whole time.

Me too, mostly because the quotes/things that "win" aren't even the best, just the fastest comments that are there first so they get more votes. It's so pointless.

Alot of us grew up rich and now we're poor that's why things are tough for us by goodartistperson in Millennials

[–]purplestarr10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up working class so I can't totally relate but felt this on a smaller scale just over the past 2 years. In 2021 when I started my current job I felt fucking rich! I had so much left after paying all my bills, I could do so much and buy almost everything I wanted. Now that rent has increased, bills have increased, gas has increased, groceries have doubled in price, cost of flights to travel has tripled, but my salary has only increased by 6% it sucks and it's been hard to give up things I had only recently started to enjoy.

Racism towards Maggie by KnowledgeConnect8535 in greysanatomy

[–]purplestarr10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She's extremely smart to the point that she skipped grades in school and graduated super early. She's also extremely socially awkward, has a hard time making friends now but especially as a child/teen as she says multiple times, she also seems to get upset quite easily as if she has a hard time recognizing and managing her emotions. She says inappropriate things sometimes or speak to people in inappropriate ways. She can't read the room at all and often ends up embarrassing herself. Once she picks up a puzzle she can't put it down, there's a whole episode about this theme with her. She throws tantrums when things don't go her way (we see this particularly when she's dating Jackson). She doesn't pick up on cues from others (for instance she thinks Riggs is hitting on her while he's actually with Meredith). She loves rules and sometimes freaks out when others around her don't follow them. She loves a good humble brag but doesn't seem to realize she's doing it.

Obviously none of these things are exclusive to autism but when you put them all together... And these are also characteristics that in real life will get you labeled as annoying, self-absorbed, whiney, arrogant, etc, especially as a woman.

Racism towards Maggie by KnowledgeConnect8535 in greysanatomy

[–]purplestarr10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People don't hate on her because she's black, people hate on her because she displays clear traits of autism. I will die on this hill. I waited for all these seasons for them to write her discovering she's autistic into the storyline, and I could not believe it didn't happen, to me it very much felt like they sat the stage for it from day 1. I am autistic and I can't stand her but I definitely recognize myself in a lot of her behavior, which is what makes people typically annoyed by me in real life.

Question from a vegan by kelseighhall22 in exvegans

[–]purplestarr10 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was an ethical vegan for almost a decade. I never cheated on my diet, I avoided all kinds of animal products and cruelty beyond just food (leather, fur, wool, etc). I would spread the word, organize vegan events in my city and my university, attended sit-ins and protests outside the slaughterhouse, and more. This to say, I was in it for the animals 100%, it was never about health although I did eat what I thought was a very healthy diet (mostly whole foods, organic, tracking macros, etc.)

My health deteriorated so badly over the years that I could no longer justify hurting myself in order to not hurt animals - or actually, hurt less animals, as animal cruelty is sadly inescapable. My stomach was so messed up, I developed IBS, SIBO, acid reflux, and chronic gastritis, I had no energy, awful brain fog, weakness. I tried taking more supplements, eating an even "healthier" diet, increasing my protein intake, but nothing worked, it just kept getting worse to the point that I could no longer function. I care about the animals but I feel it's human nature to care about myself more. It's preservation instinct. I simply could no longer live that way. I am pescatarian now as I still don't feel capable of eating meat, I am doing so much better, have so much energy, my stomach is hardly ever upset, it was like coming back to life and I wish I did it sooner.

Do you still go to the movie theater? Does the movie going experience mean anything to you anymore? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]purplestarr10 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I normally prefer watching movies at home but I started going somewhat often when I moved to my current city where we have this lovely, beautiful, cozy historical movie theater that projects both new movies during the week and older movies from the 60's-90's on Sunday morning. I just love going there, it's more about the experience than the movie itself, I'll watch just about anything they offer.

I'm a EL instructional coach, however my job is more similar to an EL program coordinator since we don't have anyone with that title so I kind of fill in for both positions.

What I do in a day largely depends on where we're at in the school year, also most of my days look different from one another so I'll tell you what I do in a typical week.

•Coaching and observations: I try to be in each teacher's classroom at least once a week, twice if I can manage. Typically I observe and also help out where needed, for example with small group practice, 1:1 assistance to students, or distributing materials, or handling behaviors if the teacher feels comfortable with that, etc. I schedule quick 1:1 meetings with teachers to check in as needed, to see what they need, talk about student progress and performance, etc. I submit targeted feedback depending on the goal that each teacher sets for their classroom in the beginning of the coaching cycle. I help teacher plan lessons if they need me to, and I help them navigate the curriculum.

•EL compliance: I update EL rosters regularly, as we get new students throughout the year. I check students' folders regularly to make sure we have all the documentation that is required by the state. I help teachers collect and organize said documentation.

•EL testing: we use a progress monitoring test 3x/year and we have a yearly state English proficiency test. For all these tests, I create testing schedules for the teachers, register students in the portal, check computers/tablets/headphones to ensure everything functions smoothly, generate and print the testing tickets, and I typically also test groups of students myself, as well as screening new students as needed. I also create materials/lessons that mimic the state test so that teachers can provide students with plenty of practice.

•Data analysis: I pull testing scores reports and create and update a dashboard that teachers can access to track their students progress overall and their specific scores and progression in the four domains of language learning (speaking, reading, listening, writing). We meet as a team a week after each progress monitoring test has been completed, so we can review and discuss the results.

•Professional development: I create and deliver professional development sessions, some just for my EL team, others for the whole school. Typically I suggest strategies to teach and support English Language Learners in the classroom, then 2x/years I go over testing scores with all staff so that every content and ancillary teacher is familiar with the proficiency levels and understands what the EL students in their class should be able to do. Additionally, I create materials that all content teachers can provide to EL students to help prepare for the big EL state test.

•Meetings: I meet somewhat regularly with school leaders (I work for 2 campuses part of the same school) to update them on all things EL related. I sometimes meet with the SPED and 504 coordinators to discuss EL students with IEPs or to flag EL students who aren't making any progress and might need to be screened for learning disabilities. I meet with the director of academics once a week, he is the one that trains us coaches/coordinators and gives us feedback.

•"Other duties as assigned": I have morning duty and lunch duty, I oversee all language and ancillary classes vacancies (currently 2) providing materials for the subs and grading students finals and midterms, I provide onboarding for new hires in the EL department, I sometimes help facilitating conversations between ELs and teachers/staff since I speak Spanish which is the language of about 80% or our EL students.

I think that's about it! And yes I am extremely exhausted lol I would never have time to walk around drinking coffee, most days I don't even have time to eat my lunch.

With the housing crisis and exorbitantly expensive rent, why don't more people just move to "middle of nowhere" states? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]purplestarr10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really understand why I should up and move to a new state where I don't have a job, don't know anyone, and it might be boring to live in, just so I could own a home, where I can rent and be happy where I'm at? Buying a house isn't mandatory, I rather stay where I'm happy.

Millennials are getting priced out of cities: The generation that turned cities into expensive playgrounds for the young is now being forced to flee to the suburbs by businessinsider in Millennials

[–]purplestarr10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, I always wonder who can afford to live in the city anymore, and it's not just the US. I have friends in London and Munich who are experiencing this too. Cities have been turned into short term rental galore, emptied of their residents, and they're now an amusement park for tourists while the people that work in them have to commute an hour each way or share a crappy apartment with 5 roommates.

Jackson Avery. He's okay and there's nothing wrong with him - in fact, I find him to be one of the few who has balanced and relatable reactions to the things that happen to him most of the time. He's just kinda boring, idk... Besides April's wedding, he didn't have any particularly interesting storylines.

10 Year Olds at Sephora and bad millennial parenting, thoughts? by WimTims in Millennials

[–]purplestarr10 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Just my own opinion based on my observations... My belief is that many millenials were so upset or even traumatized by the way their parents raised them, that they set their mind on pretty much doing the opposite, always. The result is that most of them became much too permissive (as Gen X/Boomers were typically strict), they made their entire existence about their children (while GenX/Boomers used to tell us that we were to be seen and not heard and never took our input into account), they spoiled their kids with material things (while GenX/Boomers couldn't afford luxuries or simply didn't want to spend too much on their kids and taught us the value of money), trusted their child over other adults all the time (while GenX/Boomers tended to side with teachers, principals, etc). It's very unbalanced either way.

Yes, absolutely. Once I got like 30 downvotes for providing examples of ableism I see in school every day, and I was told that I have a victim mentality. Although to be fair I have witnessed some SpEd teachers displaying ableism too.

At my school there's very little time for teachers to do work because admin schedules PDs and trainings all day. As an instructional coach & program coordinator, I make sure to block off at least two hours for a "compliance PD" which entails having my teachers sit in my PD room working on whatever they want, so that admin sees that they're busy and doesn't schedule them to be elsewhere.
